The conservative mixing behavior of dissolved organic matter: Assessment of size distributions and optical properties.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous and influences pollutant transport, photochemistry, and water treatment. As a heterogeneous mixture, current theories suggest that DOM forms supramolecular assemblies; yet, common statistical methods assume the principles of additivity and conservative mixing. This study evaluates whether mixtures of DOM sources follow conservative mixing principles as measured by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled with organic carbon, absorbance, and fluorescence detectors. Blends of DOM isolates and wastewater effluent were evaluated using one-, two-, and

Differential absorbance spectroscopy of mercury-induced changes in dissolved organic matter: Influence of DOM aromaticity.

Mercury addition to dissolved organic matter (DOM) can induce changes in its optical properties that may be detected using differential absorbance spectra (DAS). This study evaluated the influence of DOM aromaticity on mercury-induced DAS responses using acetic acid, l-tyrosine, and tannic acid as model compounds representing different molecular and chromophoric characteristics, together with peat water and upland river water as contrasting natural-water matrices. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra were recorded from 200 to 800 nm, with characteristic DAS responses observed at Δ229, Δ222, an

[Analysis the Source and Spatiotemporal Variation of Dissolved Organic Matter in the Chaohe River Watershed].

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widespread in aquatic environments and plays a crucial role in various biogeochemistry processes. Urbanization and anthropogenic activities have significantly altered the source and characteristics of DOM in rivers. Therefore, analyzing the spatial and temporal variation of DOM on a watershed scale to trace its source for effective water quality management is important. In this study, the composition characteristics of DOM in the Chaohe River watershed, which is the source of drinking water in northern China, were analyzed using the EEM-PARAFAC method. Further

Variable toxicity of inorganic mercury compounds to Artemia elicited by coexposure with dissolved organic matter.

The chemical behavior of mercury (Hg) and its interactions with naturally occurring ligands shape its environmental fate and impact. The neurotoxic properties of Hg are widely known and studied both in vitro and in vivo. However, there continues to be limited information on the influence of chelation with large organic ligands on the toxicity to marine macro-organisms. This work examined the effect of Hg complexed with various types of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the mortality and hatching success of Artemia sp. nauplii under varying marine media conditions. The results confirmed both, a

Dark transformation from 17β-estradiol to estrone initiated by hydroxyl radical in dissolved organic matter.

The occurrence and fate of 17β-estradiol (E2) in natural water have gained extensive attention owing to its high ecotoxic risk to wildlife. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a ubiquitous water constituent and contributes significantly to E2 removal, although the reaction mechanism is rarely clarified. The present study aims to investigate E2 transformation in water containing fresh or aged DOM surrogates at environmentally relevant concentrations in the dark. Experiments along with radical probes of benzene and furfuryl alcohol reveal that reactive radicals, particularly hydroxyl radical (·OH)

Characterization of Dissolved Organic Matter from Agricultural and Livestock Effluents: Implications for Water Quality Monitoring.

There is growing concern about the impact of agricultural practices on water quality. The loss of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous through agricultural runoff poses a potential risk of water quality degradation. However, it is unclear how dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition is associated with pollution levels in water bodies. To address this, we conducted a cross-year investigation to reveal the nature of DOM and its relationship to water quality in agricultural effluents (AEs) and livestock effluents (LEs). We discovered that DOM fluorescence components of AEs were mainly fro

Accelerating the humification mechanism of dissolved organic matter using biochar during vermicomposting of dewatered sludge.

The use of biochar can accelerate the vermicomposting process of dewatered sludge. However, the underlying mechanism of vermicompost maturity with biochar is still unclear. This study investigated the effect of biochar on sludge maturation during vermicomposting by analyzing the spectroscopic characteristics of dissolved organic matter. For this, dewatered sludge mixed with and without 5 % biochar were separately vermicomposted. The results showed that the biochar could significantly increase the biomass of earthworms as well as the activity and abundances of bacteria and eukaryotes (P < 0.05)

Decreasing diversity of rare bacterial subcommunities relates to dissolved organic matter along permafrost thawing gradients.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from permafrost thaw greatly influences the biogeochemical cycles of, among others, downstream carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles; yet, knowledge of the linkages between bacterial communities with permafrost DOM heterogeneity is limited. Here, we aim at unravelling the responses of bacterial diversities and metabolic profiles to DOM quantity and composition across permafrost thawing gradients by coupling an extensive field investigation with bio-incubation experiments. Richness, evenness and dissimilarities of the whole and rare communities decreased

Photodegradation of river dissolved organic matter and trace metals in the largest European Arctic estuary.

Photo-induced degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and organo-mineral colloids is one of the major factor responsible for transformation of DOM and dissolved metals in boreal and subarctic waters. In contrast to fairly good understanding of this process in inland waters of high latitude zone, the transformation of riverine DOM and associated trace element (TE) colloids in the Arctic estuaries remains virtually unknown. We incubated, under sunlight in outdoor pools, quartz reactors filled with mixtures of sterile filtered riverine and estuarine water. The water samples were collected i

Effects of Sulfide Concentration and Dissolved Organic Matter Characteristics on the Structure of Nanocolloidal Metacinnabar.

