Drinking behavior and motor function in rat pups depleted of brain dopamine during development.

The ability of rat pups depleted of brain dopamine (DA) at either 3 or 15 days of age to increase fluid intake in response to intracellular dehydration was studied. Despite near-total depletions of striatal DA, animals depleted at either age ingested normal amounts of fluid even as soon as 3-7 days after incurring the brain damage. The effects of DA receptor blockade on ingestion and motor function were also studied. Haloperidol had markedly different effects as a function of the age at which the depletions were sustained. Weanlings that were depleted of DA at 3 days of age failed to exhibit t

Rape Acknowledgment and Sexual Minority Women's Mental Health and Drinking Behaviors.

Adult sexual assault (ASA) has been linked to numerous negative psychological and behavioral outcomes. Recent research suggests that postassault adaptation may differ based on how the victim conceptualizes their ASA. For instance, women who label their rape experiences as such (i.e., acknowledged rape victims) report worse mental health symptoms than women who do not (i.e., unacknowledged rape victims). To date, this literature has focused exclusively on heterosexual women. Relative to heterosexuals, sexual minority women (SMW) are at greater risk for sexual assault and report worse postassaul

Naltrexone and combined behavioral intervention effects on trajectories of drinking in the COMBINE study.

OBJECTIVE: COMBINE is the largest study of pharmacotherapy for alcoholism in the United States to date, designed to answer questions about the benefits of combining behavioral and pharmacological interventions. Trajectory-based analyses of daily drinking data allowed identification of distinct drinking trajectories in smaller studies and demonstrated significant naltrexone effects even when primary analyses on summary drinking measures were unsuccessful. The objective of this study was to replicate and refine trajectory estimation and to assess effects of naltrexone, acamprosate and therapy on

Relationship of age of first drink to child behavioral problems and family psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Studies have implicated a wide variety of variables as being associated with an early age of first drink (AFD). AFD in turn has been associated with a variety of negative outcomes in adolescence and early adulthood. This study is designed to quantify the contributions of these antecedent variables to prediction of AFD; in particular it will carefully examine the involvement of variables in four areas (child characteristics, family demographics, family psychopathology, and child behavior problems). METHODS: Using data from a multicenter study on alcoholism, we first investigated th

Ethanol-Related Behaviors in Mouse Lines Selectively Bred for Drinking to Intoxication.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a devastating psychiatric disorder that has significant wide-reaching effects on individuals and society. Selectively bred mouse lines are an effective means of exploring the genetic and neuronal mechanisms underlying AUD and such studies are translationally important for identifying treatment options. Here, we report on behavioral characterization of two replicate lines of mice that drink to intoxication, the High Drinking in the Dark (HDID)-1 and -2 mice, which have been selectively bred (20+ generations) for the primary phenotype of reaching high blood alcohol

The effects of alcohol hangover on future drinking behavior and the development of alcohol problems.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol hangover experiences in young adulthood have been shown to predict more subsequent alcohol problems. Hangover susceptibility appears to be partially heritable and related to family history of alcohol use disorders. However, very little is known about the developmental course of these associations and whether they are accounted for by an individual's drinking history. The goal of this study is to investigate the prospective and unique relationships between family history of alcohol use disorders, severity of alcohol hangover experiences in adolescence, and later alcohol us

Soft drinks consumption is associated with behavior problems in 5-year-olds.

OBJECTIVE: To examine soda consumption and aggressive behaviors, attention problems, and withdrawal behavior among 5-year-old children. STUDY DESIGN: The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study is a prospective birth cohort study that follows a sample of mother-child pairs from 20 large US cities. Mothers reported children's behaviors using the Child Behavior Checklist at age 5 years and were asked to report how many servings of soda the child drinks on a typical day. RESULTS: In the sample of 2929 children, 52% were boys, 51% were African-American, 43% consumed at least one serving of so

Relationships of alcohol dehydrogenase 1B (ADH1B) and aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) genotypes with alcohol sensitivity, drinking behavior and problem drinking in Japanese older men.

OBJECTIVES: Many East Asians have the genetic polymorphisms rs1229984 in alcohol dehydrogenase 1B (ADH1B) and rs671 in aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2). Here we analyzed the relationships of the two genotypes with alcohol sensitivity, drinking behavior and problem drinking among older and younger men living in rural areas of Japan. METHODS: The subjects were 718 Japanese men aged 63.3 ± 10.8 (mean ± SD), categorized into the older (≥65 years, n = 357) and younger (<65 years, n = 361) groups. Facial flushing frequency, drinking behavior and positive CAGE results were compared among the genotyp

A Replication and Extension of the Factor Structure of the Masculine Drinking Norms Measure (MDNM) and Associations with Drinking Behaviors in a Multisite Sample of College Men.

