Presence of Sergentomyia (Parrotomyia) lewisi (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Tunisia.

In Tunisia, 17 phlebotomine sand fly species are reported, belonging to genera Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia. However, subsequent to faunal studies and outbreaks of leishmaniasis in different regions of the country, unrecognized sand fly species could exist. Indeed, we report in this study the presence of Sergentomyia (Parrotomyia) lewisiParrot 1948. A brief collection of phlebotomine sand flies was undertaken in August 2016 in Khbina locality, in Sidi Bouzid governorate situated in Central Tunisia, which constitutes an old focus of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis. Sand flies were collected, u

External Ophthalmomyiasis Caused by Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Challiphoride) Larva.

Myiasis is an animal or human pathogenic condition initiated by parasitic dipterous fly larvae feeding in the host's necrotic or living tissue. Here we report a case of external ophthalmomyiasis caused by Lucilia sericata in a 78-yr-old with a vascular tumor of the retina and surgery history, from Bijar City of Kurdistan Province, Iran in 2015. Associated symptoms included right eye pain with mucoid ocular discharge, headache, sensing the presence of a foreign body in the eye and itching. Examination revealed a L. sericata Larva in his right eye. Infestation of ocular tissue by fly larvae (oph

Phylogenetic radiation of the greenbottle flies (Diptera, Calliphoridae, Luciliinae).

The subfamily Luciliinae is diverse and geographically widespread. Its four currently recognised genera (Dyscritomyia Grimshaw, 1901, Hemipyrellia Townsend, 1918, Hypopygiopsis Townsend 1916 and Lucilia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) contain species that range from saprophages to obligate parasites, but their pattern of phylogenetic diversification is unclear. The 28S rRNA, COI and Period genes of 14 species of Lucilia and Hemipyrellia were partially sequenced and analysed together with sequences of 11 further species from public databases. The molecular data confirmed molecular paraphyly in three s

Characterization of mitochondrial genome of Haemagogus janthinomys (Diptera: Culicidae).

Haemagogus janthinomys is a mosquito of high importance in public health due its involvement on natural wild cycles of two important arboviruses in the Brazilian Amazon region: Yellow Fever virus (Flaviviridae, Flavivirus) and Mayaro virus (Togaviridae, Alphavirus). Here, we have sequenced and described all the mitochondrial genes for the Hg. janthinomys species. The complete coding sequence is14 937 bp long and includes 37 functional genes, of which 13 codes for proteins, 22 for tRNA and 2 for ribosomal subunits. Region A + T (control region) is not presented here. The data should be helpful

MIDGUT ULTRASTRUCTURE OF FOURTH INSTAR OCHLEROTATUS TOGOI (DIPTERA: CULICIDAE).

The ultrastructure of the midgut of fourth instar Ochlerotatus togoi was investigated by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. This study was performed to provide information to help devise future control efforts aimed at the larval stages of this vector of filariasis. The fourth instar midgut was approximately 2 mm in length and consisted of three morphologically distinct cell types: epithelial, regenerative, and endocrine cells. There was a monolayer of epithelial cells on the luminal surface of the midgut, with multiple folds of the plasma membrane where it adjoined the base

The subgenus Adlerius Nitzulescu (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotomus) in Iran.

Phlebotomine sandflies of the subgenus Adlerius (Diptera: Psychodidae) includes 20 described species and two unnamed from Afghanistan. The female sandflies of this subgenus are considered as indistinguishable morphologically and their identification is based on the identification of associated males. Some species of Adlerius are suspected vectors of visceral leishmaniasis and at least one species has been implicated as a vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Four species of Adlerius have been recorded in Iran in the past: P. brevis Theodor and Mesghali, 1964, P. halepensis Theodor, 1948, P. longi

Diversity of Calliphoridae (Diptera) in Brazil's Tinguá Biological Reserve.

The Calliphoridae are flies of great ecological, medical and sanitary importance because they are decomposers of organic matter, mechanical vectors of pathogenic agents, and causers of myiasis. This paper attempts to ascertain the diversity of Calliphoridae in the Tinguá Biological Reserve and correlate meteorological data (temperature, relative humidity of the air, and precipitation) with the occurrence of these flies. The study was conducted at a site in the Tinguá Biological Reserve, located in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four traps were set up using ch

Higher West Nile Virus Infection in Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) and Culex (Diptera: Culicidae) Mosquitoes From Lower Income Neighborhoods in Urban Baltimore, MD.

