Menstrual cycle and social behavior in vervet monkeys.

We assessed the relationship between social behavior and the menstrual cycle in 11 adult female vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) living in an established, stable social group. The findings indicated that fluctuations in ovarian steroids are accompanied by behavioral changes in vervet monkeys. A significant increase in aggressive action, avoidance of social overtures, and retreats from threat occurred during the late luteal phase. However, the social environment can greatly affect behavior independent of the phase of the menstrual cycle. The 10 nondominant (or subordinate) indivi

Rapid Changes in Cholinergic Signaling, Myelination, and Thyroid Signaling Pathway Gene Expression in Amygdala Subnuclei in Response to Social Status Maintenance and Reorganization.

Male CD-1 mice form linear social hierarchies and can rapidly reform them following social reorganization. Through tag-based sequencing in the medial amygdala (MeA), we identified several genes regulating cholinergic signaling, myelination, and thyroid signaling that rapidly shift expression 70 min after animals change social status. Here, we further characterize the expression patterns of individual genes within these pathways in both stable and reorganized hierarchies. We find that genes related to cholinergic signaling show higher expression in the MeA of dominant males in stable hierarchie

Reproductive suppression in subordinate female highveld mole-rats (Cryptomys hottentotus pretoriae): no role for endogenous opioid peptides.

The influence of endogenous opioid peptides (EOPs) on plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in subordinate female highveld mole-rats (Cryptomys hottentotus pretoriae) was investigated to elucidate the physiological mechanisms responsible for inhibiting their gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and/or LH release. The opioid antagonist naloxone was administered either alone or with GnRH. A single injection of naloxone failed to alter plasma LH levels in dominant reproductive females or in subordinate non-reproductive females in the presence or absence of their ovaries. Pituitary sensitivity t

Gonadal steroid modulation of the limbic-hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis is influenced by social status in female rhesus monkeys.

Chronic stress can have a deleterious effect on the re-productive axis that, for females, is manifested in an increased incidence of infertility. However, gonadal steroids may, in turn, affect a female's response to stress as measured by activity within the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis. What is not clear is whether a history of exposure to stress modifies the effect of gonadal steroids on LHPA responsivity. Rhesus monkeys present a unique opportunity to assess LHPA responsivity when housed socially in groups. Under these situations, monkeys exhibit a rich network of affili

Serum cortisol concentrations of single-housed and isosexually pair-housed adult rhesus macaques.

Possible social distress was evaluated in 20 adult rhesus macaques housed in compatible isosexual pairs (5 female pairs, 5 male pairs) for the purpose of social environmental enrichment. Serum cortisol concentrations of paired animals were compared with serum cortisol concentrations of individually housed adult rhesus macaques of both sexes (5 females, 5 males). In both sexes, cortisol concentrations of paired animals (means 10 females = 19.5 +/- 2.9 micrograms/dl; means 10 males = 17.5 +/- 4.6 micrograms/dl) showed no significant difference (p always greater than 0.1) with those of single ani

Histological and Colour Doppler-Based Vascularity Analysis of Ovarian Follicles at Different Developmental Stages in Cattle.

Follicular dynamics represent the fundamental aspect of bovine reproduction, which relies on complex physiological and hormonal processes. To investigate the haemodynamics and characteristics of ovarian follicles at different stages of development in Atlas Brown cattle, 31 cycling non-lactating cows were submitted to the Ovsynch oestrous synchronisation protocol to standardise follicular development. Follicular growth and vascularisation were monitored using 2D and Doppler ultrasonography. Moreover, follicles were classified into dominant, largest subordinate and third-largest follicle. Also,

Hair pulling and eating in captive rhesus monkey troops.

Hair pulling and eating has not yet received attention in the nonhuman primate literature. Hair pulling and eating was recorded 388 times in two heterogeneous troops of healthy rhesus monkeys that were kept according to modern management practices. The behavior in question consists of the following sequence: pulling with the fingers (1/3 of cases) or with the teeth (2/3 of cases) tufts of hair from one's own or from a partner's coat; chewing the hair and finally swallowing it; the undigested material is excreted in the feces. Hair pulling was almost exclusively (378/388) partner-directed. It w

Social status mediated variation in hypothalamic transcriptional profiles of male mice.

Animals of different social status exhibit variation in aggression, territorial and reproductive behavior as well as activity patterns, feeding, drinking and status signaling. This behavioral and physiological plasticity is coordinated by underlying changes in brain gene transcription. Using Tag-based RNA sequencing (Tag-seq), we explore RNA transcriptomes from the medial preoptic area (mPOA) and ventral hypothalamus (vHYP) of male mice of different social ranks in a dominance hierarchy and detect candidate genes and cellular pathways that underlie status-related plasticity. Within the mPOA, o

Identifying the Interaction of the Brain and the Pituitary in Social - and Reproductive - State of Tilapia by Transcriptome Analyses.

INTRODUCTION: As in all vertebrates, reproduction in fish is regulated by gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) control on gonadotrophic hormones (GtHs) activity. However, the neuroendocrine factors that promote GnRH and GtH activity are unknown. In Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), sexual activity and reproduction ability depend on social rank; only dominant males and females reproduce. Here, this characteristic of dominant fish allows us to compare brain and pituitary gene expression in animals that do and do not reproduce, aiming to reveal mechanisms that regulate reproduction. Negative feedback regulation in the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal axis of rainbow trout subjected to chronic social stress.

