Diffusion tensor imaging of articular cartilage using a navigated radial imaging spin-echo diffusion (RAISED) sequence.

OBJECTIVE: To validate a radial imaging spin-echo diffusion tensor (RAISED) sequence for high-resolution diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of articular cartilage at 3 T. METHODS: The RAISED sequence implementation is described, including the used non-linear motion correction algorithm. The robustness to eddy currents was tested on phantoms, and accuracy of measurement was assessed with measurements of temperature-dependent diffusion of free water. Motion correction was validated by comparing RAISED with single-shot diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging (EPI) measures. DTI was acquired in asympt

Influence of diffusion on the stability of equilibria in a reaction-diffusion system modeling cholera dynamic.

A reaction-diffusion system modeling cholera epidemic in a non-homogeneously mixed population is introduced. The interaction between population and toxigenic Vibrio cholerae concentration in contaminated water has been taken into account. The existence of biologically meaningful equilibria is investigated together with their linear and nonlinear stability. Using the data collected during the Haiti cholera epidemic, a numerical simulation is performed.

Provenance Tracing in Network Diffusion Algorithms.

We propose a novel strategy for provenance tracing in random walk-based network diffusion algorithms, a problem that has been surprisingly overlooked in spite of the widespread use of diffusion algorithms in biological applications. Our path-based approach enables ranking paths by the magnitude of their contribution to each node's score, offering insight into how information propagates through a network. Building on this capability, we introduce two quantitative measures: (i) path-based effective diffusion, which evaluates how well a diffusion algorithm leverages the full topology of a network

HarmonPaint: Harmonized Training-Free Diffusion Inpainting.

Existing inpainting methods often require extensive retraining or fine-tuning to integrate new content seamlessly, yet they struggle to maintain coherence in both structure and style between inpainted regions and the surrounding background. Motivated by these limitations, we introduce HarmonPaint, a training-free inpainting framework that seamlessly integrates with the attention mechanisms of diffusion models to achieve high-quality, harmonized image inpainting without any form of training. By leveraging masking strategies within self-attention, HarmonPaint ensures structural fidelity without

Reaction-diffusion processes with surface autocatalysis.

Autocatalytic processes underlie diverse systems in which replication is triggered at interfaces, including heterogeneous catalysis on solid substrates, enzyme activity at membranes, viral infections, biofilm growth, and spatially structured ecosystems. In a typical scenario, particles diffuse through a bulk medium and interact with surface regions, where they may either disappear or reproduce through branching, cloning, or splitting. The interplay between loss and replication at surfaces gives rise to rich population dynamics. Here, we develop a general theoretical framework for diffusion-med

Velocities of transmission eigenchannels and diffusion.

The diffusion model is used to calculate both the time-averaged flow of particles in stochastic media and the propagation of waves averaged over ensembles of disordered static configurations. For classical waves exciting static disordered samples, such as a layer of paint or a tissue sample, the flux transmitted through the sample may be dramatically enhanced or suppressed relative to predictions of diffusion theory when the sample is excited by a waveform corresponding to a transmission eigenchannel. Even so, it is widely assumed that the velocity of waves is irretrievably randomized in scatt

SILVR: Guided Diffusion for Molecule Generation.

Computationally generating new synthetically accessible compounds with high affinity and low toxicity is a great challenge in drug design. Machine learning models beyond conventional pharmacophoric methods have shown promise in the generation of novel small-molecule compounds but require significant tuning for a specific protein target. Here, we introduce a method called selective iterative latent variable refinement (SILVR) for conditioning an existing diffusion-based equivariant generative model without retraining. The model allows the generation of new molecules that fit into a binding site

Research Progress in Diffusion Spectrum Imaging.

Studies have demonstrated that many regions in the human brain include multidirectional fiber tracts, in which the diffusion of water molecules within image voxels does not follow a Gaussian distribution. Therefore, the conventional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) that hypothesizes a single fiber orientation within a voxel is intrinsically incapable of revealing the complex microstructures of brain tissues. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) employs a pulse sequence with different b-values along multiple gradient directions to sample the diffusion information of water molecules in the entire q-sp

Diffusion-weighted imaging in Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) is routinely used in abdominal imaging. In addition to neoplastic diseases, inflammatory changes can be delineated and diagnosed based on diffusion restriction in DWI. DWI is also increasingly used in the context of MRI of the small and large intestine. OBJECTIVE: This article focuses on the technical aspects of DWI and its role in the diagnosis of Crohn's disease (CD) as well as in the grading of disease severity and in treatment monitoring. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Guidelines, basic research papers, and review articles were analyzed. RESULTS: Diffusi

Mapping frontoinsular cortex from diffusion microstructure.

We developed a novel method for mapping the location, surface area, thickness, and volume of frontoinsular cortex (FI) using structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging. FI lies in the ventral part of anterior insular cortex and is characterized by its distinctive population von Economo neurons (VENs). Functional neuroimaging studies have revealed its involvement in affective processing, and histopathology has implicated VEN loss in behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia and chronic alcoholism; however, structural neuroimaging of FI has been relatively limited. We delineated FI by

Nonlinear diffusion in multicomponent liquid solutions.

Mutual diffusion in multicomponent liquids is studied. It is taken into consideration that the influence of complex formation on the diffusion process may be substantial. The theory is applied to analyze mass transfer in an acetone-chloroform solution. The molecular complex concentration was obtained from the analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectra of this solution. Taking into account molecular complex formation allows one to explain the experimental dependence of diffusion coefficients on the composition (components concentration). The accuracy of experimental and theoretical data des

Reaction-diffusion basis of retroviral infectivity.

Retrovirus particle (virion) infectivity requires diffusion and clustering of multiple transmembrane envelope proteins (Env3) on the virion exterior, yet is triggered by protease-dependent degradation of a partially occluding, membrane-bound Gag polyprotein lattice on the virion interior. The physical mechanism underlying such coupling is unclear and only indirectly accessible via experiment. Modelling stands to provide insight but the required spatio-temporal range far exceeds current accessibility by all-atom or even coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Nor do such approaches accou
