Parental and offspring assessment of driving capability under the influence of drugs or alcohol: gender and inter-generational differences.

The current study set to examine whether there are inter-generational and gender-based differences between family members self-assessing their ability to drive under normal conditions and while under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. Participants were 135 young-adults and both their parents, consisting 45 family triads, who received self-assessment questionnaires relating to their driving skills in various road scenarios. Each family triad was randomly assigned to one of three groups: either requested to base the assessments on normal driving conditions, or under the influence of eithe

Failure to fully disclose during pretransplant psychological evaluation in alcoholic liver disease: a driving under the influence corroboration study.

The prevention of recidivism in alcoholic liver disease is one of the aims of pretransplant psychological evaluation (PE). Failure to fully disclose the extent of alcohol use is evidence of ongoing alcoholism. Driving under the influence (DUI) represents objective evidence of alcohol abuse, but verifying DUIs through official records is not standard during PE. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was failure to fully disclose alcohol abuse on the part of patients on the basis of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) DUI rate. Demographics, alcohol abuse/abstinence hi

Mortality and causes of death among people suspected of driving under the influence and testing positive for multiple substances.

Aims: Understanding the mortality of drug users using multiple substances is helpful in preventing the harmful effects of polydrug use. We examined overall and cause-specific mortality and differences in mortality based on social background among people suspected of driving under the influence and testing positive for multiple substances (DUIMS) compared with the general Finnish population. Methods: Register data from 785 DUIMS during 2003-2006 were studied, with a reference population (n = 25,381) drawn from the general Finnish population. The effect of DUIMS on all-cause and cause-specific m

Which drugs are associated with highest risk for being arrested for driving under the influence? A case-control study.

The aim of this study was to determine the association between drug type and arrest for driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) by calculating odds ratios (ORs) using a case-control design. A DUID arrest is in most cases related to aberrant or risky driving and might therefore be regarded as a proxy for a drug related traffic crash. The 'cases' were 2738 drivers arrested on suspicion of drugged driving from April 2008 to March 2009 with blood alcohol concentrations below the legal limit of 0.2g/L; 794 were arrested due to involvement in road traffic crashes, whereas 1944 were arrested for

Driving under the influence of opiates: concentration relationships between morphine, codeine, 6-acetyl morphine, and ethyl morphine in blood.

Morphine and codeine are frequently identified in blood samples from impaired drivers. But whether these opiates reflect the use of prescription analgesics or abuse of the illicit drug heroin (diacetyl morphine) is not always obvious. Opiates, either alone or together with other drugs, were determined in 2,573 blood specimens from impaired drivers by sensitive and specific methods of analysis. The specific metabolite of heroin 6-acetyl morphine (6-AM) was quantifiable in only 52 cases (2%) at mean, median, and highest concentrations of 0.015, 0.010, and 0.10 mg/L, respectively. The mean, media

Substance and psychiatric disorders among men and women repeat driving under the influence offenders who accept a treatment-sentencing option.

OBJECTIVE: Driving under the influence (DUI) continues to be a serious public health concern in the United States. Research suggests that the substance use/abuse and psychiatric histories of repeat offenders might contribute to the persistence of this phenomenon. Because psychiatric histories could be important to recovery and likely differ substantially between men and women, the present study examined psychiatric and substance-use histories of male and female DUI repeat offenders in treatment. METHOD: Seven hundred twenty-nine residents at the Middlesex Driving Under the Influence of Liquor

Driving under the influence of alcohol and alcohol use disorder: the relevance of early identification from an Italian retrospective outpatient study.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, almost 1.2 million people drive under the influence of alcohol. However, early identification of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in subjects driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol is seldom achieved. AIM: The aim of our retrospective study is to investigate the presence of AUD in a population of DUI subjects who had their driving license suspended, and if they were following a specific rehabilitation program. METHODS AND RESULTS: 750 subjects were retrospectively enrolled from 2018 to 2021. DSM-V to assess AUD was used. Forty-eight (6.4%) subjects presented a diagno

Retrospective analysis of new psychoactive substances in blood samples of German drivers suspected of driving under the influence of drugs.

Driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) is a serious global problem and poses a public health risk. With new psychoactive substances (NPS) entering the illicit drug market several years ago, a significant number of highly potent and harmful drugs have become easily available and the use of these substances may impair a person's ability to drive a vehicle safely. Since NPS are not usually covered in routine toxicological analyses used in DUID investigations, only little is known about their prevalence. To gather more information on the prevalence of NPS in cases of impaired driving, a retro

A review of suspected cases of driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) involved in traffic accidents in Istanbul (Turkey).

Nowadays traffic accidents, which have high mortality and morbidity, are an important public health problem. The association between the use of alcohol and/or drugs by drivers and the increased risk of traffic accidents with a high risk of death and injury has been well described in the literature. This study aimed to review the incidence of cases of driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) among all cases of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and/or other drugs involved in traffic accidents and to evaluate the type of the psychoactive drugs (with or without alcohol) detected in b

Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs in the Netherlands 1995-1998 in view of the German and Belgian legislation.

This study presents the test results of blood and urine samples of impaired drivers in the Netherlands between January 1995 and December 1998. In this period, the blood alcohol concentrations of 11,458 samples have been determined and 1665 blood or urine samples have been analysed for drugs. The median alcohol concentration was between 1.7 and 1.8 mg/ml blood. In 80% of the 1665 analysed samples drugs were detected. At least 42% (702/1665) of the impaired drivers were poly-drug users, with cocaine present in the most frequent combinations. In the Netherlands, the procedure to prove driving und

Reorganization of theta phase-locking in the orbitofrontal cortex drives cocaine choice under the influence.

Cortical theta oscillations of neuronal activity are a fundamental mechanism driving goal-directed behavior. We previously identified in the rat orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) a neuronal correlate of individual preferences between cocaine use and an alternative nondrug reward (i.e. saccharin). Whether theta oscillations are also associated with choice behavior between a drug and a nondrug reward remains unknown. Here we investigated the temporal structure between single unit activity and theta band oscillations (4-12 Hz) in the OFC of rats choosing between cocaine and saccharin. First, we found th

Driving under the influence of cannabis: a 10-year study of age and gender differences in the concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol in blood.

BACKGROUND: Delta(9)-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the major psychoactive constituent of cannabis and its various preparations. Increasing use of cannabis for recreational purposes has created a problem for road-traffic safety. This paper compares age, gender and the concentrations of THC in blood of individuals apprehended for driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) in Sweden, where a zero-tolerance law operates. MEASUREMENTS: Specimens of blood or urine were subjected to a broad screening analysis by enzyme immunoassay methods. THC positives were verified by analysis of blood by gas chr

Suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs: Cross sectional analysis of drug prevalence in the context of the Swiss legislation.

Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs (DUID) is a major field of study to improve road safety. In Switzerland, during controls whether or not they follow an accident, the police can request toxicological analysis targeted either on alcohol only (ALC cases), or on drugs and alcohol (DUID cases). To evaluate both the drugs consumption on the road and whether or not these requests are well correlated with toxicological results, we built a database recording 4003 offenders (3443 males, 550 females) over a two-year period (2018-2019) in Western Switzerland. ALC case samples were then ana

Driving under the influence of central stimulant amines: age and gender differences in concentrations of amphetamine, methamphetamine, and ecstasy in blood.

OBJECTIVE: A zero-tolerance law for driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) was introduced in Sweden in 1999. This change in legislation has led to a 12-fold increase in the number of blood samples sent by the police for toxicological analysis. Here we report the age and gender of offenders, along with the concentrations of amphetamine, methamphetamine, and ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxymeth-amphetamine) in blood samples analyzed since the institution of the new legislation. METHOD: A forensic toxicology database (TOXBASE) was used to identify cases of DUID in which central stimulant amines

A review of drug abuse in recently reported cases of driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) in Asia, USA, and Europe.

Driving Under the Influence of Drugs (DUID) is considered a serious issue related to the abuse of illegal drugs. DUID cases, including deaths, are being continuously reported in Asia, USA, and Europe. This literature review focuses on illegal drug abuse in recent DUID cases reported in Asia, USA, and Europe. To determine illegal drug abuse in DUID suspects, previous studies collected and analyzed biological samples, such as blood, urine, oral fluids, and hair. In addition, there were forensic autopsies and surveys for investigation of illegal drugs in DUID cases and drivers. In previous studie
