Pediatrician's role on patients with learning disabilities: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Learning disability leads to school dropout and low self-esteem in childhood, low socioeconomic status, increased criminality, and incarceration in adulthood. Pediatricians are key professionals who can diagnose and prevent this. The objective of the study was the early detection and reference of children with learning disabilities as identified by their schoolteachers. METHODS: The protocol included: specific anamnesis with parents; Snellen test; audiometry and central auditory processing test; referral to speech therapists, ophthalmologists, otorhinolaryngologists, psychiatrists,

Determinants of Disability in Minority Populations in Spain: A Nationwide Study.

Some population groups could be especially vulnerable to the effects of population ageing. The Global Activity Limitation Indicator (GALI) has been proposed as a measure of disability, but it has not been used in minority groups. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of disability using the GALI and to analyse its determinants in immigrant and Roma populations. Data from the Spanish National Health Survey 2017 and the National Health Survey of the Roma Population 2014 were used, including adults aged 50 and above. Prevalence of disability was estimated, and odds ratios were calcu

Disability and Anxiety in Vestibular Diseases: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Patients with dizziness and vertigo usually experience psychological, physical, and social functioning limitations that may affect their daily living activities. In order to better understand disability and anxiety in patients with vertigo, in the present study we aimed to investigate the correlation between disability and anxiety in four different types of diseases causing vertigo. Moreover, the difference between the observed disabilities in these etiologies of vertigo was studied. Materials and methods In this analytic cross-sectional design, 130 patients (52 male, 78 female; a

Resilience and Function in Adults With Physical Disabilities: An Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if resilience is uniquely associated with functional outcomes (satisfaction with social roles, physical functioning, and quality of life) in individuals with physical disabilities, after controlling for measures of psychological health (depression and anxiety) and symptom severity (pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance); and to examine the potential moderating effect of sex, age, and diagnosis on the hypothesized associations between resilience and function. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey study. SETTING: Surveys were mailed (81% response rate) to a community sample of

Hyperactivity and reading disability: a longitudinal study of the nature of the association.

In order to investigate the possible causal relationships between hyperactivity and educational underachievement that might account for their frequent co-occurrence, four groups of boys, defined by the presence or absence of hyperactivity and specific reading retardation, were identified in an epidemiological study of 7 8-year-old children. They were examined in detail by means of parental interviews and psychological tests and reassessed 9 years later at the age of 16-18 years on a similar range of measures. The findings provided little support for the idea that persistent reading disabilitie

An epidemiological and aetiological study of children with intellectual disability in Taiwan.

A large-scale cytogenetic study of the causes of intellectual disability (ID) in children from special schools and institutions was made in Taiwan between 1991 and 1996. The screening methods and the identification of subjects with ID consisted of both clinical evaluation (i.e. photographs, questionnaires on family, pre-, peri- and postnatal history, and hospital records, including IQ) and further laboratory studies for diagnosis (i.e. standard chromosome analysis, and if indicated, high-resolution banding, cytogenetic fragile-X study or molecular techniques). A total of 11,892 patients were e

Reminding technology for prospective memory disability: a case study.

Congenital or acquired brain damage resulting in prospective memory loss can make a child unable to become independent of care givers. This note describes a memory aid developed for a 17 year old with spina bifida and hydrocephalus who requires continual reminding to perform health maintenance tasks such as medication and feeding. Off-the-shelf computer hardware and software were used to make a reminding system that logged task completion information. Logging is a unique feature of this system, permitting review of the user's response to reminders for health or rehabilitative purposes. The sys

The selective attention of learning-disabled children: three studies.

Three studies were performed to assess the selective attention of learning-disabled (LD) children. In the first study, 10 LD and 16 non-LD children were given the Speeded Classification task. LD children sorted cards more slowly than non-LD children, and children in both groups had trouble ignoring irrelevant information. Non-LD children became more accurate across trials, while LD children did not. In the second study, one group of 13 LD children was taught to accompany their Speeded Classification sorting verbally in an attempt to improve their performance; the other group of LD children (n

Burn morbidity: a followup study of physical and psychological disability.

