A new approach for the quantitative evaluation of drawings in children with learning disabilities.

A new method for a quantitative and objective description of drawing and for the quantification of drawing ability in children with learning disabilities (LD) is hereby presented. Twenty-four normally developing children (N) (age 10.6 ± 0.5) and 18 children with learning disabilities (LD) (age 10.3 ± 2.4) took part to the study. The drawing tasks were chosen among those already used in clinical daily experience (Denver Developmental Screening Test). Some parameters were defined in order to quantitatively describe the features of the children's drawings, introducing new objective measurements b

WISC-R stability and re-evaluation of learning-disabled students.

This study investigated the temporal stability of WISC-R IQ scores for learning-disabled subjects (N = 113). All study subjects were administered the WISC-R for an initial evaluation (M age = 8 years, 3 months) and a follow-up re-evaluation (M age = 11 years, 7 months). Pearson product-moment correlations yielded coefficients that were considerably lower than those previously reported: r = .55, p less than .001 for the Verbal IQs; r = .63, p less than .001 for the Performance IQs; and r = .58, p less than .001 for the Full Scale IQs. Results of t-test analyses indicated that only the Verbal IQ

Exploring nursing students' perspectives on disability through campus accessibility evaluation: a phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Inclusive nursing education plays a crucial role in preparing future healthcare professionals to recognise and respond to the needs of persons with disabilities. Evaluating real-life environments, such as university campuses, may help students develop a deeper understanding of disability and reflect on their own attitudes and approaches to care. This study explores nursing students' lived experiences during a campus accessibility evaluation activity to understand how they perceive and interpret disability within this context. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological design was util

Evaluation of Neck Disability Using Computed-Tomography in Head and Neck Cancer Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: We have previously reported that 55% of head and neck cancer survivors have neck disability. However, it is unclear what factors contribute to their neck disability. Our study aim is to determine if survivors with neck disability have evidence of cervical spine degenerative disease assessed by computed tomography (CT). MATERIALS/METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of patient-reported neck disability, prospectively collected on survivors of squamous cell carcinomas without recurrence or metastasis over one-year post-treatment. Neck disability and its impact on daily life was measured

Upper limb disability in hemodialysis patients: evaluation of contributing factors aside from amyloidosis.

This cross-sectional case-control study evaluated upper limb muscle strength and shoulder mobility in hemodialysis (HD) patients with arteriovenous fistula or graft. Twenty-five adult patients on thrice-a-week HD treatment for 6 months at least, were selected for the study. In all the patients and control subjects, handgrip tests and tests of range of motion in the upper extremities were evaluated by physiotherapy tests. Patients on HD showed lower muscle strength than age and sex matched subjects without severe chronic kidney disease (right: 30.1 ± 11.6 vs 40.5 ± 15.1 kg, P < 0.001; left 29.1

Qualitative process evaluation of a disability-inclusive ultra-poor graduation programme in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of evidence regarding what works to help persons with disabilities escape the trap of poverty. To address extreme poverty among the general population, poverty graduation approaches have gained popularity. These programmes combine direct livelihood assistance (e.g. provision of assets) with wider support given to individuals (e.g. skill development). However, these interventions have rarely been adapted to be disability-inclusive. OBJECTIVES: The present research is a qualitative process evaluation of a disability-inclusive poverty graduation intervention, imple

Evaluating the Role of MAST1 as an Intellectual Disability Disease Gene: Identification of a Novel De Novo Variant in a Patient with Developmental Disabilities.

Intellectual disability (ID) is one of the most common developmental disorders characterized by a congenital limitation in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. More than 800 genes have been implicated so far in the pathogenesis of syndromic and non-syndromic ID conditions with the actual number is expected to be over two thousand. The advent of next-generation sequencing resulted in the identification of many novel ID genes with new genes are being reported on weekly basis. The level of evidence on ID genes varies with some of them being preliminary. MAST1 have been hinted at as bei

[Renal failure in the medicolegal evaluation of civil invalidity and social security disability (INPS)].

After a quick description of the anatomopathology and physiopathology of renal failure, the Authors delve into the problem of assessing its medicolegal aspects in the fields of civil invalidity and social security. In Italy, civil invalidity involves protecting the psychological and physical welfare of the disabled, as sanctioned by law 118 of 1971; this law protects all citizens with a debilitating condition, including those who do not work or are not of working age. A disabled person is someone who, if of working age (between 18 and retirement) has a reduction of more than ⅓ (34%) of their g

Discriminative validity of the Danish version of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI).

The Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) assesses functional status in children with disabilities aged 0.5-7.5 years. The purpose of this study was to examine if the Danish version of the PEDI was able to discriminate between nondisabled children and children with cerebral palsy (CP) or juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Convenience sampling was used to select the clinical samples that consisted of 22 children with CP and 14 children with JIA aged 1.5-7.5 years. An additional sample, consisting of 224 nondisabled children aged 1.0-5.9 years, was obtained on the basis of random
