Dietary psyllium fiber increases intestinal heat shock protein 25 expression in mice.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) protect intestinal epithelial cell function, integrity and viability against many forms of stress. We hypothesized that dietary fibers (DFs) in the diet may increase HSP expression, since DFs are known to exhibit beneficial effects on intestinal health. The present study investigated the regulation of intestinal HSP expression by DFs, particularly psyllium fiber. Feeding psyllium fiber for 5 d increased HSP25 expression, but not HSP32 and HSP70 expression in the jejunum, ileum, and colon of mice at both the protein and mRNA levels. The increases in HSP25 expression d

Association between dietary fiber intake and cancer cachexia: mediation by inflammatory biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Cancer cachexia (CC) is a major cause of death in cancer patients, with chronic inflammation being a key driver. Dietary fiber, a nutrient with strong anti-inflammatory potential, is closely linked to mortality risk in cancer patients. However, the association between dietary fiber intake and cachexia risk remains unclear. METHOD: This study collected dietary and clinical data from cancer patients enrolled in the "Investigation for Current States of Dietary Intake and Its Influencing Factors in Patients with Common Cancers" (DIIFC). First, we analyzed the association between dieta

Impact of dietary fiber/starch ratio in shaping caecal microbiota in rabbits.

The objective of this experiment was to determine whether changing the dietary neutral detergent fiber (NDF)/starch ratio affected caecal microbiota when 4 different diets (diet A: 2.3 NDF/starch, diet B: 1.9, diet C: 1.4, diet D: 1.0) were formulated. A total of 200 weaned rabbits (35 days old, 50 per group) were used for the experiment, which started after an adaptation period of 7 days (i.e., day 42). Caecal contents were obtained from rabbits fed different NDF/starch diets at 52, 62, 72, and 82 days of life. The bacterial community structure was characterized by high-throughput 16S rRNA se

Dietary fiber and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: results from 5 large cohort studies.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fast-progressing neurodegenerative disease with a median survival time from diagnosis of 1.5-3 years. The cause of ALS is unknown, but inflammation may play a role. Fiber has been shown to lower inflammatory markers, and a high fiber intake was associated with a lower risk of ALS in a case-control study; however, prospective studies are lacking. We explored the relation between dietary intake of fiber and the risk of ALS in 5 large prospective cohort studies comprising over 1,050,000 US citizens who contributed 1,133 ALS cases during a mean of 15 years

Production and characterization of insoluble dietary fiber-based oleogel via capillary force-driven structuring: Influence of water and fiber content.

A novel fiber-based oleogel was prepared by capillary force-driven structuring of pomegranate seed meal insoluble dietary fiber (PSMF) in pomegranate seed oil (PSO). The effects of particle fraction (φ) and secondary fluid (water) content (S) on oleogel formation were assessed through microstructural, rheological, textural, and oil loss analyses. Increasing S shifted the system from fluid-like to gel-like behavior, with optimal properties at S = 0.5 and φ = 0.4, yielding the highest yield stress (1286 Pa), greatest hardness (109.44 N), and lowest oil loss. The formulation with S = 0.5 and φ =

Unlocking the nutritional benefits of dietary fiber in sow feed: a short review.

Dietary fiber is a critical nutrient in sow diet and was addressed in several studies in the past decades. It plays a key role in improving digestive health, supporting metabolic functions, and enhancing the overall well-being of sows. Fiber, a plant-based feed ingredient is classified into soluble and insoluble fibers. Soluble fibers, such as pectin, dissolve in water and can form gels, influencing the fermentation process in the gut. Insoluble fibers, like cellulose, do not dissolve in water and contribute to the bulk of fecal matter, promoting intestinal motility. In sow nutrition, dietary

Dietary fiber in pediatric gastrointestinal health: a narrative review of evidence and challenges.

Dietary fiber plays a central role in pediatric gastrointestinal health; however, most children worldwide consume amounts well below recommended levels. Current pediatric guidelines from the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (2014) and global nutrition guidance from the World Health Organization recommend adequate dietary fiber intake as part of a balanced diet to support digestive health and prevent noncommunicable diseases. These recommendations generally correspond to daily fiber intake levels of approximately 14-31 g/day, or the practical rule

Managing Constipation and Its Risks in Parkinson's Disease: Is There a Role for Dietary Fiber?

A common consequence of Parkinson's disease (PD) is constipation. Beyond its deleterious effect on the quality of life in affected persons, constipation is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis and microbial-generated inflammatory metabolites, which may further disease progression. Management strategies are needed, and diet, specifically higher fiber dietary patterns or fiber supplements, may be recommended. However, therapeutic effectiveness and potential health benefits have been underexplored, and risks may be unappreciated. This perspective addresses whether high-fiber diets and fiber s

The role of dietary fibers in regulating appetite, an overview of mechanisms and weight consequences.

Dietary fibers prevent obesity through reduction of hunger and prolongation of satiety. A number of mechanical and endocrine signals from gastrointestinal tract are stimulated by fibers and their fermentation products, reach regions of brain involved in the regulation of appetite, and ultimately reduce food intake. Gastric distention, delayed gastric emptying, prevention of hypoglycemic, increased amounts of unabsorbed nutrients reaching to the ileum, and stimulation of enteroendocrine cells for secretion of cholecystokinin, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and peptide YY are among mechanisms

Therapeutic Benefits and Dietary Restrictions of Fiber Intake: A State of the Art Review.

Throughout history, malnutrition and deficiency diseases have been a problem for our planet's population. A balanced diet significantly influences everyone's health, and fiber intake appears to play a more important role than previously thought. The natural dietary fibers are a category of carbohydrates in the constitution of plants that are not completely digested in the human intestine. High-fiber foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, have consistently been highly beneficial to health and effectively reduced the risk of disease. Although the mode of action of dietary fiber in t

The behavior of dietary fiber in the gastrointestinal tract determines its physiological effect.

A diet rich in dietary fiber (DF) is considered healthy and recommended dietary intake of DF is established all over the world. The physiological effect of DF is mostly related to its behavior during digestion. In this review, the behavior of DF in the human digestive tract is discussed and linked to its physiological effect with special attention to four aspects of such behavior: (i) the modulation of bioavailability by the plant cell walls, (ii) the effect of DF on the rheological and colloidal state of digesta, (iii) the binding of DF with phenolic compounds, bile salts, mineral ions, and d