Gender-specific norms are learned, which can influence social norms, attitudes, and behaviors in specific situations. For example, men who conform to certain masculine norms/ideals may express their masculinity by drinking alcohol. Recent research indicates that endorsement of alcohol-specific masculine norms is mixed when predicting men's risk for heavy consumption and adverse alcohol-related outcomes. Using a large, college sample of self-identified men (n=1350; M age=20.10/SD=1.80; 12 universities), we examined the psychometric properties of the Masculine Drinking Norms Measure-MNDM, and th

Motives to play drinking games and their unique associations with drinking game behaviors and consequences in a national sample of university students in the United States.

Objective: Playing drinking games (DGs) is a common behavior among university students, which is concerning given that DG participation is related to more alcohol use/consequences. People's motivations for playing DGs are associated with certain DG behavior patterns and negative consequences. However, few studies have accounted for general drinking motives and other key covariates when examining the unique associations between DG-specific motivations and DG outcomes. The present study used a large, multisite national sample of university students in the United States to determine cross-section

The way one thinks affects the way one drinks: subjective evaluations of alcohol consequences predict subsequent change in drinking behavior.

Heavy alcohol use and related consequences are common during the college years and are associated with deleterious outcomes for both the students themselves and the college community. Some college students make self-initiated changes to their drinking to avoid such outcomes, but little is known about how such adjustments occur, or characteristics that are associated with making these adjustments. Based on Social Learning Theory (SLT), one cognitive factor that may predict within-person changes in drinking is the subjective evaluations of alcohol consequences (i.e., the extent to which conseque

From diet to drinking behavior: Ketogenic diet decreases ethanol intake in young adult female mice.

The normalization of ethanol consumption in Western societies represents a major public health concern, particularly when drinking begins during adolescence. The ketogenic diet (KD) has demonstrated therapeutic potential in various conditions, including substance use disorders. This, together with evidence showing that the diet does not significantly affect locomotor activity or aversive and spatial memory in adolescent male mice, makes it an interesting tool for addressing ethanol consumption during a critical developmental period: the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. However,

Ethanol drinking sex-dependently alters cortical IL-1β synaptic signaling and cognitive behavior in mice.

Individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) struggle with inhibitory control, decision making, and emotional processing. These cognitive symptoms reduce treatment adherence, worsen clinical outcomes, and promote relapse. Neuroimmune activation is a key factor in the pathophysiology of AUD, and targeting this modulatory system is less likely to produce unwanted side effects compared to directly targeting neurotransmitter dysfunction. Notably, the cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β) has been broadly associated with the cognitive symptoms of AUD, though the underlying mechanisms are not well understo

The Behavior of Polymeric Pipes in Drinking Water Distribution System-Comparison with Other Pipe Materials.

The inner walls of the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) are expected to be clean to ensure a safe quality of drinking water. Complex physical, chemical, and biological processes take place when water comes into contact with the pipe surface. This paper describes the impact of leaching different compounds from the water supply pipes into drinking water and subsequent risks. Among these compounds, there are heavy metals. It is necessary to prevent these metals from getting into the DWDS. Those compounds are susceptible to impacting the quality of the water delivered to the population ei

Polygenic risk for alcohol consumption and multisite chronic pain: Associations with ad lib drinking behavior.

Interrelations between alcohol use disorder and chronic pain have received increasing empirical attention, and several lines of evidence support the possibility of shared genetic liability. However, research on the genetic contributions to the component processes of these complex and potentially overlapping phenotypes remains scarce. The goal of the present study was to test polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for alcohol consumption and multisite chronic pain as predictors of ad lib drinking behavior during an experimental taste test. PRSs were calculated for 209 pain-free, moderate-to-heavy drinker

Drinking behavior among older adults in a planned retirement community: results from The Villages survey.

OBJECTIVES: Research indicates increasing trends among older adults toward heavy and abusive drinking, often associated with depressive symptoms. Possible exceptions are residents of planned retirement communities, whose drinking may be associated with social activities. To better understand these relationships, this study examined the relationship of depressive symptoms and drinking in a large retirement community. METHODS: The Villages, a retirement community in central Florida with a focus on healthy, active living, has almost 90,000 residents. In 2012, a population-based needs assessment

Early drinking onset and its association with alcohol use and problem behavior in late adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between age of drinking onset and patterns of use, abuse of other substances, and the prevalence of other alcohol-related problems in a population of midwestern high school seniors. DESIGN: We analyzed self-report survey data on public school students' history of alcohol and other drug use and related problems from the Minnesota Student Survey conducted in 1989. The sample consisted of 2,650 male and female seniors, representing a 10% random sample of all white seniors in the study. RESULTS: The findings suggest that early onset of alcohol use (by age 1

Effects of ALDH2 gene polymorphisms and alcohol-drinking behavior on micronuclei frequency in non-smokers.

Alcohol abuse is a serious health problem, leading to life-threatening damage to most of the important organ systems. Genotoxic damage is used as an early effect indicator in the surveillance of human exposure to genotoxic substances. Intra- and inter-individual variations of baseline frequencies of micronuclei (MN) in peripheral blood lymphocytes of human populations have been reported previously. Polymorphisms in a few metabolic enzyme genes seem to account for a proportion of this variability, but the impact of specific genetic variants on MN frequencies has not yet been clarified. In 42 he
