Hearing the deaf nursing student: Navigating inclusive nurse education in ableist learning environments.

AIM: This aim of this discussion paper is to explore and reflect those biases and limiting discriminatory practices of those of us entrusted to support the educational journey of a deaf Mental Health student nurse, through his lens, to reconsider and re-examine what it means to be genuinely inclusive. BACKGROUND: Adopting an ethos of social justice, this discussion connects the narrative of this student to those who supported him through his 3-year degree learning experience in university and clinical placements. Our reflections as educators are based on deconstructing and connecting concepts

Pain-Related Injustice Appraisals, Sickle Cell Stigma, and Racialized Discrimination in the Youth with Sickle Cell Disease: A Preliminary Investigation.

Despite the fact that perceptions of racialized discrimination, health-related stigma, and pain-related injustice have been associated with worse patient functioning, little is known about their unique relationships in Black youth living with sickle cell disease (SCD). In this study, we (1) examined the prevalence of perceptions of racialized discrimination, perceptions of health-related stigma, and pain-related injustice appraisals and (2) investigated how the aforementioned variables were uniquely related to functioning (i.e., functional disability, depressive, and anxiety symptoms) in Black

Predictors and outcomes of experienced and anticipated discrimination in patients treated for depression: A 2-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is both common and associated with greater depressive morbidity in depressives. Surprisingly few longitudinal studies have explored the predictors and consequences of stigma and discrimination. METHOD: A total of 230 patients with depression who were commencing treatment were enrolled. Experienced and anticipated discrimination were assessed using the Discrimination and Stigma Scale at the 1-year follow-up. The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Clinical Global Impression Scale-Severity, Social and Occupational Functioning Assessmen

Parenting Children with Down Syndrome.

This symposium includes twelve personal narratives from parents of children with Down syndrome. These narratives foster better understanding of these parents' experiences of learning that their child has Down syndrome, navigating sometimes labrynthine medical, educational, and social services bureaucracy, and contending with an implicitly-and sometimes explicitly-ableist culture. Four commentaries on these narratives are also included, authored by experts and scholars in bioethics, disability studies, health and science communication, and public advocacy. The goal of this symposium is to call

Are standing and walking overrated? Ableism in spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: This article examines how ableist assumptions may influence spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation and hinder the adjustment to life with a disability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Recognising the growing importance of lived experience insight, we integrate experiential learning, critical reflection, and engagement with academic literature to provide a reflexive account drawing on our expertise as quadriplegics and researchers. RESULTS: Ableism may influence rehabilitation, especially as internalised by people with SCI. Informed by common cultural narratives, such as the positivity myth

Visceral fat area is the measure of obesity best associated with mobility disability in community dwelling oldest-old Chinese adults.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity can be clinically defined by body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, percent body fat, or visceral fat area, it is unclear which specific measure is best associated with mobility disability in oldest-old adults. METHODS: Among 589 Chinese participants aged 85 years and older in a population-based cohort in Singapore, we measured waist circumference, computed BMI, estimated appendicular skeletal muscle mass, percent body fat, and visceral fat area using bioelectrical impedance analysis, and evaluated mobility disability using the Loco-Check questionnaire. Congress restores the Americans With Disabilities Act to its original intent.

The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) was created to prohibit discrimination based on disability. Although many individuals filed claims alleging discrimination in the workplace based on disability, the federal courts, led by the U.S. Supreme Court, adopted an increasingly constricted interpretation of key provisions of the ADA. As a result, many individuals with serious impairments were found by the courts to not be disabled. In 2008 Congress overturned these court decisions by enacting the ADA Amendments Act. These amendments overrule several decisions by the United States Supreme Court

Equality. No through road.

NHS Employers is pushing to promote equal employment opportunities for disabled people. The Disability Discrimination Act allows disabled people to follow medical careers, but progress remains patchy and varies by area. There have been calls for the General Medical Council to issue national disability guidance for medical schools.

Ableism and the discourse of risk and safety in patient-facing work-integrated learning.

In many countries, such as Canada, the USA, England, and Australia, to graduate from a regulated profession such as nursing, students must complete a set of work-integrated learning (WIL) hours and demonstrate their ability to safely perform physical skills and apply knowledge in relation to professional standards. For a disabled nursing student (DNS) undergoing training in higher education institutions (HEI), securing proper accommodations to participate effectively in WIL experiences has been difficult due to concerns related to risks to self and patient safety. This study used critical disc

Recognizing Humanity, Perceiving Ableism: Supporting Parents of Children with Down Syndrome.

