Prevalence and clinical features of colonic diverticulosis in a Middle Eastern population.

AIM: To determine the prevalence, location, associations and clinical features of colonic-diverticulosis and its role as a cause of lower-gastroenterology-bleeding. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 3649 consecutive patients who underwent a colonoscopy for all indications between 2007 and 2011 at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The demographic data were collected retrospectively through the hospital's information system, electronic file system, endoscopic e-reports, and manual review of the files by two research assistants. The demographic info

The nature of inflammatory bowel disease in patients with coexistent colonic diverticulosis.

GOALS/BACKGROUND: Reports of segmental colitis with diverticula regard this entity as a local disease. Our goal was to reexamine the association of diverticula to colitis and question the relationship of colonic diverticulosis with generalized inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). STUDY: A retrospective database review of more than 1,600 patients matched 100 cases with IBD and colonic diverticulosis with a control group of 100 patients with IBD without diverticulosis. Patients were matched by gender, IBD diagnosis, and date of birth. Variables examined included disease distribution, strictures, f

[Postoperative morbidity and mortality of infectious complications of colonic diverticulosis: multifactorial study].

The objective of this study was to determine parameters influencing the mortality due to postoperative adverse events, by taking into account surgical techniques and many other perioperative parameters. From 1967 to 1989, 83 patients were operated for pericolic abscess (level 1, n = 22), pelvic abscess (level 2, n = 38) purulent peritonitis (level 3, n = 16) and fecal peritonitis (level 4, n = 7). Surgical techniques were: first colostomy with drainage (n = 21), first resection without immediate anastomosis (n = 34), and first resection with immediate anastomosis (n = 28). The overall complica

When Diverticulosis Crosses Boundaries: A Case of Appendiceal Involvement in Colonic Diverticular Disease.

Appendiceal diverticulosis is a rare entity that often mimics acute appendicitis and is typically diagnosed postoperatively. It carries a higher risk of perforation and mortality compared to simple appendicitis, making recognition clinically important. We report a case of a 55-year-old male presenting with a 2-week history of intermittent right iliac fossa pain with acute exacerbation. Imaging demonstrated a distended, thick-walled appendix without clear signs of acute inflammation. The patient underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy for suspected chronic appendicitis. Intraoperative findings sh

Italian guidelines for the diagnosis and management of colonic diverticulosis and diverticular disease.

Colonic diverticulosis and diverticular disease are among the most common gastrointestinal disorders encountered in clinical practice. These Italian guidelines focus on the diagnosis and management of diverticulosis and diverticular disease in the adult population, providing practical and evidence-based recommendations for clinicians. Experts from five Italian scientific societies, constituting a multidisciplinary panel, conducted a comprehensive review of meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials, and observational studies to formulate 14 PICO questions. The assessment o

High-Resolution Colonic Manometry Pressure Profiles Are Similar in Asymptomatic Diverticulosis and Controls.

BACKGROUND: Elevated colonic pressures and increased colonic activity have been thought to contribute to the pathophysiology of diverticulosis. However, evidence for this has been limited to low-resolution manometry, which is of limited accuracy. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the contraction pressures, counts, and distance of propagation recorded by high-resolution colonic manometry in diverticulosis vs control patients. METHODS: High-resolution colonic manometry was used to record descending and sigmoid colon activity pre- and post-meal in patients with established, asymptomatic divert

Colonic Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis in Renal Transplant Recipients: Management and Long-Term Outcomes.

Data regarding management of colonic diverticulitis in renal transplant recipients (RTRs) are limited. This study aims to identify prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes in RTRs with colonic diverticulosis and diverticulitis. Between January 2004 and December 2013, all patients who underwent kidney transplantation were analyzed. Among all RTSs, patients who had a pretransplant colonoscopic diagnosis of diverticulosis and patients with a proven attack of diverticulitis were included in our analysis. There were 1578 RTRs with a mean age of 50 ± 14 years at the time of transplantation. Of these,

Long pedunculated colonic polyp with diverticulosis: case report and review of the literature.

