Is Dirofilaria repens endemic in the Havelland district in Brandenburg, Germany?

In Brandenburg, northeastern Germany, an outbreak of zoonotic Dirofilaria repens in a sledge dog kennel was detected in January, 2012. Using the modified Knott test, 8 out of 28 adult dogs were microfilaria positive. A D. repens-specific PCR based on the internal transcribed spacer 2 region detected filarial DNA in 11 of these dogs. Northeastern Germany is currently considered to be free of Dirofilaria. The 39% prevalence within the kennel and the fact that the dogs transiently stayed in endemic areas only during the winter suggest that autochthonous infections occurred. Analysis of weather da

The prevention of Dirofilaria repens infection with ivermectin/pyrantel chewables.

This trial was conducted to test the efficacy of ivermectin/pyrantel chewables in preventing the development of Dirofilaria repens in dogs. The trial included 155 dogs from an endemic area in North-Western Italy. Prior to enrollment in the study, none of the dogs had microfilariae of D. immitis or D. repens in a concentration test, and all dogs were also seronegative for adult heartworm antigen. Animals remained with their owners and were dosed six times, at monthly intervals according to body weight. Efficacy against D. repens was evaluated approximately 6 and 12 months after the first dosing

An unexpected case of a dog from Poland co-infected with Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria Immitis.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariasis is a vector-borne disease caused by parasitic nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria spp., considered an emerging concern in both veterinary and human medicine. Climate changes and human activities, such as pet travel, contribute to the spread of diseases to new non-endemic regions. Poland is dominated by subcutaneous dirofilariasis caused by D. repens infections. Cardiopulmonary dirofilariasis, also known as a heartworm disease is much more rare with only single autochthonous cases reported so far. Also, imported infections are observed sporadically in dogs traveling to

Subconjunctival human dirofilariasis by Dirofilaria repens in the Mediterranean Basin.

PURPOSE: Human dirofilariasis cases have increased in Europe for the last few decades. We document an autochthonous case of dirofilariasis infection in the subconjunctival space of a 60-year-old Spanish man. OBSERVATIONS: The patient presented with pain in his right eye, which was diagnosed as epi-scleritis. In spite of the treatment administered, no improvement was reported. An external exam showed conjunctival congestion on the temporal part of the right eye bulbar conjunctiva. The anterior chamber showed no flare or cells in both eyes and dilated fundus exam was normal. Nevertheless, a lon

Recent advances on Dirofilaria repens in dogs and humans in Europe.

Dirofilaria repens is a nematode affecting domestic and wild canids, transmitted by several species of mosquitoes. It usually causes a non-pathogenic subcutaneous infection in dogs and is the principal agent of human dirofilariosis in the Old World. In the last decades, D. repens has increased in prevalence in areas where it has already been reported and its distribution range has expanded into new areas of Europe, representing a paradigmatic example of an emergent pathogen. Despite its emergence and zoonotic impact, D. repens has received less attention by scientists compared to Dirofilaria i

Subconjunctival Dirofilaria repens infection in a dog resident in the UK.

Dirofilaria repens infection was diagnosed in a 5-year-old female German shepherd crossbreed, originally from Romania but brought into the UK in February 2014. The dog presented with conjunctivitis in March 2014 and then again 2 months later with additional ocular and nasal mucopurulent discharge. Bacterial cultures from the nasolacrimal duct were negative for bacterial growth. The case was referred in August 2014 for ophthalmic examination, which revealed abnormalities in both eyes, especially the left. They included mild palpebral conjunctival hyperaemia and marked follicular conjunctivitis,

Detection of Dirofilaria repens microfilariae in a dog from Portugal.

Dirofilaria repens causes subcutaneous infection in dogs and cats, and is the main agent of human dirofilariosis in Europe. Detection of D. repens is described in a dog from Portugal, a finding that simultaneously represents the first presumable case of autochthonous infection with the parasite in any animal host species in the country. A mixed D. repens/Dirofilaria immitis infection (20:1 ratio) was found, with an overall density of 1267 microfilariae per millilitre of blood. Morphological features, including morphometry, and acid phosphatase histochemical staining confirmed identity of the t

Uncovering human Dirofilaria repens infections: new cases in Southern Italy.

Dirofilaria repens is the primary etiological agent of human dirofilariosis in the Old World, with Italy reporting the highest number of cases in Europe. This study describes two new cases of D. repens infection in humans, in southern Italy, where canine dirofilariosis is endemic. The first case involved a 33-year-old man from Caserta (Campania, Southern Italy) who presented with a subcutaneous mass on the upper eyelid. Surgical excision revealed an immature female D. repens worm measuring 14 cm, lacking microfilariae in both the uterus and peripheral blood. The second case was a 67-year-old m

[Autochthonous filaria in south-west France caused by Dirofilaria repens].

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariasis is an autochthonous disease caused by Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens, a subcutaneous parasite of dogs and other carnivorous animals. Human infection leads to a self-limiting disease that generally presents clinically as a subcutaneous nodule. We describe a case occurring outside the classical endemic Mediterranean region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 38-year-old woman presented with a scalp nodule present for six months. Surgery revealed a thread-like parasite identified as a female Dirofilaria repens without microfilariae. DISCUSSION: This case points to the spread of

[Conjunctival dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria Repens. A new Tunisian case].

INTRODUCTION: Dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria repens is a parasitic disease affecting domestic animals and transmitted to man by mosquito bites. Human infestation is rare and involves benign subcutaneous and ocular manifestations. The diagnosis is made by excisional biopsy, which is also the sole recommended treatment. There are few reports of human infection in Tunisia. CASE REPORT: We report herein the second case of conjunctival dirofilariasis in a 21-year-old woman residing in Tunis (Tunisia). The clinical presentation evoked orbital cellulites. Clinical and radiological investigations

Potential mosquito (Diptera:Culicidae) vector of Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis in urban areas of Eastern Slovakia.

This paper follows the study from 2013 focused on the molecular screening of mosquitoes as vectors of Dirofilaria spp. which provided the information on Aedes vexans as a potential vector of Dirofilaria repens in Slovakia. Current entomological and molecular research indicates that Ae. vexans can participate also in the transmission of Dirofilaria immitis within the region. Using the standard PCR method, we examined 10,500 mosquitoes (Ae. vexans, Ae. rossicus, Anopheles maculipennis s.l., Ochlerotatus sticticus, Ochlerotatus cantans, Ochlerotatus caspius, Culex pipiens/Culex torrentium, Coquil