The formation of dominance hierarchies in pairs of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) results in subordinate individuals exhibiting chronically elevated plasma cortisol concentrations. Cortisol levels reflect a balance between cortisol production, which is coordinated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis in teleost fish, and negative feedback regulation and hormone clearance, which act to lower cortisol levels. However, the mechanisms contributing to the longer-term elevation of cortisol levels during chronic stress are not well established in fishes. The current study

Neurobiology of Maternal Stress: Role of Social Rank and Central Oxytocin in Hypothalamic-Pituitary Adrenal Axis Modulation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress may conceivably require plasticity of maternal physiology and behavior to cope with the conflicting primary demands of infant rearing and foraging for food. In addition, social rank may play a pivotal role in mandating divergent homeostatic adaptations in cohesive social groups. We examined cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) oxytocin (OT) levels and hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis regulation in the context of maternal social stress and assessed the contribution of social rank to dyadic distance as reflective of distraction from normative maternal-infant interaction.

Chronic psychosocial stress induces morphological alterations in hippocampal pyramidal neurons of the tree shrew.

The effect of sustained psychosocial stress on the morphology of hippocampal pyramidal neurons was analysed in male tree shrews after 14, 20, and 28 days of social confrontation. A variety of physiological changes such as constantly elevated levels of urinary cortisol and norepinephrine and reduced body weight, which are indicative of chronic stress were observed in the subordinate, but not in the dominant males. Light microscopic analysis of Nissl-stained hippocampal sections showed that the staining intensity of the nucleoplasm in the CA1 and CA3 pyramidal neurons was increased after prolong

The Role of Consent in the Context of BDSM.

Consent represents a central focus in the controversial realm of BDSM-an overlapping acronym referring to the practices of Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadism and Masochism. Many authors have argued that the hallmark feature that distinguishes BDSM activity from abuse and psychopathology is the presence of mutual informed consent of all those involved. This review examines the relevant literature on consent in BDSM, including discussions on safety precautions, consent violations, North American laws pertaining to BDSM practice, and the role of the BDSM community with r

The power of love: mediation of rejection in roommate relationships of dependents and self-critics.

This research examined roommate responses to dependent and self-critical personality styles in the hope of finding individuals for whom rejection may be more likely. Interpersonal traits associated with dependency and self-criticism along the love and dominance axes of the Circumplex also were investigated to clarify patterns contributing to roommate rejection. Both dependents and self-critics were more depressed throughout the year. Dependents, however, were perceived as more submissive and loving and were better accepted by roommates. Self-critics were seen as submissive and hostile and were

Being bullied what an insight.

Bullying and harassment have occupied a prominent position in NATN workshops and publications recently. Challenging Behaviours in the Perioperative Environment identifies practices that fall within the definition of these socially and legally unacceptable activities, and provides advice and guidance to victims and those who use bullying or violent behaviours. In this article, the author draws on her own experience of being a victim and provides advice on how to identify and deal with bullying.

Right hemisphere dominance for the production of facial expression in monkeys.

In humans, the left side of the face (right hemisphere of the brain) is dominant in emotional expression. In rhesus monkeys, the left side of the face begins to display facial expression earlier than the right side and is more expressive. Humans perceive rhesus chimeras created by pairing the left half of the face with its mirror-reversed duplicate as more expressive than chimeras created by right-right pairings. That the right hemisphere determines facial expression, and the left hemisphere processes species-typical vocal signals, suggests that human and nonhuman primates exhibit the same pat

Mexican male homosexual interaction in public contexts.

In western societies, homosexuals must solve problems of how to recognize one another, meet and socialize while avoiding hostility and punishment. In the United States a preferred approach is to establish exclusive homosexual locales; but in Mexico, interaction problems are solved primarily in heterogeneous situations. The article shows how this is accomplished. The material is analyzed using game theory, a perspective which assumes that homosexual interaction exhibits qualities generally associated with games and can be analyzed utilizing concepts such as players, teams, rules, points, winnin

The propensity for schedule-induced polydipsia is related to differences in conditioned avoidance behaviour and in defense reactions in a defeat test.

In line with previous research showing that animals predisposed to develop schedule-induced polydipsia when submitted to intermittent distribution of food show differential behavioural and neurochemical characteristics, the present experiments investigated the nature of defense reactions to aversive situations in rats that do or do not develop schedule-induced polydipsia. It was found that rats that engage in excessive drinking during intermittent feeding display more rapid active avoidance learning in a 2-way shuttle-box and show less freezing when confronted with an aggressive resident male

Lorazepam treatment in the neonatal rat alters submissive behavior in adulthood.

Male hooded Lister rats were cross-fostered at birth (day 0) and reared in litters of eight. Within each litter, one pup was treated with each dose of lorazepam (0.25 or 1.25 mg/kg) and one was treated with the placebo vehicle. The pups received daily subcutaneous injections between postnatal days 7 and 21 inclusive. Starting on day 70 the animals were subjected to four tests of exploratory and social behavior: Open Field, Holeboard, Social Interaction and Home-Cage Aggression. The drug-treated animals showed an increase in submissive behavior, particularly when intruding into another animal's

Chronic psychosocial stress and experimental pubertal delay affect socioemotional behavior and amygdala functional connectivity in adolescent female rhesus macaques.

In females, pubertal onset appears to signal the opening of a window of increased vulnerability to the effects of stress on neurobehavioral development. What is the impact of pubertal timing on this process? We assessed the effects of pubertal timing and stress on behavior and amygdala functional connectivity (FC) in adolescent female macaques, whose social hierarchy provides an ethologically valid model of chronic psychosocial stress. Monkeys experienced puberty spontaneously (n = 34) or pubertal delay via Lupron treatment from age 16-33 months (n = 36). We examined the effects of stress (con
