Evaluating the micronutrient status of women of child-bearing age living in the rural disaster areas one year after Wenchuan Earthquake.

Populations with special physiological state, such as pregnant, nursing and women of child-bearing age, have been identified as nutritionally vulnerable during natural disaster. The objective of this survey was to evaluate the prevalence of anaemia and micronutrient status of women of reproductive age in April 2009 one year after the Wenchuan Earthquake. The survey recruited 58 pregnant, 66 lactating and 242 women of child-bearing age from 19 to 45 years. The concentrations of haemoglobin in whole blood and ferritin and micronutrients in serum were assayed. Among the three groups (pregnant, nu

Mental health of nursing students regarding the Moroccan earthquake: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: In addition to the economic and social impact, mental health issues are one of health needs during natural disaster such as earthquake. Thus, surveillance for mental health variables is crucial for public health planning. Nursing students as professional students may be particularly vulnerable to adverse mental health effects after an earthquake because of their potential role in emergency response and the challenges associated with providing medical care in crisis conditions. The aim of this research was to assess the mental health of students after six months of the Moroccan earth

Are you ready? A cross-sectional survey of education, training and learning activities for peacetime crisis and armed conflict preparedness in Swedish emergency departments.

The evolving security landscape in Europe underscores the crucial importance of disaster preparedness. Emergency Departments’ (EDs) personnel – comprising nurses, nurse assistants and physicians – play a vital role in managing crises during both peacetime and armed conflicts. However, readiness and educational preparation of Emergency Department (ED) personnel are inconsistent; consequently, Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare (NBHW) has introduced national recommendations concerning education and training for both peacetime crises and armed conflicts. This study aimed to investigate

Ethical issues in infant feeding after disasters.

In the aftermath of many disasters the silence is punctuated by the crying of infants, hungry infants. The aim of this paper is to discuss ethical issues in feeding infants after disasters. The Asia Pacific region generates 25% of the world's GDP, but experiences 45% of natural disasters and 42% of the economic losses due to disasters. The region has 61% of the world's population, but 86% of the population affected by disasters. Breastfeeding, exclusive to six months and continuing thereafter, is important for growth and the health of the infant in the short term and later in life. In most nat

Meeting compliance under Medicare and Medicaid emergency preparedness Final Rule requirements.

Nursing home residents experience death and injury at a disproportionately higher rate than other populations during and after a disaster. This paper addresses the complex chronic conditions of vulnerable residents that will become even more challenging due to compounding effects from continued disasters and rapid population aging. In 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) established national emergency preparedness requirements for long-term care (LTC) and skilled nursing (SN) facilities. The problems facing nursing facilities created by an increasing population to serve,

Lessons from Fukushima: Potassium Iodide After a Nuclear Disaster.

The release of radioactive iodine after a nuclear disaster, such as those that occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan 10 years ago and Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, increases thyroid cancer risk among people who are exposed. Certain populations are especially vulnerable, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and neonates. Potassium iodide (KI) can effectively block radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid gland if taken immediately after a radiation release. This article examines lessons learned from Fukushima to enhance disaste

Development and Validation of Statements on Nursing Digital Capabilities for Climate-Resilient Healthcare Systems.

Building on our previous research on nurses' adoption and use of digital technology during the COVID-19 pandemic and guided by the Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management framework, we initiated a study to develop recommendations for including nursing digital capabilities for public health emergency preparedness (PHEP). While this study comprises three phases: 1) Identifying framework elements through case studies and a scoping review; 2) Conducting two e-Delphi survey rounds followed by an expert consensus meeting; and 3) Framework implementtaion, this paper reports on the development a

[Debriefing of hospital professional staff after fire in a bar in Volendam].

A fire disaster in a bar on New Year's Eve 2001 in Volendam, which led to 200 victims, resulted in active participation of regional hospitals, including the academic hospital of the Free University of Amsterdam. In the first hour, more than 100 members of personnel were mobilised in this hospital. Nine doctors and nurses worked as members of medical teams at the site of the disaster; the others triaged 16 patients in the emergency room and treated 13 patients in the intensive care unit. After 4.5 hours, the influx of victims stopped and accordingly the disaster plan was deactivated. During the

Training nurses in an international emergency medical team using a serious role-playing game: a retrospective comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although game-based applications have been used in disaster medicine education, no serious computer games have been designed specifically for training these nurses in an IEMT setting. To address this need, we developed a serious computer game called the IEMTtraining game. In this game, players assume the roles of IEMT nurses, assess patient injuries in a virtual environment, and provide suitable treatment options. METHODS: The design of this study is a retrospective comparative analysis. The research was conducted with 209 nurses in a hospital. The data collection process of this

Exploring the impacts of perceived locus of control on post-traumatic stress disorder among disaster survivors: A systematic review.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: It was previously reported that perceived external locus of control may exacerbate depressive symptoms, is associated with anxiety, boosts stress and general mental distress and weakens resilience against traumatic situations or difficulties. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Those with a higher external locus of control are more prone to develop PTSD symptoms since the perceived external locus of control is among the predictors of PTSD. An internal locus of control is considered important in preventing PTSD, although an external locus of co