Fifty-one burn patients were studied in a retrospective manner to determine the effects of the burn injury on their ability to return to their pre-burn physical and social status. The results of this study indicate that: 1) 79% of the patients were able to return to work or school, though 45% required a change in work and 25% were not able to continue with their peer groups in school; 2) the average time of disability was 6 months; 3) there was a significant psychological morbidity as demonstrated by self-confessed depression, juvenile delinquency and divorce. There is a need for awareness of

Early opioid prescription and subsequent disability among workers with back injuries: the Disability Risk Identification Study Cohort.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, population-based cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether prescription of opioids within 6 weeks of low back injury is associated with work disability at 1 year. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Factors related to early medical treatment have been little investigated as possible risk factors for development of long-term work disability among workers with back injuries. We have previously shown that about 1 of 3 of workers receive an opioid prescription early after a low back injury, and a recent study suggested that such prescriptions may increase risk for subsequent

Disability Prevalence and the Awareness-Utilization Gap for Disability Services in an Urban Community of Delhi, India: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Disability-related welfare schemes form a critical component of India's social protection architecture, yet community-level evidence on the gap between awareness and utilization in urban settings remains limited. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of disability and its socio-demographic correlates and to assess awareness and utilization of disability-related services among adults in an urban community of Delhi, generating baseline data on the awareness-utilization gap for this setting. METHOD: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Palam, an urban rese

Obstetric violence and disability overlaps: obstetric violence during child birth among womens with disabilities: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Obstetric violence is an invisible wound which is being distorting the quality of obstetric care. Obstetric Violence, which is an issue spoken and amplified currently as a type of sexual violence and is of alarming seriousness and is an evolving field of inquiry despite women's experience of institutional childbirth, has garnered unprecedented global attention in recent years. Losing on both counts: obstetric violence is a double burden among disabled women. Midlife work ability and mobility limitation in old age among non-disability and disability retirees--a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the wellbeing and mobility limitation of older disability retirees. Personal and environmental factors, such as time spent in working life, may either exacerbate or mitigate the onset of mobility limitation in general population. We aimed to study perceived midlife work ability as a determinant of self-reported mobility limitation in old age among municipal employees who transitioned into non-disability and disability retirement. METHODS: 4329 participants of the Finnish Longitudinal Study of Municipal Employees (FLAME) had retired during January 1985 and Jul

Regional patterns of disability-free life expectancy and disability-adjusted life expectancy: global Burden of Disease Study.

BACKGROUND: Information on non-fatal health outcomes of disease and injury has been largely neglected in health planning because of the conceptual and definitional complexity of measuring morbidity and disability in populations. One of our major objectives was to quantify disability for inclusion in health policy debates. We analysed these health outcomes in terms of disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) and disability-adjusted life expectancy (DALE). METHODS: Published and unpublished data were systematically reviewed to estimate the incidence, prevalence, and duration of 483 disabling sequ

A Scoping Review of Disability Assessment in Prospective and Cross-Sectional Studies That Included Device-Based Measurement of Physical Activity.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the prevalence, determinants, and health outcomes of physical activity in disabled people is limited. It is possible that the limited availability of high-quality scientific evidence is due to the extent and nature of disability assessment in physical activity research. This scoping review explores how disability has been measured in epidemiological studies that included accelerometer-based measurement of physical activity. METHODS: Data sources: MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase, PsychINFO, Health Management Information Consortium, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and CINAHL. ELIGI

Impact of fremanezumab on disability outcomes in patients with episodic and chronic migraine: a pooled analysis of phase 3 studies.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Although many preventive treatments reduce migraine frequency and severity, it is unclear whether these treatments reduce migraine-related disability in a clinically meaningful way. This pooled analysis evaluated the ability of fremanezumab to reduce migraine-related disability, based on responses and shifts in severity in patient-reported disability outcomes. METHODS: This pooled analysis included 3 double-blind phase 3 trials (HALO EM, HALO CM, FOCUS) in which patients with episodic or chronic migraine were randomly a

The relationship between headache-attributed disability and lost productivity: 2. Empirical evidence from population-based studies in nine disparate countries.

BACKGROUND: Headache disorders are disabling, with major consequences for productivity, yet the literature is silent on the relationship between headache-attributed disability and lost productivity, often erroneously regarding the two as synonymous. We evaluated the relationship empirically, having earlier found that investment in structured headache services would be cost saving, not merely cost-effective, if reductions in headache-attributed disability led to > 20% pro rata recovery of lost productivity. METHODS: We used individual participant data from Global Campaign population-based stud

The mediating effects of depressive symptoms on the association between hobby engagement and functional disability: evidence from three cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Functional disability is a critical public health challenge in aging populations. While lifestyle factors have been extensively studied, the protective role of hobby engagement against functional decline remains underexplored. Thus, this study aimed to examine the association between hobby engagement and functional disability, as well as the potential mediating effects of depressive symptoms across three large international longitudinal cohort studies. METHODS: We analyzed data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retir
