Overexpression of serum response factor restores ocular dominance plasticity in a model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Neuronal plasticity deficits underlie many of the neurobehavioral problems seen in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Recently, we showed that third trimester alcohol exposure leads to a persistent disruption in ocular dominance (OD) plasticity. For instance, a few days of monocular deprivation results in a robust reduction of cortical regions responsive to the deprived eye in normal animals, but not in ferrets exposed early to alcohol. This plasticity deficit can be reversed if alcohol-exposed animals are treated with a phosphodiesterase type 1 (PDE1) inhibitor during the period of mono

Reemergence of ocular dominance plasticity during recovery from the effects of propranolol infused in kitten visual cortex.

We wanted to know whether ocular dominance plasticity can increase under the condition in which the number of available beta adrenoreceptors is expected to increase within kitten visual cortex. We adopted a paradigm in which monocular lid suture was carried out some time after the termination of direct infusion of the cortex with a beta adrenoreceptor antagonist. A significant change in ocular dominance was obtained as shown by a decrease in binocular cortical neurons, when time interval between the end of the d,l-propranolol infusion and the start of monocular deprivation was one week. With a

The influence of ocular sighting dominance on Fundus torsion in patients with unilateral congenital superior oblique palsy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of our study was to determine whether ocular sighting dominance may influence the ocular torsion in patients with unilateral congenital superior oblique palsy (UCSOP). METHODS: This retrospective study included 22 UCSOP patients with radiologic evidence of unilateral superior oblique muscle hypoplasia on orbital magnetic resonance imaging and 66 healthy individuals with normal ocular motility as controls. Ocular torsion was assessed both quantitatively and qualitatively using digital fundus photography. The disc-fovea angle (DFA) was measured quantitatively using image so

Equalization of ocular dominance columns induced by an activity-dependent learning rule and the maturation of inhibition.

Early in development, the cat primary visual cortex (V1) is dominated by inputs driven by the contralateral eye. The pattern then reorganizes into ocular dominance columns that are roughly equally distributed between inputs serving the two eyes. This reorganization does not occur if the eyes are kept closed. The mechanism of this equalization is unknown. It has been argued that it is unlikely to involve Hebbian activity-dependent learning rules, on the assumption that these would favor an initially dominant eye. The reorganization occurs at the onset of the critical period (CP) for monocular d

Pattern of ocular dominance columns and cytochrome oxidase activity in a macaque monkey with naturally occurring anisometropic amblyopia.

Unilateral eyelid suture, a model for amblyopia induced by congenital cataract, produces shrinkage of the deprived eye's ocular dominance columns in the striate cortex. Loss of geniculocortical projections are thought to account for the poor vision in the amblyopic eye. It is uncertain whether ocular dominance columns become shrunken in other forms of amblyopia. We examined the striate cortex in a pigtailed macaque with natural anisometropia discovered at age 5 months. Amblyopia in the left eye was documented at 1 year by behavioral testing. At age 6 years, the left eye was injected with [3H]p

Determinants of Pentacam-derived lens density in age-related cataract: the role of ocular dominance and lifestyle factors.

BACKGROUND: Pentacam-derived lens density provides an objective measure of lens opacity in cataract. However, the roles of ocular dominance and lifestyle-related factors in lens density variation remain unclear. This study investigated the association of ocular dominance and lifestyle factors with lens density in patients with age-related cataract. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 52 patients with age-related cataract recruited from Peking University People's Hospital between May 15 and June 30, 2026. Ocular dominance, Pentacam-derived lens density, pupil parameters, visual acuity

Ocular Dominance is Associated With Interocular Asymmetry in Refractive Error and Axial Length Across Childhood and Early Adulthood.

PURPOSE: To determine whether ocular dominance is associated with systematic interocular asymmetry in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL) across childhood and early adulthood, and assess whether such asymmetry exceeds laterality effects. METHODS: Data were analysed from three population-based cohorts: 728 children (6-7-year-olds) and 898 adolescents (12-13-year-olds) from Ireland and 303 young adults (25-30-year-olds) from Western Australia. Ocular dominance was assessed using sighting tests. SER was measured by cycloplegic autorefraction and AL by optical biometry. In

Nogo Receptor 1 Limits Ocular Dominance Plasticity but not Turnover of Axonal Boutons in a Model of Amblyopia.