Colonic muco-submucosal elongated polyp is a rare entity (0.39% in an endoscopic polypectomy series). It is an elongated drumstick-shaped lesion characterized by oedematous, loose connective tissue with a dense submucosal layer showing dilation of blood and lymphatic vessels. First described as a polypoid lesion associated with diverticular disease of the sigmoid colon, it was histologically characterized as a separate entity by Kelly in 1991. In that study, the author reported eight cases in which a red or brown mucosal protrusion or polyp were associated with diverticular disease, and descri

The emergence of colonic diverticulosis in urbanised Indians. A report of 23 cases.

Of a total of 969 barium enemas performed over a three year period, 23 (2.4%) showed colonic diverticulosis. The mean age of the patients was 58 years and the commonest site involved was the sigmoid colon. All the patients were urbanised and were obligatory vegetarians. Six (25%) of the patients had a complication of the disease and three of them required surgery. The possible relationship of the disease with socio-economic changes is highlighted.

Prior abdominal surgery as a potential risk factor for colonic diverticulosis or diverticulitis.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal colonic pressure profiles have been associated with an increased risk of colonic diverticulosis. A surgical history is a known risk factor for abdominal adhesions and these may lead to increased intraluminal colonic pressure. AIM: To assess whether previous abdominal surgery is associated with colonic diverticulosis or diverticulitis. METHODS: We analyzed data from a study of patients undergoing colonoscopy for different indications from 2020 through 2021. Patients completed a structured questionnaire concerning previous abdominal surgeries, dietary and lifestyle exposur

Streptococcus bovis meningitis associated with colonic diverticulosis and hearing impairment: a case report.

A 75-year-old woman presented to the Tropical Diseases Hospital, Goiania, Brazil, with a two-day history of fever and chills followed by headache and vomiting over the last 24 hours. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed 270 leukocytes/mmc (30 percent neutrophils); 20 red cells/mmc; undetectable levels of glucose and 232 mg/dL of protein. The Gram stain revealed several Gram-positive cocci, and CSF culture yielded Streptococcus bovis. A colonoscopy showed diverticula in descendent and transverse colon. After a 14-day course of penicillin G, the patient was discharged in a good state of health,

Colonic diverticulosis as a risk factor for peritonitis in Chinese peritoneal dialysis patients.

OBJECTIVES: The risk of development of enteric peritonitis in Chinese peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with colonic diverticulosis is not known. There have been no reports on whether colonic diverticulosis may affect peritonitis outcomes. The objectives of this study were to examine whether colonic diverticulosis is a risk factor for the development of enteric peritonitis and to study its influence on the outcome of enteric peritonitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All continuous ambulatory PD patients that had barium enema and colonoscopic examinations performed between January 1994 and January 20

Serotonin Metabolism and Serotonin Receptors Expression Are Altered in Colon Diverticulosis.

Background and Objectives: Diverticulosis is frequently accompanied by altered bowel habits. The biogenic amines within colonic mucosa control bowel motility, and in particular, alterations in serotonin signaling may play a role in colon diverticulosis. The aim of the study was to assess the concentration of biogenic amines and serotonin receptor expression in the colonic mucosa in patients with diverticulosis and healthy controls. Materials and Methods: This prospective, comparative study included 59 individuals: 35 with sigmoid diverticulosis and 24 healthy controls. The study was held at th

Novel patch biomaterial treatment for colon diverticulosis in swine model.

Current leading managements for diverticular disease cannot prevent the recurrence of diverticulitis, bleeding and/or other complications. There is an immediate need for developing new minimal invasive therapeutic strategies to prevent and treat this disease. Through a biomechanical analysis of porcine colon with diverticular lesions, we proposed a novel adhesive patch concept aiming at mechanical reconstruction of the diseased colon wall. This study aims to evaluate the surgical feasibility (safety and efficacy) of pulmonary visceral pleura (PVP) patch therapy using a pig model of diverticulo