Understanding the speciation of divalent mercury (Hg(II)) in aquatic systems containing dissolved organic matter (DOM) and sulfide is necessary to predict the conversion of Hg(II) to bioavailable methylmercury. We used X-ray absorption spectroscopy to characterize the structural order of mercury in Hg(II)-DOM-sulfide systems for a range of sulfide concentration (1-100 μM), DOM aromaticity (specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA254)), and Hg(II)-DOM and Hg(II)-DOM-sulfide equilibration times (4-142 h). In all systems, Hg(II) was present as structurally disordered nanocolloidal metacinnabar (β-Hg

Mercury isotope fractionation during aqueous photoreduction of monomethylmercury in the presence of dissolved organic matter.

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a toxic pollutant that bioaccumulates in aquatic food webs. A major mechanism that limits MMHg uptake by biota is photodemethylation in surface waters. Recently, the extent of mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of Hg isotopes preserved in fish is being used to quantify this MMHg sink. Here, the effects of different types and amounts of DOM on Hg MIF during MMHg photodemethylation were investigated to assess how variable MIF enrichment factors may be with respect to changing DOM binding sites. From experiments conducted with varying amounts of reduced organic sulfu

Identifying the sources and fate of anthropogenically impacted dissolved organic matter (DOM) in urbanized rivers.

Anthropogenic activities have dramatically changed the loads and compositions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in urbanized streams. In this study, the spatial and temporal variations of DOM in the anthropogenically impacted Zhujiang River were investigated by analyzing the water samples in an upstream, urbanized area and downstream of the rivers on different days of one year. The results indicated that the levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total phosphorus (TP) were unaffected by seasonal changes, but the specific UV254 absorbance (SUVA) values and the total nitrogen (TN) content

Export of dissolved organic matter in relation to land use along a European climatic gradient.

The terrestrial export of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is associated with climate, vegetation and land use, and thus is under the influence of climatic variability and human interference with terrestrial ecosystems, their soils and hydrological cycles. We present a data-set including catchments from four areas covering the major climate and land use gradients within Europe: a forested boreal zone (Finland), a temperate agricultural area (Denmark), a wet and temperate mountain region in Wales, and a warm Mediterranean catchment draining into the Gulf of Lyon. In all study areas, DOC (dissolve

Soil dissolved organic matter dynamics under dryland restoration: disentangling land use, vegetation, and management controls.

INTRODUCTION: Dryland soils are highly sensitive to land use change and restoration, yet the relative influence of land use and associated vegetation and management conditions on soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) remains poorly understood. METHODS: This study evaluated DOM quantity and quality across five land use types (cropland, orchard, grassland, shrubland and forestland) and the additional differences associated with vegetation and management within specific land use systems. Soils were sampled from sixteen sites and three depths (0-20, 30-50, and 60-80 cm), including naturally restore

Chlorination amplifies source-dependent photochemical divergence between microplastic-derived and fulvic-acid dissolved organic matter.

Chlorination is widely applied before the discharge of wastewater effluent into receiving waters, yet the distinct response of artificial and non-plastic dissolved organic matter (DOM) to chlorination remains unclear. Here, fulvic-acid (FA), expanded polystyrene-derived DOM (EPS-DOM) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)-derived DOM (PBAT-DOM) were compared to determine how chlorination-induced optical and molecular transformations regulate sulfamethazine (SMT) photodegradation. Chlorination caused pronounced source-dependent DOM restructuring. The E2/E3 ratio increased from 4.60 to 42.9

Evaluation of extraction solvents for untargeted metabolomics in characterizing Antarctic cryoconite hole dissolved organic matter.

BACKGROUND: Cryoconite holes, a dynamic habitat in Antarctica and other glaciers, are glacial biological hotspots with high biogeochemical turnover rates, significantly influencing carbon and nitrogen cycling within climate-sensitive glacial ecosystems. They are found on glaciers worldwide, highlighting their global importance, and are likely to become more widespread as glaciers continue to retreat. Despite their global occurrence and sensitivity to climate warming, untargeted metabolomic studies of their dissolved organic matter (DOM) remain scarce, largely due to very low biomass, harsh sam

Dissolved organic matter composition influences catalytic oxidation behavior and product evolution in real water matrices.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) strongly influences catalytic oxidation processes through complex matrix effects. Despite the widely recognized matrix effects of DOM, the relationships between DOM composition, product evolution, and transformation preference during catalytic oxidation remain poorly understood. In this study, nine water matrices with distinct DOM compositional characteristics were investigated to distinguish the effects of DOM composition from organic loading under TOC-normalized conditions during photocatalytic periodate activation. Results showed that DOM induced both promotiv

Mechanistic Insights into Mercury Photoreduction: Effects of Dissolved Organic Matter and Inorganic Carbon in Seawater.

Atmospheric mercury (Hg) is primarily derived from marine evasion of Hg(0) produced through the photoreduction of Hg(II) in seawater. Although the mechanisms of Hg(II) photoreduction in seawater have been extensively investigated, the coupled effects of dissolved inorganic carbon and specific dissolved organic matter (DOM) structures remain unresolved. Here, we report the pseudo-first-order rate constants (kr) for the gross photoreduction of Hg(II) in the presence of thiols in deionized water (DIW), phosphate buffer solution (PBS), and artificial seawater (ASW) under UV-A irradiation. For alip
