Despite the considerable progress of medicine, parasitic diseases still pose a great threat to human health and life. Among parasitic diseases, those transmitted by vectors, mainly arthropods, play a particular role. These diseases occur most frequently in the poorest countries and affect a vast part of the human population. They include malaria, babesiosis, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis and filariasis. This study presents those vector-transmitted diseases that are responsible for the greatest incidence and mortality of people on a global scale. Attention is focused primarily on diseases tran

Conventional methodologies to control vector borne diseases with chemical pesticides are often associated with environmental toxicity, adverse effects on human health and the emergence of insect resistance. In the paratransgenic strategy, symbiotic or commensal microbes of host insects are transformed to express gene products that interfere with pathogen transmission. These genetically altered microbes are re-introduced back to the insect where expression of the engineered molecules decreases the host's ability to transmit the pathogen. We have successfully utilized this strategy to reduce car

The canine vector-borne infectious diseases (CVBDs) are an emerging problem in veterinary medicine and the zoonotic potential of many of these agents is a significant consideration for human health. The successful diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these infections is dependent upon firm understanding of the underlying immunopathology of the diseases in which there are unique tripartite interactions between the microorganism, the vector and the host immune system. Although significant advances have been made in the areas of molecular speciation and the epidemiology of these infections and

From epidemiological point of view, Indonesia is an extremely interesting area owing its insular structure and ecological, anthropological, cultural and economical diversity. As everywhere, vector-borne diseases are the result of complex and variable epidemiological systems, subject both to biogeographical rules and human activity. Two main arboviroses are present in Indonesia: dengue and Japanese encephalitis. Dengue appears as an endemoepidemic disease and is mostly circumscribed to urban areas. Haemorrhagic cases were first observed in 1968; since then, the incidence has been constantly inc

Over the last four decades, a number of arthropod-borne infections have been recognized for the first time. Some have become of considerable public health importance, such as dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), and others are spreading geographically and their incidence is increasing. There has been an important recrudescence of several long-known vector-borne diseases. Malaria, leishmaniasis, dengue, and plague have resurged in numerous foci, in some cases where they were thought to be under effective control. In most instances, the appearance of new diseases and syndromes and the resurgence of o

We analyzed how deforestation affects triatomine presence and distribution in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, from 2007 to 2019. Using land change data from MapBiomas (1985-2022), we assessed land cover shifts, including forest, deforestation, and urbanization, and their impact on Trypanosoma cruzi vectors. Urban growth has largely replaced mixed-use and forest areas, bringing some populations closer to remnants of the forest and increasing triatomine presence indoors. We documented 1,518 triatomine records, with ~ 50% testing positive for T. cruzi. Statistical models showed that deforestation and th

The proven ability of vector mosquitoes to adapt to various strategies developed to control them has enabled mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and lymphatic filariasis to remain entrenched as public health threats all over the world. Rather than continuing to seek a miracle cure for all mosquito vector problems among the ranks of single mode-of-action chemical pesticides, today's developers of vector control strategies are increasingly turning to more integrated, varied techniques, relying on pheromones and other semiochemicals to effect vector control through behavioral manipul

Prion diseases are rare neurodegenerative diseases of humans and animals with a lethal evolution. Animal prion infections, such as chronic wasting disease (CWD) and scrapie (sheep) have shown a pattern of horizontal transmission. CWD is an endemic disease that has been affecting thousands of domestic and wild cervids in US for the last three decades. The mode of contamination is not known, although direct contact between infected and non-infected animals via saliva, urine and feces have been considered. Increasing spread of CWD has raised concerns about the potential transmission to humans and

Two examples of area-wide programmes, employing the sterile insect technique (SIT), which have eradicated a parasite and a disease vector common to domestic and wild animals are described. New World screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax, caused significant morbidity and mortality of livestock and wild mammals in tropical and subtropical areas of America before eradication was achieved in North America using the SIT and other components of an integrated pest management (IPM) programme. Movement of wild as well as domestic animals from an area which is infested with screwworm to a free area r

Achieving global health security is challenged by arthropod vectors, which transmit a wide range of vector-borne human and animal diseases. Although the safe, selective, and responsible use of insecticides continues to play a crucial role in vector management, their long-term effectiveness is increasingly threatened by the widespread emergence of insecticide resistance. Resistance evolves through natural selection acting on pre-existing genetic heritable variation in vector populations under insecticide selective pressure. In addition, exposure to insecticides induces genetic/metabolic changes

The ecology of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) is an important system of great complexity, which involves the knowledge about the pathogens and animal species entailed in maintaining transmission cycles in a given locality, including those that act as vectors and reservoirs for the transmitted pathogens. To understand the ecology of some VBDs, we studied vectors, reservoirs, and pathogens of different VBDs, including dengue, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, malaria, Zika, and chikungunya in the municipality of La Mesa, Cundinamarca, Colombia, a locality close to the capital, Bogotá. Vectors and mam

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) represent a significant public health challenge. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective disease management and control, with host-encoded microRNAs (miRNAs) emerging as promising disease biomarkers. This systematic review surveys research conducted on miRNA responses in disease vectors and human hosts of VBDs. A systematic search of four databases and manual searching identified 93 qualifying articles. Numerous VBDs were described, with the most common focus on dengue (21%; n = 15) and Chagas disease (11%; n = 8). Twenty-eight in vivo human studies h

Triatoma vitticeps is a Chagas disease vector that was found infected with Trypanosoma cruzi in homes. As this species is endemic from Brazil (Bahia, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro) and no study comparing the specimens from different Brazilian states was conducted, we analyzed the genetic distance (16S rDNA, Cyt b, and COI mitochondrial genes) and the chromosomal characteristics for T. vitticeps from Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and Espírito Santo. All specimens showed the same cytogenetic characteristics. On the other hand, the different mitochondrial genes demonstrated hig

OBJECTIVES: Hematophagous terrestrial leeches are common in rainforest habitats and widely regarded as pests. Despite limited research, circumstantial evidence raises the possibility that, beyond being an annoyance, terrestrial leeches could potentially transmit diseases.
METHODS: We explored this possibility using multiple approaches. First, we reviewed published literature to synthesize knowledge related to disease transmission by leeches. Second, we collected terrestrial leeches (genus Haemadipsa) from human-occupied rainforests in Peninsular Malaysia and applied metagenomic methods for vi

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is an avian pathogen with an unsegmented negative-strand RNA genome that belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family. While primarily pathogenic in birds, NDV presents no threat to human health, rendering it a safe candidate for various biomedical applications. Extensive research has highlighted the potential of NDV as a vector for vaccine development and gene therapy, owing to its transcriptional modularity, low recombination rate, and lack of a DNA phase during replication. Furthermore, NDV exhibits oncolytic capabilities, efficiently eliciting antitumor immune respon
