National Diet and Nutrition Survey data reveal a decline in folate status in the United Kingdom population between 2008 and 2019.

BACKGROUND: Folate is essential for healthy growth and development. Fortification of foods with folic acid can improve folate status and reduce risk of neural tube defects (NTD). Following concern around folate status in the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom government announced in 2021 the intention to introduce mandatory folic acid fortification. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe folate status in the United Kingdom population prior to the implementation of mandatory folic acid fortification of non-whole wheat (non-wholemeal) flour and to assess trends in folate status, including in f

Diet, Digestion, and the Dietitian: A Survey of Clinicians' Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices to Advance the Treatment of Gastrointestinal Disturbances in Individuals with Anorexia Nervosa.

Despite advances in treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN), current therapeutic approaches do not fully consider gastrointestinal disturbances (GID), often present in AN. Addressing GID, both symptoms and disorders, is likely to improve treatment adherence and outcomes in people with AN. GID are complex and are linked to a range of factors related to eating disorder symptomology and can be impacted by nutritional treatment. It is not known which dietetic practices are currently used to address GID in AN. Therefore, this survey aimed to explore the perceived knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP

Changes in food patterns over a 10-year period in the UK adult population: findings from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults is increasing worldwide. Food portion size (PS) is an important environmental determinant of energy intake (EI) and may contribute to the obesity epidemic. However, UK evidence on the typical PS of commonly consumed foods in adults and how these may have changed over time is limited. Using combined data from Years 1-4 (2008/2009-2011/2012) and Years 9-11 (2016/2017-2018/2019) of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS), this study examined trends in the PS of commonly consumed food groups over the last decade among UK adults. Significant

Oropharyngeal dysphagia management and informed consent: a survey of speech-language pathologists' practice patterns when recommending modified texture diets.

PURPOSE: The modification of diet textures and liquid viscosity represents the primary form of management of oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) by speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Despite the ubiquitous use of modified texture diets (MTDs) to prevent aspiration in an attempt to prevent pneumonia, there is no convincing evidence that consumption of MTDs protects individuals with dysphagia from developing pneumonia. Furthermore, informed consent is required for the prescription of MTDs. To date, no study has investigated if practicing SLPs know the risks associated with MTDs, consider the risks wh

Anti-inflammatory diet reduces risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease among US adults: a nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND: While dietary intervention was an important public health strategy for the prevention and intervention of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), the effect of diet-induced inflammation on MAFLD has not been studied in detail. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and MAFLD. METHODS: This study included data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2018. MAFLD was diagnosed based on the presence of hepatic steatosis, as determined by transient elastography, along with evidence of either

Women's Barriers to Weight Loss, Perception of Future Diabetes Risk and Opinions of Diet Strategies Following Gestational Diabetes: An Online Survey.

Weight loss after gestational diabetes (GDM) reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM); however, weight loss remains challenging in this population. In order to explore perceptions of T2DM risk, barriers to weight loss, and views of diet strategies in women with previous GDM, a cross-sectional online survey of n = 429 women in Australia aged ≥18 years with previous GDM was conducted. Opinions of intermittent energy restriction (IER) were of interest. Seventy-five percent of responders (n = 322) had overweight or obesity, and 34% (n = 144) believed they had a high risk of developing T2DM. With

Association between diet quality and measures of body adiposity using the Rate Your Plate survey in patients presenting for coronary angiography.

BACKGROUND: Diet is a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease; however, dietary patterns are historically difficult to capture in the clinical setting. Healthcare providers need assessment tools that can quickly summarize dietary patterns. Research should evaluate the effectiveness of these tools, such as Rate Your Plate (RYP), in the clinical setting. HYPOTHESIS: RYP diet quality scores are associated with measures of body adiposity in patients referred for coronary angiography. METHODS: Patients without a history of coronary revascularization (n = 400) were prospectively approach

Micronutrients: highlights and research challenges from the 1994-5 National Diet and Nutrition Survey of people aged 65 years and over.

The aims of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey series are summarized, and the new National Diet and Nutrition Survey of people aged 65 years and over is explored, with particular emphasis on micronutrient intakes and status indices. Mean nutrient intakes were generally satisfactory for most micronutrients, but intakes of vitamin D, Mg, K and Cu were low. Intakes of vitamin D were far below the reference nutrient intake for people aged 65 years and over, and there was also biochemical evidence of vitamin D deficiency, for 8% of free-living and 37% of institution participants, attributed par

Effect of Physical Activity on the Association Between Diet and Constipation: Evidence From the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2010.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Previous studies have shown that diet and physical activity can influence constipation. However, the combined effect of diet and physical activity on constipation remains unclear. METHODS: Constipation was defined based on stool consistency and frequency, while overall diet quality was assessed using Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 scores. Participants were categorized into low (metabolic equivalent [MET]-min/wk < 500) and high physical activity groups (MET-min/wk ≥ 500). The association between diet and constipation across physical activity groups was analyzed using survey l
