We report a case of subconjunctival invasion of Dirofilaria repens in a woman from Southern Bulgaria. Dirofilariasis is an extremely rare parasitic disease for Bulgaria. It occurs as an endemic parasitosis in the Mediterranean countries. It is caused by helminths of the genus Dirofilaria, which are parasites in dogs, cats, foxes, wolves - the final hosts of the parasite. It may very rarely occur in humans, the infection triggered by a bite of bloodsucking mosquitoes, which are the intermediate hosts of Dirofilaria. The clinical forms of dirofilariasis in humans are subcutaneous, pulmonary and

The paper describes cases of dirofilariasis in the Nizhny Novgorod Region in 2006-2010. During this period 26 patients with dirofilariasis were registered. Their age was 20 to 68 years; the maximum cases (26.9%) were among those aged 50-59 years. Females constituted most cases (70%). In 73% of patients, the helminth was found in different areas of the head, with the predominant involvement of eye lesion (34.6%), in the temple (11.5%), cheek (8%), and nose (8%). Dirofilaria were randomly detected in 2 patients. Helminth migration occurred in 15.3% of cases. No clear seasonality for this helmint

Out of 3 species of the nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria recorded in the Primorye Territory, only D. repens was found in human beings. In the past 3 years, there have been 8 cases of human dirofilariasis, of which only one case can be considered to be imported. Mosquitoes are vectors of dirofilariasis. Infestation occurred in the west and south districts of the Territory. The nematodes were most frequently detected first in the eye. Hence they migrated beneath the scalp giving rise to capsules on the cheek, occiput, forehead, or temple. The parasites were extracted only surgically.

The paper describes cases of dirofilariasis in the residents of Tula and the Tula Region. One of the cases does not fit into the traditional concepts. On excising a tumor in an adolescent, two live actively moving nonencapsulated helminths: a male and a female Dirofilaria repens worms were removed, which were identified at the parasitology laboratory, Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Tula Region.

A patient with a diagnosis of chronic and idiopathic unilateral dacryoadenitis was submitted to our clinic for diagnostic reasons from a regional hospital. Within a period of 1 year, this was the second onset of a swelling in the region of the lacrimal gland which - unlike the first time - showed resistance to antibiotic treatment. The patient's general and ophthalmic condition was good, and his only complaint was of cosmetic nature because of the disfiguring swelling in the lateral part of the left upper eyelid. Basic laboratory findings showed no abnormalities and radiographic imaging showed

Dirofilaria repens Railliet et Henry, 1911 was for the first time studied in the Moscow Region where 11 patients (6 males and 5 females) aged 4-72 years were recorded in 2000-2002. The geographical distribution (the southern and south-eastern parts of the region) of local cases of dirofiliriasis, was observed. There was a relatively high rate of D. repens in the male genitalia of the infected patients as compared with that reported by other authors. In accordance with the current terminology, D. repens in the Moscow Region is proposed to be regarded as emerging infection. The authors show it n

Heartworm disease is described in a 14-month-old neutered female ferret (Mustela putorius furo) which had a three-week history of sneezing, anorexia and dyspnoea. Echocardiography revealed the presence of heartworms as hyperechoic densities within the right atrial and ventricular cavities. At necropsy, four Dirofilaria immitis parasites (three females, one male) were found in the right heart, the cranial vena cava and the caudal vena cava. Histopathological findings were similar to those reported in canine heartworm disease. Echocardiography may be a useful method of diagnosis of heartworm dis

Authors describe another case of subcutaneous dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens in France. A 26-year-old woman was infected while on vacation in Cap d'Agde on the Mediterranean coast. The patient presented with a subcutaneous nodule in the right subclavicular region. Examination of the nodule after surgical excision revealed the presence of a worm identified as an immature female Dirofilaria repens. Dirofilariasis is a rare anthroponotic disease encountered only in the Old World, particularly in Southeastern France including Corsica which has the second highest number of re