The formation and stability of dendritic spines on excitatory cortical neurons are correlated with adult visual plasticity, yet how the formation, loss, and stability of postsynaptic spines register with that of presynaptic axonal varicosities is unknown. Monocular deprivation has been demonstrated to increase the rate of formation of dendritic spines in visual cortex. However, we find that monocular deprivation does not alter the dynamics of intracortical axonal boutons in visual cortex of either adult wild-type (WT) mice or adult NgR1 mutant (ngr1-/-) mice that retain critical period visual

Ocularity modulates the dominance of spatial over temporal influences in binocular rivalry.

The perception of a binocular rivalry (BR) stimulus can be influenced by other stimuli in temporal or spatial proximity. Here, we investigate how spatial (surround inhibition [SI]) and temporal context (flash suppression [FS]) interact. Previously, we modulated these influences by varying surround contrast in SI and timing parameters in FS. In the present study, we make use of the fact that the strengths of the two contexts can also be manipulated in the same way, namely by modulating ocularity. We varied FS strength by showing the prime to the same eye as the identical probe or to the other e

Phosphodiesterase type 4 inhibition does not restore ocular dominance plasticity in a ferret model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that deficits in neuronal plasticity account for some of the neurological problems observed in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Recently, we showed that early alcohol exposure results in a permanent impairment in visual cortex ocular dominance (OD) plasticity in a ferret model of FASD. This disruption can be reversed, however, by treating animals with a Phosphodiesterase (PDE) type 1 inhibitor long after the period of alcohol exposure. AIM: Because the mammalian brain presents different types of PDE isoforms we tested here whether inhibition of PD

Effect of early monocular enucleation upon ocular dominance columns and cytochrome oxidase activity in monkey and human visual cortex.

We examined cytochrome oxidase (CO) activity in striate cortex of four macaque monkeys after monocular enucleation at ages 1, 1, 5, and 12 weeks. These animal experiments were performed to guide our interpretation of CO patterns in occipital lobe specimens obtained from two children who died several years after monocular enucleation during infancy for tumor. In the macaques, the ocular dominance columns were labelled by injecting [3H]proline into the remaining eye. After enucleation at age 1 week, ocular dominance columns were eliminated in layer IVc(beta), resulting in a uniform pattern of au

Short-term ocular dominance plasticity is not modulated by visual cortex tDCS but increases with length of monocular deprivation.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the occipital lobe may modulate visual cortex neuroplasticity. We assessed the acute effect of visual cortex anodal (a-)tDCS on ocular dominance plasticity induced by short-term monocular deprivation (MD), a well-established technique for inducing homeostatic plasticity in the visual system. In Experiment 1, active or sham visual cortex tDCS was applied during the last 20 min of 2-h MD following a within-subjects design (n = 17). Ocular dominance was measured using two computerized tests. The magnitude of ocular dominance plasticity was unaffec

Absence of ocular manifestations in autosomal dominant Alport syndrome associated with haematological abnormalties.

Most patients with Alport syndrome have X-linked or autosomal recessive disease that is characterised by renal failure, hearing loss, and, in nearly 75% of the cases, a dot-and-fleck retinopathy and anterior lenticonus. There are only case reports of individuals with the rare autosomal dominant form, who can have haematuria or renal failure, deafness, and, in addition, low platelet counts and neutrophil inclusions. The ocular features of autosomal dominant inheritance have not been described. We have examined the eyes in the members of two families where Alport syndrome was diagnosed on the ba

[Autosomal dominant keratoconus as the chief ocular symptom in Lobstein osteogenesis imperfecta tarda].

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta is an autosomal inherited generalized disease of the soft tissue which can be divided into a congenital form (Vrolik) and a late-onset form named Lobstein. As the typical ocular symptom we find blue sclera whereas corneal changes as keratoconus are rarely documented. We report a family of 6 patients, all 5 examined being affected by keratoconus. PATIENTS AND METHODS: After a 14-year-period of wearing hard contact lenses due to a keratoconus a 26-year-old female patient developed a painful therapy-resistant keratitis (Acanthamoeba) which afforded a keratopla

Dominance of conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue in the feline ocular immune system, with identification of lacrimal duct-associated lymphoid tissue.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue, which plays a crucial role in both immunological protection and inflammation at mucosal sites, shows interspecies variation in its distribution. In the ocular region, lacrimal duct-associated lymphoid tissue (LDALT) has rarely been investigated in animals other than humans or rodents. Although conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue (CALT) has been reported in various species, its cell composition remains unclear. Herein, we aimed to elucidate the morphology and development of the feline ocular immune system by examining the lacrimal tract and its associated t
