Giant Colonic Diverticulum: A Rare Type of Diverticular Disease.

Giant colonic diverticulum (GCD) is a well-recognized but infrequently encountered disease in clinical practice. GCD is its own unique entity and differs from commonly seen diverticular disease in both size and management. Initial clinical presentation is typically associated with diverticulitis and symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, rectal bleeding, or even a palpable abdominal mass. Surgery is the recommended treatment option largely due to the risk of associated complications including colonic perforation. We describe the case of a 56-year-old female diagnosed with a

Complicated giant colonic diverticulum: imaging-based diagnosis.

A 66-year-old male from Venezuela with history of high blood pressure and diverticulosis is being studied on an outpatient basis for abdominal pain and weight loss of several months of evolution. He presented to the emergency department due to worsening abdominal pain in the last 48 hours and fever. His abdomen was mildly tender to palpation in the left hypochondrium but did not exhibit signs of peritonitis. An abdominal x-ray was performed, revealing an oval, smooth-walled mass located in the left upper quadrant that contained a gas-fluid level. An outpatient abdominal CT scan performed two m

Intussusception caused by an inverted colonic diverticulum: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception is an unusual disorder among the complications of diverticula in adults. This study aimed to report intussusception due to an inverted colonic diverticulum. Such a large inverted colonic diverticulum has rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old Chinese woman presented to the First Hospital of Jilin University with abdominal pain, vomiting, and bloody stool. Preoperative computed tomography imaging indicated intussusception. The intraoperative diagnosis was consistent with postoperative pathology. Our patient was diagnosed as having an inverted colonic

Giant colonic diverticulum-a rare cause of acute abdomen.

Giant colonic diverticulum (GCD), defined as diverticulum larger than 4 cm, is a rare entity. It is generally a manifestation of colonic diverticular disease and can have dramatic complications such as perforation, abscess, volvulus, infarction and adenocarcinoma. This report documents the case of a 63-year-old man coming to the Emergency Department with acute abdomen due to a perforation of a GCD. In the plain abdominal X-ray the 'Balloon-sign' was revealed, computed tomography scan and Hartmann's procedure were performed. Acute abdomen can occur as a manifestation of a complication of a GCD,

Possible Contribution of a Diverticulum to the Development and Rupture of Colonic Lymphangioma.

A 55-year-old Japanese man with a history of diverticulitis underwent colonoscopy for careful evaluation of progressive anemia. A 5-mm depressed lesion oozing spontaneously was observed at the hepatic flexure. On suspicion of depressed-type of cancer, right-sided hemicolectomy was performed. Histopathological examination indicated a collapsed lymphangioma exactly over a diverticulum, which had previously been complicated diverticulitis. The colonic mucosa and lymphangioma prolapsed beyond the subserosal layer via the muscularis propria defect, resulting in a depressed lesion and mucosal lacera

Gastric adenocarcinoma of Meckel's diverticulum as a cause of colonic obstruction.

A 45-year-old-female patient with no prior surgical history presented with bowel obstruction. At laparotomy, a bulky tumor arising from the ileum, which completely obstructed the sigmoid colon, was found. A left hemicolectomy followed by a transverse colostomy and a Hartman's pouch were performed. Pathological examination of the specimen revealed gastric adenocarcinoma arising from a Meckel's diverticulum in the ileum. Malignant transformation from a Meckel's diverticulum is an uncommon occurrence. This case illustrates that successful management of a symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum, even wi

Giant colonic diverticulum: a rare manifestation of a common disease.

Giant colonic diverticulum is a rare manifestation of a common disease primarily affecting patients over the age of 50 years. We reviewed all 81 cases of giant colonic diverticulum reported in the medical literature and present herein an additional case in a younger patient. Published reports were summarized with regard to current epidemiology, clinical aspects, diagnosis, pathogenesis, treatment, and complications. Giant colonic diverticulum can present as an acute, chronic, or incidental condition, or with complications. There are several suggested theories for the pathogenesis of giant colo

Giant colonic diverticulum: an unusual manifestation of a common disease.

Giant colonic diverticula are an uncommon manifestation of colonic diverticular disease. This report documents another case of this rare entity. The clinical presentation is variable, but abdominal pain and the presence of an abdominal mass are common. Their etiology is uncertain, but they are thought to originate from pulsion diverticula. Abdominal plain films and barium enema are helpful in making the diagnosis. Computerized tomography is useful when the diagnosis is unclear. Surgical resection is recommended to alleviate symptoms and avoid complications.

[A Case of Ascending Colon Cancer Probably Arising from a Diverticulum].

A 70's male was admitted to our hospital with complaints of anorexia and abdominal pain. CT showed thickening of the ascending colon. Colonoscopy revealed multiple diverticula of the ascending colon, but no tumor on the mucosa. The patient was diagnosed as a case of diverticulitis of the ascending colon and was advised laparoscopic ileocecal resection. The resected specimen showed wall thickening; however, no remarkable findings were observed, with the exception of multiple diverticula on the mucosal surface. Histological examination showed well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma extending

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumour arising in Meckel's diverticulum coexisting with colon adenocarcinoma.

Although colon cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide, the prevalence of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (GEP-NETs) remains rare. To date, very few cases of GEP-NETs within Meckel's diverticulum and synchronous colorectal cancer have been reported. Although the coexistence of these two tumour types is uncommon, it is important to be aware of their disease patterns. We present a rare case of a patient with an intestinal GEP-NET arising in Meckel's diverticulum coexisting with metastatic colon adenocarcinoma, and we discuss the clinical manifestatio

Perforated diverticulum of the ascending colon: pre-operative diagnosis by ultrasound.

A case of acute perforation of a diverticulum of the ascending colon is presented. The ultrasound features that helped in making a pre-operative diagnosis are discussed. This rare surgical emergency and the similar clinical entities of perforated caecal or transverse colon diverticula are often clinically misdiagnosed as more common conditions such as acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis or perforated ulcer. Awareness of this entity will help radiologists in making a correct pre-operative diagnosis.

Retroperitoneal perforation of a duodenal diverticulum with colonic necrosis -- report of a case.

Primary duodenal diverticula are usually asymptomatic. About 115 perforations have been reported, but none with right colon necrosis. We report a 45-year-old woman, with a five days history of high fever along with epigastric and periumbilical pain. Physical examination revealed right upper and lower quadrant tenderness with peritoneal signs. White blood cell count was 11 500/mm (3) while biochemical and hepatic biology tests were normal. Abdominal radiographs showed no pathologic findings. Ultrasound disclosed fluid in the lower pelvis. Computerized tomography revealed fluid collection in the