This commentary reflects on twelve narratives authored by parents of children with Down syndrome. While the narratives represent a diverse set of experiences, the commentary identifies some repeated narrative aims, unified under the goal of recognition. For example, multiple authors explicitly or implicitly seek recognition of their children beyond stereotypes while others hope to make ableist values and practices more visible to clinicians and other readers. Through their rich descriptions of parenting, the authors also show themselves to be in need of support both in terms of material and bu

Logographic reading by TMR adults.

Ten moderately retarded adults learned a set of 16 logographic signs. Subjects were asked to demonstrate sentences formed from the signs using dolls and other toys. They were also asked to pick out signs and form a sentence after watching the experimenter demonstrate an event. All subjects were able to demonstrate sentences with only minor errors. Only about half were completely successful in constructing four- and five-word sentences. The method of construction of most subjects revealed a semantic--syntactic disengagement; the signs were chosen in nonsentence order, apparently in order of sal

A Prediction Model for One-Year Disability Risk Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults in China: Integrating Physical, Metabolic, and Psychosocial Factors.

BACKGROUND: Disability in older adults, characterized by progressive limitations in performing activities of daily living, poses a significant public health challenge in aging societies. Early identification of individuals at risk is critical for implementing targeted interventions to mitigate functional decline. However, existing prediction models often prioritize disease-related physiological indicators and overlook psychosocial dimensions, limiting their practicality and scalability in community-based settings. This study aimed to develop and validate a practicable prediction model for 1-ye

Latrine access and factors associated with it among people with physical disability in Kombolcha Town, Northeast Ethiopia: A mixed cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although all people have the right to access basic sanitation services, people with disabilities often face additional barriers to accessing the service compared to people without disabilities. Over the last few years, with the focus of the sustainable development goals on universal access to water supply, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, awareness of the need for programs to reach and benefit everyone has been growing. But the current level of access to latrines is not known. OBJECTIVE: To determine latrine access and identify factors associated with it among people with physi

A note on transfer of stimulus control in the delayed-cue procedure: facilitation by an overt differential response.

This case study describes initially unsuccessful attempts to use the delayed-cue procedure to teach conditional discriminations to an individual with moderate mental retardation. The task was matching printed-word comparison stimuli to dictated-name sample stimuli. In three experiments, the subject typically waited for the delayed cue unless differential responses to the dictated samples (repeating the sample names) were required. Hence, the study provides an example of a way to make the delayed-cue method more effective. The stimulus control bases for the results are discussed.

Effects of distinctive-feature training and instructional technique on letter and form discrimination.

Techniques for facilitating alphabet letter discrimination were investigated within the framework of distinctive feature and attention theory. To compare the effectiveness of three instructional procedures for emphasizing distinctive features, experimenters gave separate groups of children either distinctive-feature training, high-lighting of the features, or distinctive-feature training plus fading-in of the letter forms, along with a control, for each of three dimensions. The horizontal-slant, open-close, and straight-curve dimensions were chosen for study. Training effects were assessed by

Predicting Work Disability Related to Spinal Pain: A Systematic Review of the Most Clinically Relevant Tools.

PURPOSE: Musculoskeletal disorders, especially spinal conditions, are leading causes of disability, contributing significantly to work absenteeism and socio-economic burden. Rehabilitation is essential for promoting sustainable return to work (RTW). However, clinicians need reliable tools with appropriate psychometric properties to determine patients' risk of persistent work disability and tailor interventions. This systematic review objectives were to (1) identify clinically useful questionnaires that enable clinicians to identify individuals with spinal pain (back or neck pain) at risk of wo

Model development of a multivariable prediction model for long-term work-related neck disability among high risk occupations: A prospective cohort study.

Clinical prediction models have been identified as a research priority to identify individuals at risk of persistent musculoskeletal disability. As neck pain is a leading cause of disability among workers exposed to cumulative, repetitive and sustained force, model development in such populations is needed. This study describes the development of a clinical prediction model to predict moderate-to-severe neck disability, measured by the neck disability index (NDI≥22%) at 12-months. Sonographers working in Australia and New Zealand (n = 262) with and without neck disability completed questionnai