The temperate United States has experienced increasing incidence of mosquito-borne diseases. Recent studies conducted in Baltimore, MD have demonstrated a negative relationship between abundances of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Culex mosquitoes and mean neighborhood income level, but have not looked at the presence of pathogens. Mosquitoes collected from five socioeconomically variable neighborhoods were tested for infection by West Nile, chikungunya, and Zika viruses in 2015 and 2016, and again from four of the neighborhoods in 2017. Minimum infection rates of pooled samples were compared amo

A reassessment of the Andean genus Myopella Malloch (Diptera: Anthomyiidae).

The small Andean genus Myopella Malloch with two included species, M. angustifrons Malloch and M. appendiculata (Stein), is re-examined with special attention to the morphology of the male and female abdomen and terminalia. Adult morphology corroborates the current position of Myopella as an Andean endemic genus of Anthomyiidae, but its position within the anthomyiid tree remains in doubt despite the newly attained morphological knowledge. The status of the name Myopinella Michelsen, as proposed recently to replace for the preoccupied name Myopella Malloch, is clarified.

Description of the puparium of Protocalliphora nourtevai (Insecta: Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Avian blowflies are obligatory blood-sucking parasite larvae that typically pupariate in bird nests. The empty puparia are diagnostically important, as they are usually the only evidence for the presence of these parasites in nests. Compared to the Nearctic region, very little is known about puparia of Palearctic species. Here, we provide the first description of puparia of Protocalliphora nourtevai from nests of 2 bird species, namely, Phoenicurus phoenicurus and Phoenicurus ochruros from Finland. Puparia possessed irregular pronounced folds in the hyper-, meso-, and hypostigmatal region, and

Oral infection by Diptera larvae in children: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Oral myiasis is usually caused by flies of the order Diptera. One of the causes of human myiasis is Cochliomyia hominivorax, which is a true obligate parasite of mammals. METHODS: A case of oral myiasis in a 5-year-old girl is reported. She presented with a swelling on the hard palate accompanied by intense pain and a fetid odor. A literature review of oral myiasis reports in children was performed. RESULTS: The poor oral hygiene, lip incompetence, open bite, and residence in a rural area were considered to be predisposing factors for larval infestation in this patient. Treatment

A molecular marker for the identification of Simulium squamosum (Diptera: Simuliidae).

All except one of the important groups of West African vectors of Onchocerca volvulus that lie within the Simulium damnosum complex can be distinguished from each other using morphological characteristics. The exception is S. squamosum, which overlaps with other species, and this results in significant levels of misidentification. Variation in the untranscribed H3-H4 histone intergenic spacer region of flies of the S. damnosum complex has now been investigated. Although a CAA/CAG microsatellite was found to be hyper-variable and unsuitable for species diagnosis, a 10-bp indel seemed to vary in

Diptera of sanitary importance associated with composting of biosolids in Argentina.

OBJECTIVE: Odorous compounds produced at the biosolids composting plant in Bariloche (NW Patagonia) attract a variety of insects, mainly belonging to the order Diptera. In order to characterize these flies, collected specimens were taxonomically identified, their community characteristics were described and their sanitary and synanthropic importance and autochthonous or introduced character were determined. METHODS: Sampling was performed from October 1999 until March 2000. Adults were collected using an entomological net, and larvae and puparia were obtained from the composting material and

A rare case of gingival myiasis caused by diptera (Calliphoridae).

Myiasis was first described by Hope in 1840. Since then, many cases of myiasis affecting different human organs have been reported. Oral myiasis is very rare in healthy persons but occurs mainly in the tropics and associated with inadequate public and personal hygiene. In this case report, we present clinical findings gingival myiasis. The patient was 26-year-old farmer and his chief complaint was discomfort and swelling in his maxillary gingiva. The patient's medical and family histories were non-contributory and oral hygiene was not acceptable. The diagnosis was based on the characteristic c

In vivo rearing and development of Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae).

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner, 1862) has a seasonal cycle from May to September. The main objective of the current study is the rearing and development in the laboratory, outside its natural life cycle. The free and obligate parasite phases were reared in the laboratory during 7 mo, from 16 September to 26 March. Between 97.49 and 98.27% of the third instars reached the pupal stage (at 24 degrees C and under natural light cycle). Between 73.98 and 92.24% of the pupae developed into adults (at 70% RH and 22 degrees C). In the induced cycle the ratio of females to males was between 1.87:1.00 an
