Gadolinium-free assessment of synovitis using diffusion tensor imaging.

The dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI parameter Ktrans can quantify the intensity of synovial inflammation (synovitis) in knees with osteoarthritis (OA), but requires the use of gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA). Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) measures the diffusion of water molecules with parameters mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA), and has been proposed as a method to detect synovial inflammation without the use of GBCA. The purpose of this study is to (1) determine the ability of DTI to quantify the intensity of synovitis in OA by comparing MD and FA with our imag

Diffusion Tensor Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Clinical Perspective.

Imaging the heart is central to cardiac phenotyping, but in clinical practice, this has been restricted to macroscopic interrogation. Diffusion tensor cardiovascular magnetic resonance (DT-CMR) is a novel, noninvasive technique that is beginning to unlock details of this microstructure in humans in vivo. DT-CMR demonstrates the helical cardiomyocyte arrangement that drives rotation and torsion. Sheetlets (functional units of cardiomyocytes, separated by shear layers) have been shown to reorientate between diastole and systole, revealing how microstructural function facilitates cardiac thickeni

Diffusion tensor imaging for evaluating perianal fistula: Feasibility study.

To explore the feasibility of using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in the diagnosis of anal fistula and evaluating its activity.Thirty-four patients with perianal fistulas were examined with DTI on a 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before undergoing surgery. Based on the surgery requirement and preoperative examinations, the lesions fell into 2 groups: the positive inflammation activity (PIA) group and the negative inflammation activity (NIA) group. Each lesion was divided into 3 regions of interest (ROIs) (i.e., the fistula area, edema area, and distant normal-appearing area). Fraction

Atlas-based diffusion tensor imaging correlates of executive function.

Impairment in executive function (EF) is commonly found in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Atlas-based diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) methods may be useful in relating regional integrity to EF measures in MCI and AD. Sixty-six participants (25 normal controls, 22 MCI, and 19 AD) received DTI scans and clinical evaluation. DTI scans were applied to a pre-segmented atlas and fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) were calculated. ANOVA was used to assess group differences in frontal, parietal, and cerebellar regions. For regions differing between group

Diffusion tensor imaging in Alzheimer's disease and affective disorders.

The functional organization of the brain in segregated neuronal networks has become a leading paradigm in the study of brain diseases. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) allows testing the validity and clinical utility of this paradigm on the structural connectivity level. DTI in Alzheimer's disease (AD) suggests a selective impairment of intracortical projecting fiber tracts underlying the functional disorganization of neuronal networks supporting memory and other cognitive functions. These findings have already been tested for their utility as clinical markers of AD in large multicenter studies.

Neuropathologic correlates for diffusion tensor imaging in postinfectious encephalopathy.

Acute necrotizing encephalopathy and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis are 2 rare types of acute postinfectious encephalopathy in children. Acute necrotizing encephalopathy is characterized by multiple symmetric lesions in the thalami, putamena, cerebral and cerebellar white matter, and brainstem. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis is an immune-mediated demyelinating central nervous system disorder that predominantly affects the white matter. Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging is sensitive to measuring water diffusion in the central nervous system in human and animal models. Recent stud

Diffusion tensor imaging of brain plasticity after occipital lobectomy.

Reorganization involving residual visual pathways with unilateral damage to the primary visual cortex was previously described. Using diffusion tensor imaging, we measured water diffusion-related changes in the optic radiation contralateral to occipital lobe ablation in children with intractable epilepsy. We studied 10 children who had undergone a resection of the unilateral occipital cortex and 13 control subjects. Diffusion tensor imaging was acquired using a 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance scanner. Fiber bundles representing optic radiation were tracked. Diffusion parameters included mean frac

Diffusion tensor imaging in Niemann-Pick Type C disease.

Niemann-Pick Type C disease is a homozygous recessive disorder resulting in errant intracellular cholesterol metabolism and the accumulation of intracellular unesterified cholesterol and sphingolipids. Although no current effective treatment exists for Niemann-Pick Type C disease, a number of therapies are under development in animal models. As therapies are brought into clinical trials, it will be extremely helpful to have a reliable means to track the progression of the disease and to monitor its response to therapy. In this effort, diffusion tensor imaging has been applied to investigate th

A review of diffusion tensor imaging studies in schizophrenia.

Both post-mortem and neuroimaging studies have contributed significantly to what we know about the brain and schizophrenia. MRI studies of volumetric reduction in several brain regions in schizophrenia have confirmed early speculations that the brain is disordered in schizophrenia. There is also a growing body of evidence suggesting that a disturbance in connectivity between different brain regions, rather than abnormalities within the separate regions themselves, are responsible for the clinical symptoms and cognitive dysfunctions observed in this disorder. Thus an interest in white matter fi

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy: comparison of conventional MR imaging with diffusion-weighted and diffusion tensor imaging: case report.

Conventional MR imaging, MR spectroscopy, diffusion-weighted imaging, and diffusion tensor imaging were performed in a 5-month-old male patient with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. On conventional T2-weighted MR images, symmetric, confluent high signal intensity was found in the temporoparietal white matter. A large lactate peak and decreased N-acetylaspartate were found in this region on proton MR spectroscopic images. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed increased apparent diffusion coefficient, representing vasogenic edema. Diffusion tensor imaging revealed decreased anisotropy, consistent wi

Diffusion tensor imaging of articular cartilage using a navigated radial imaging spin-echo diffusion (RAISED) sequence.

OBJECTIVE: To validate a radial imaging spin-echo diffusion tensor (RAISED) sequence for high-resolution diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of articular cartilage at 3 T. METHODS: The RAISED sequence implementation is described, including the used non-linear motion correction algorithm. The robustness to eddy currents was tested on phantoms, and accuracy of measurement was assessed with measurements of temperature-dependent diffusion of free water. Motion correction was validated by comparing RAISED with single-shot diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging (EPI) measures. DTI was acquired in asympt

Maple syrup urine disease: diffusion-weighted and diffusion-tensor magnetic resonance imaging findings.

We present conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with diffusion-weighted and diffusion-tensor imaging findings in a 10-day-old neonate with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). On conventional MR imaging, signal abnormalities were noted in the affected white matter of cerebellum, dorsal brainstem, thalami, posterior limbs of internal capsules, and the corona radiata. These regions showed marked hyperintensity on diffusion-weighted images with decreased apparent diffusion coefficient values (average 68% reduction). Diffusion-tensor imaging showed decreased anisotropy (average 57% reduction)

Anisotropic conductivity tensor imaging for transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) using magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (MR-DTI).

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a widely used non-invasive brain stimulation technique by applying low-frequency weak direct current via electrodes attached on the head. The tDCS using a fixed current between 1 and 2 mA has relied on computational modelings to achieve optimal stimulation effects. Recently, by measuring the tDCS current induced magnetic field using an MRI scanner, the internal current pathway has been successfully recovered. However, up to now, there is no technique to visualize electrical properties including the electrical anisotropic conductivity, effective
