Bos indicus cattle resistant to digital dermatitis exhibit a balanced proinflammatory cytokine response upon exposure to Treponema phagedenis in contrast to Bos taurus cattle.

Bovine digital dermatitis (BDD) is a globally distributed infectious hoof disease that negatively impacts the wellbeing and productivity of the affected animal. Treponema species and in particular Treponema phagedenis are the microbes strongly associated with the disease. Recently, it has been reported that Bos indicus cattle are more resistant to BDD and to the colonization by Treponema phagedenis in contrast to many Bos taurus breeds. This study investigated whether Bos indicus mount a different immune response to Treponema phagedenis compared with Bos taurus cattle, to better understand the

Bacterial species associated with bovine digital dermatitis of Finnish dairy cows using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and Treponema species-specific 4-plex real-time PCR.

Bovine digital dermatitis (DD) is a widespread polybacterial skin disorder affecting dairy and beef cattle, leading to significant animal welfare and economic problems worldwide. The disease primarily affects the hind feet skin, causing painful inflammation between the heel bulbs and resulting in lameness. This study investigated the bacterial compositions in different DD lesion stages and in healthy skin biopsy samples from 151 dairy cows on 36 Finnish farms. The lesions were first classified into six categories, including healthy skin (M0) and samples from different DD lesion stages (M1-M4.1

A survey of foot disinfection practices for control of bovine digital dermatitis: Evaluating solution depth, footbath hygiene, and the potential of footbaths as infection reservoirs for Treponema species.

Bovine digital dermatitis remains a widespread endemic disease of dairy cattle worldwide. Footbathing is commonly used as a control measure and has significant economic and environmental impacts. Few studies document footbathing practices on dairy farms or evaluate their suitability for achieving foot disinfection. This study describes footbathing practices on 32 farms observed in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Netherlands. We measured solution depth throughout footbathing and observed levels below 7 cm on 9 out of 32 farms, which leads to inadequate foot coverage. Solution depth was ass

Efficacy of quaternary ammonium salt-based disinfectant or chelated copper-zinc footbath solution in the treatment of digital dermatitis on one research dairy farm in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Footbaths can be used to manage digital dermatitis (DD), a common cause of lameness in dairy cattle. Copper sulfate and chelated copper-zinc (CZS) solutions in footbaths are potentially harmful to the environment. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To determine if a quaternary ammonium salt-based disinfectant (QASD) footbath is as effective as a chelated CZS solution in controlling DD in dairy cows. ANIMALS: Fifty-one lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups, with DD status based on the M-stage scoring system and locomotion score balanced between treatmen

Profiling bacterial communities in feedlot cattle affected with bovine foot rot and bovine digital dermatitis lesions using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and quantitative real-time PCR.

BACKGROUND: The primary infectious foot diseases in cattle, bovine foot rot (BFR) and bovine digital dermatitis (BDD), commonly associated with Fusobacterium necrophorum and Treponema spp., respectively, are considered polybacterial in etiology with several additional bacteria involved such as Porphyromonas levii, Bacteroides pyogenes, and Fusobacterium mortiferum. BDD is further classified into several M-stages (M2: active and ulcerative; M4: chronic proliferative). Using quantitative real-time PCR and 16S rRNA gene (V3-V4 region) sequencing, we quantified several specific bacteria and analyz

Filament formation associated with spirochetal infection: a comparative approach to Morgellons disease.

Bovine digital dermatitis is an emerging infectious disease that causes lameness, decreased milk production, and weight loss in livestock. Proliferative stages of bovine digital dermatitis demonstrate keratin filament formation in skin above the hooves in affected animals. The multifactorial etiology of digital dermatitis is not well understood, but spirochetes and other coinfecting microorganisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of this veterinary illness. Morgellons disease is an emerging human dermopathy characterized by the presence of filamentous fibers of undetermined composition

Hoof lesions in partly housed pasture-based dairy cows.

Lameness is a symptom of a painful disorder affecting the limbs, which impacts dairy cow welfare and productivity. Lameness is primarily caused by hoof lesions. The prevalence of different lesion types can differ depending on environmental conditions and farm management practices. The aims of this observational study were to establish the cow-level and herd-level lesion prevalence during both housing and grazing periods in a partly housed, pasture-based system, establish the prevalence of lesions always associated with pain ("alarm" lesion), identify the lesions associated with a higher lamene

Assessment of conformation scoring of the limbs as a potential explanatory factor for claw health in dairy cows.

The selection of breeding animals is critical for a robust livestock population. Conformation trait scoring represents a practical approach to evaluate a cow's potential for productivity, longevity, and suitability for breeding. The scored traits are assigned to 4 subsections: frame and capacity, pelvis, limbs, and udder. Previous studies examining associations between specific limb conformation traits and the incidence of claw lesions have found low to moderate associations. This observational study (n = 21,145 cows) investigates associations between claw health and the score encompassing all

Biomarker research is associated with high hopes for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis research. Although various effective treatments have been developed, many challenges remain concerning diagnostics and the development of targeted treatments, but also regarding a number of ethical and social issues. In this paper, building on a systematic literature review and review of reason, we examine the ethical and social debate on biomarker research for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. We discuss topics such as risks and benefits of stratification of patient groups, ethical aspects of big data and adva

A survey of United States dairy hoof care professionals on costs associated with treatment of foot disorders.

The objective of this study was to collect information regarding hoof care professionals' billing practices and to gather their opinions about foot disorders and the value of their prevention. Responses were gathered from veterinarians (n = 18) and hoof trimmers (n = 116) through both online and paper survey platforms. Because of the limited number of respondents, veterinarian responses were not further analyzed. Of the 6 foot disorders included in the survey, the treatment cost per case was greatest for toe ulcers (mean ± standard deviation; $20.2 ± 8.5), sole ulcers ($19.7 ± 8.6), white line

Mendelian randomization analysis of 34,497 German Holstein cows to infer causal associations between milk production and health traits.

BACKGROUND: Claw diseases and mastitis represent the most important health issues in dairy cattle with a frequently mentioned connection to milk production. Although many studies have aimed at investigating this connection in more detail by estimating genetic correlations, they do not provide information about causality. An alternative is to carry out Mendelian randomization (MR) studies using genetic variants to investigate the effect of an exposure on an outcome trait mediated by genetic variants. No study has yet investigated the causal association of milk yield (MY) with health traits in d

Ulcerative dermatitis, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, and desmitis caused by chronic infection with Serratia odorifera in a racehorse.

We investigated a case of severe Serratia odorifera infection in a racehorse. The horse had developed progressive lameness associated with swelling of the left tarsal region, which progressed to ulcerative dermatitis, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, and desmitis. The plantar side of the superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendon was visible through the skin ulcer, and coalescing nodules were present in the dermis. The horse was euthanized and an autopsy was performed. Grossly, in addition to the changes described above, severe edema of the soft tissues was associated with the ulcer. Microscopically, n

Fingertip dermatitis refractory to topical corticosteroids associated with nail-patella syndrome.

A 14-year-old girl and her 47-year-old father presented with fingernails that were hypoplastic, spoon-shaped and ridged since birth. Fingertip dermatitis and paronychia were also observed in the daughter, which had been present since birth and had progressively worsened. The daughter denied trauma to her fingernails or chronic exposure to irritants and allergens. She had previously tried topical corticosteroids for 18 months without any benefit. We put forward the possibility of chronic paronychia and fingertip dermatitis, refractory to topical corticosteroids, as associations of digital nail-
