Probabilistic Health Risk and Loss of Disability-Adjusted Life Years for N-Nitrosodimethylamine in Asian Drinking Water: Assessment and Control Strategies.

N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a teratogenic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic compound, which has been detected in many daily usable items, including drinking water, food, tobacco smoke, and cosmetics. It can be formed in drinking water during the disinfection process and has been detected in numerous drinking water systems worldwide, posing significant health issues. NDMA in drinking water is linked to disinfection processes such as chloramination, chlorination, and ozonation. In this study, multipathway exposure and risk of NDMA in drinking water were analyzed for Asia using the probabilistic

Derivation of a complication burden score based on disability-adjusted life years to assess patient burden following surgery: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Comparing adverse outcomes following alternative surgical interventions is a complex process for both patients and providers. Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) are used globally as a quantitative indicator of burden of disease. However, DALYs have not been applied to the burden of postoperative complications. This study explores the feasibility and utility of DALYs in measuring the burden of postoperative complications, using 2 pediatric surgical procedures as a test model. METHODS: A literature review was undertaken of postoperative complications following pediatric inguinal

Co-infection risk assessment of Giardia and Cryptosporidium with HIV considering synergistic effects and age sensitivity using disability-adjusted life years.

Co-infection with multiple pathogens, especially the spread of Giardia and Cryptosporidium in source water among those with immunodeficiency, is common worldwide, which will result in an increase in overall risk. In this study, the quantitative microbial risk assessment model was used to estimate the cumulative risk of co-infection with Giardia and Cryptosporidium promoted by HIV, considering age sensitivity. The sensitivity of population segments with different ages was estimated by the optimization method, based on clinical data of cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis with age structure. The fac

Balancing the benefits and risks of China's national salt iodization policy over 30 years using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Both insufficient and excessive iodine intake can lead to thyroid-related disorders. Although China has made progress in eliminating iodine deficiency over the past few decades, the incidence of thyroid cancer is increasing. Currently, there is a lack of relevant research on the tradeoff between the benefits and risks of salt iodization in China. In this study, we developed a method that combines the total probability algorithm and disease burden to evaluate the appropriate amount of salt iodization. Following the principle of minimizing the comprehensive disease burden and using the metabolic

Cost Effectiveness of Childhood Cochlear Implantation and Deaf Education in Nicaragua: A Disability Adjusted Life Year Model.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation (CI) is a common intervention for severe-to-profound hearing loss in high-income countries, but is not commonly available to children in low resource environments. Owing in part to the device costs, CI has been assumed to be less economical than deaf education for low resource countries. The purpose of this study is to compare the cost effectiveness of the two interventions for children with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in a model using disability adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: Cost estimates were derived from published data,

Disability-adjusted life years associated with chronic comorbidities among people living with and without HIV: Estimating health burden in British Columbia, Canada.

Life span of people living with HIV (PLWH) has increased dramatically with the advent of modern antiretroviral therapy. As a result, comorbidities have emerged as a significant concern in this population. To describe the burden of chronic comorbidities among PLWH and HIV-negative individuals in British Columbia (BC), Canada, we estimated disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) related to these comorbidities. Based on a population-based cohort in BC, antiretroviral-treated adult PLWH and 1:4 age-sex-matched HIV-negative controls were followed for ≥1 year during 2001-2012. DALYs combined years of

Inequalities in population health loss by multiple deprivation: COVID-19 and pre-pandemic all-cause disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has caused almost unprecedented change across health, education, the economy and social interaction. It is widely understood that the existing mechanisms which shape health inequalities have resulted in COVID-19 outcomes following this same, familiar, pattern. Our aim was to estimate inequalities in the population health impact of COVID-19 in Scotland, measured by disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2020. Our secondary aim was to scale overall, and inequalities in, COVID-19 DALYs against the level of pre-pandemic inequalities in all-cause DALYs, derived from the Scot

Evaluation of fluoride exposure using disability-adjusted life years and health risk assessment in south-western Iran: A novel Monte Carlo simulation.

Consumption of fluoride-contaminated water is a worldwide concern, especially in developing countries, including Iran. However, there are restricted studies of non-single-value health risk assessment and the disease burden regarding fluoride intake nationwide. Prolonged exposure to excessive fluoride has been linked to adverse health effects such as dental and skeletal fluorosis. This can lead to under-mineralization of hard tissues, causing aesthetic concerns for teeth and changes in bone structure, increasing the risk of fractures. As such, we aimed to implement probability-based frameworks