Human dirofilariasis is a disease which is considered to be rare in Greece, less than 20 cases having been reported prior to 1990. The clinical manifestations were usually subcutaneous nodules, and in only two cases there was ocular dirofilariasis. Eight new cases were recognized in humans during the last six years in Athens, two of which with ophthalmic involvement. Twelve additional cases have been detected but not published in Thessaloniki. In all human cases, the worms were identified as being Dirofilaria repens (D. conjunctivae). The identification was based on the morphological observati

We report a case of ocular dirofilariasis in a 68-year-old man manifesting as pre-septal abscess with gradually increasing swelling of the left eyelid and near complete ptosis of eye. A live worm was seen wriggling in the lesion while the abscess was being drained and was extracted carefully. Subsequently, it was identified as an adult female Dirofilaria repens worm. The lid edema and swelling resolved and the patient was discharged without any residual complaints.

PURPOSE: To report a 12-year-old patient with a rapid growing orbital mass and imaging findings suggestive of rhabdomyosarcoma that was found to be dirofilariasis after mass resection.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 12-year-old patient with a rapid growing orbital mass involving medial part of orbit and medial rectus muscle and imaging findings suggestive of rhabdomyosarcoma. Histopathologic examination showed the mass to be composed of granulomatous inflammation and the thread-like object to be Dirofilaria repens. The patient was well post-operation without morbidity. In this paper, we describe

Dirofilariasis is an emerging helminthic zoonosis seldom reported. Humans are accidental hosts and rarely affected. We report a case of dirofilariasis presenting as a subcutaneous nodule in the uncommon location in the thigh with concealed history of dog meat handler. Of the cases published in literature, imaging findings of this disease have been few and far between. In this article, we describe multimodality imaging findings of dirofilariasis in the thigh.

PURPOSE: Human dirofilariasis is a helminthic infestation caused by filarial nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria. We report two cases of subconjunctival dirofilariasis in adult Chinese patients.
CASE REPORTS: Case 1: A 57-year-old woman presented to us with 1-day history of left eye redness and migratory foreign body sensation. Physical examination showed a temporal subconjunctival motile mass in her left eye. Immediate surgical exploration showed a live nonpigmented roundworm measuring 120 mm in length with morphology compatible with Dirofilaria. It was later identified to be Dirofilaria repe

Solitary pulmonary nodules are a common finding on chest radiography and CT. We present the case of an asymptomatic 59-year-old male found to have a 13 mm left upper lobe nodule on CT scan. The patient was asymptomatic and the CT was performed to follow up mediastinal and hilar lymphadenopathy that had been stable on several previous CT scans. He had a history of emphysema and reported a 15 pack-year smoking history. PET-CT was performed which demonstrated mild 18-FDG uptake within the nodule. Given his age and smoking history, malignancy was a consideration and he underwent a wedge resection.

Dirofilariasis is a zoonotic infection caused by filarial nematodes belonging to the genus dirofilariae. Dirofilaria is commonly seen in dogs, cats and other carnivorous animals world wide. Mosquitoes of the genus Culex, Anopheles and Aedes are the vectors and the humans are either incidental hosts or dead-end hosts. It affects lungs, liver and other visceral organs. Ocular involvement is rarely been reported. We present a case of 51-year-old female from Kerala, the southern State of India presented with a mass mimicking lacrimal sac mucocoele whose biopsy is proved to be dirofilariasis.

Human ocular dirofilariasis is a zoonotic disease, rare in Europe, caused by filarial nematodes. The parasite is either encysted in a subcutaneous nodule or located under the bulbar conjunctiva. We report the case of a 62-year-old man with intravitreal dirofilariasis, which is a rare site of presentation of the nematode in the human eye. It was located in the fundus area and was surgically removed. The nematode was identified as Dirofilaria repens (D. conjuctiva) by two different Microbiology Departments, making this the fifth report of identified intravitreal dirofilariasis caused by D. repen
