The purpose of this study is to develop a fundamental material for cosmetics by encapsulating the extract obtained from Dioscorea quinqueloba using chitosan, a natural material. Active compounds were extracted using ethanol from Dioscorea quinqueloba produced in Andong, South Korea. These compounds were encapsulated in mucin extracted from Dioscorea quinqueloba and chitosan derived from cuttlefish bones to form microcapsules. The encapsulation process involves the formation of a W/O emulsion, followed by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. The resulting microcapsules were examined by scanning el

Dioscoreae hypoglaucae rhizome (DHR) is the dried rhizome of Dioscorea hypoglauca polibin, which is rich in steroidal saponins. The steroidal saponins present in DHR exhibit great pharmacological activities, particularly in inflammatory and anti-hyperuricemia effects. Despite steroidal saponins are recognized as primary bioactive components in DHR, the enrichment and purification processes of steroidal saponins is rare. The research aimed to explore the purification process and anti-inflammatory activity of steroidal saponins of DHR. Firstly, the steroidal saponins in DHR were characterized by

The Chinese yam (Dioscorea polystachya, DP) is promising for the food and pharmaceutical industries due to its nutritional value and pharmaceutical potential. Its proper cultivation is therefore of interest. An insufficient supply of minerals necessary for plant growth can be manifested by discoloration of the leaves. In our earlier study, magnesium deficiency was excluded as a cause. As a follow-up, this work focused on manganese and molybdenum. To quantify both minerals in leaf extracts of DP, analytical methods based on atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) using the graphite furnace sub-tec

BACKGROUND: Chronic Cerebral Hypoperfusion (CCH) is a common, crucial and tough problem for old people. It easily leads to Lacunar Infarction and even Vascular Dementia (VD). Western medicine has the advantage to relieve some VD symptoms but fails to cure it. Some classic Chinese medicines have good efficacies to treat and delay the cerebral functional decline resulted from CCH. Among them Modified Dioscorea Pills (MDP) has been proven to have a convincing effect in curing VD. So far the knowledge about neuroplasticity in CCH is little known and the underlying interfered mechanism by MDP on ne

We examined the effects of Rhizoma Dioscoreae Tokoronis extracts (RDTEs) on plasma lipids, body weight, and lipogenic enzymes. Mice were administered a standard chow diet, a 60% high-fat diet, or a high-fat diet with RDTE. Mice that were fed a high-fat diet containing RDTE were found to have lower increases in body and epididymal adipose tissue weights and a lessened occurrence of hepatic steatosis than mice that were fed a high-fat diet. The decreased adiposity that was induced by RDTE accounted for lower plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, leptin, and glucose and a higher level of

Dioecious plants, which have distinct male and female individuals, constitute ~5% of angiosperm species and have emerged frequently and independently from hermaphroditic ancestors. Although recent molecular studies of sex determination have started to reveal the diversity of the genetic systems underlying dioecy, research on the evolution of dioecy is limited, especially in monocots. Here, we explore the molecular basis of sex determination in the monocot Dioscorea tokoro, a dioecious wild yam endemic to East Asia. Chromosome-scale and haplotype-resolved genome assemblies and linkage analysis

PURPOSE: Dioscorea dumetorum (locally known as Esuru {Yoruba tribe of Nigeria}) has been claimed to be used in folk medicine for the management of malaria without information on the anti-plasmodial rich fraction. It is against this background that the current study was designed to provide information on the anti-plasmodial rich fraction of Dioscorea dumetorium tubers.
METHODS: The n-hexane (nHF), ethylacetate (EAF), and n-butanol (nBF) fractions obtained from D. dumetorum tubers were screened for anti-plasmodial activity. The most potent fraction, nBF, was further subjected to column chromato

Yams are economic and medicinal crops with a long growth cycle, spanning between 9-11 months due to their prolonged tuber dormancy. Tuber dormancy has constituted a major constraint in yam production and genetic improvement. In this study, we performed non-targeted comparative metabolomic profiling of tubers of two white yam genotypes, (Obiaoturugo and TDr1100873), to identify metabolites and associated pathways that regulate yam tuber dormancy using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Yam tubers were sampled between 42 days after physiological maturity (DAPM) till tuber sprouting. T

This research evaluated the protective role of a combined extract of Dioscorea bulbifera and Zingiber officinale (DBZO) against respiratory dysfunction caused by particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure in BALB/c mice. The bioactive compounds identified in the DBZO are catechin, astragalin, 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 6-shogaol. DBZO ameliorated cell viability and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in PM2.5-stimulated A549 and RPMI 2650 cells. In addition, it significantly alleviated respiratory dysfunction in BALB/c mice exposed to PM2.5. DBZO improved the antioxidant systems in lung tissues

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease, and TL1A and its receptor DR3 play important roles in its pathogenesis. Th9 cells are involved in RA development. Dioscin from Dioscorea nipponica (DDN) has a therapeutic effect on RA, but its effect on TL1A/DR3 and Th9 cells remains unclear. A collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model was established in DBA/1 mice, and the therapeutic effects of DDN were determined using pathological sections and arthritis index scores. Western blotting and PCR were used to detect TL1A, DR3, PU.1, TGF-β and IRF-4. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was u
