Predictors of accidental fatal drug overdose among a cohort of injection drug users.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated factors associated with accidental fatal drug overdose among a cohort of injection drug users (IDUs). METHODS: In a prospective cohort study of 2849 IDUs in King County, Washington, deaths were identified by electronically merging subject identifiers with death certificate records. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of overdose mortality. RESULTS: Thirty-two overdoses were observed. Independent predictors of overdose mortality were bisexual sexual orientation (relative risk [RR] = 4.86; 95% confidence int

Open-air drug markets and opioid-related overdose deaths.

Place-based drug-related overdose studies rarely measure where drugs are sold directly, despite the potential policy value of identifying micro-areas where overdose prevention resources can be targeted. This study examines whether open-air drug-selling locations are associated with opioid-related overdose deaths on Chicago's Westside. I identified 86 open-air drug-selling locations through systematic field observation (May-December 2025). Opioid-related overdose deaths were drawn from the Cook County Medical Examiner's case archive and assigned to a monthly panel of 161 census block groups (Ja

Drug Overdose Deaths in the United States, 2023-2024.

INTRODUCTION: This report uses 2023-2024 National Vital Statistic System data to present the demographic group and by the type of drugs involved, specifically opioids and stimulants, with a focus on changes from 2023 to 2024. METHODS: Data from the 2023-2024 NVSS were used for this analysis. Estimates are based on the National Vital Statistics System multiple-cause-of-death mortality files (1). Drug poisoning (overdose) deaths were defined as having an International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision underlying cause-of-death code of X40-X44 (unintentional), X60-X64 (suicide), X85 (hom

Law Enforcement Drug Seizures and Opioid-Involved Overdose Mortality.

IMPORTANCE: Opioid-involved overdose mortality has been on the rise for 2 decades in the US, exacerbated by an unregulated drug supply that is unpredictable and has increasingly contained highly potent fentanyl analogs starting a decade ago. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a geospatial association between law enforcement drug seizures and opioid-involved overdose mortality in San Francisco. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used location- and time-stamped overdose mortality data from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and publicly available crime da

Pharmaceutical drug overdose case reports. From the World Literature.

All pharmaceutical drugs have the potential to be misused or wrongly administered, which can result in toxic amounts of drug being ingested. To help you keep up-to-date with the latest data on outcomes and management of overdoses, both accidental and intentional, we have selected the following case reports recently published in the international medical literature and summarised in Reactions Weekly. Any claim of first report has been verified by a search of the Adisbase (a proprietary database of Adis International) and Medline. In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) Adverse Drug Rea

Prescription drug monitoring programs and drug overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines and prescription opioids.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the US, benzodiazepine overdose deaths increased at an alarming rate in the past two decades. Benzodiazepines were also the most common drugs involved in prescription opioid overdose deaths. Benzodiazepine prescribing has been monitored by Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs), but little was known about whether PDMPs reduced drug overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study used a difference-in-difference design with state-quarter aggregate data on drug overdose deaths. The primary data source was Mortality Multiple Cause Files in

Patients presenting to the ED with nonfatal drug overdose: Self-reported history of overdose and naloxone use.

BACKGROUND: In the context of polysubstance use and fentanyl detection in non-opioid drugs supplies (e.g., cocaine, methamphetamine), it is important to re-evaluate and expand our understanding of which populations are at high risk for fatal drug overdoses. The primary objective of this pilot study was to gather data from the ED to characterize the population presenting with drug overdose, including demographics, drug use patterns and comorbidities, to inform upstream overdose prevention efforts. METHODS: A consecutive sample of ED patients undergoing treatment for non-fatal overdose were pro

Unintentional drug overdose: Is more frequent use of non-prescribed buprenorphine associated with lower risk of overdose?

BACKGROUND: Unintentional drug overdoses have reached epidemic levels in the U.S. This study tests the hypothesis that people who have used non-prescribed buprenorphine more frequently in the past six months were less likely to experience a drug overdose during that same time period. METHODS: Participants age 18 years or older with opioid use disorder who reported use of non-prescribed buprenorphine in the last six months were recruited from the Dayton, Ohio, area using a combination of targeted and modified respondent-driven sampling. Participants completed a structured interview, including

Methodological issues in the surveillance of poisoning, illicit drug overdose, and heroin overdose deaths in new Mexico.

New Mexico leads the nation in poisoning mortality, which has increased during the 1990s in New Mexico and the United States. Most of this increase has been due to unintentional deaths from illicit drug overdoses. Medical examiner and/or vital statistics data have been used to track poisoning deaths. In this study, the authors linked medical examiner and vital statistics records on underlying cause of death, coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, to assess the extent to which these data sources agreed with respect to poisoning deaths. The authors used multipl

Drug supply measures and drug overdose mortality in the era of fentanyl and stimulants.

BACKGROUND: Illicitly-manufactured fentanyl and stimulants have replaced prescription opioids as the primary contributors to fatal overdoses in the United States (US), yet the street supply of these substances is challenging to quantify. Building on the foundation of prior research on law enforcement drug reports, the present study compares publicly available forensic laboratory drug report measures to identify which measures account for the most variation in drug overdose mortality between states, within states over time, and in various demographic groups. METHODS: Drug reports from the Nati

Association of drug overdoses and user characteristics of Canada's national mobile/virtual overdose response hotline: the National Overdose Response Service (NORS).

BACKGROUND: Several novel overdose response technology interventions, also known as mobile overdose response services (MORS), have emerged as adjunct measures to reduce the harms associated with the drug poisoning epidemic. This retrospective observational study aims to identify the characteristics and outcomes of individuals utilizing one such service, the National Overdose Response Service (NORS). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using NORS call logs from December 2020 to April 2023 imputed by operators. A variety of variables were examined including demographics, substance u

U.S. Drug Overdose Deaths that Occurred in Isolation, 2022-2024.

AbstractTimeliness of drug overdose response efforts may be improved when bystanders are present to provide life-saving care. From January 2022 through December 2024, a total of 191,577 unintentional or undetermined intent overdose deaths occurred in 46 U.S. states and Washington, DC. Of these, 75.5% occurred in isolation (i.e., with no evidence of a bystander present or with a bystander spatially separated from the decedent), and 55.0% occurred in isolation in a house or apartment setting. Emerging technological approaches, in addition to improvements in overdose education and distribution of

Drug-induced myocarditis precipitated by amlodipine overdose: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Amlodipine is the most commonly prescribed calcium channel blocker (CCB), used in the treatment of a variety of cardiovascular conditions. Calcium channel blockers remain a well-established cause of cardiovascular drug overdose. We present the case of an intentional overdose with 250 mg of amlodipine resulting in acute left ventricular dysfunction and myocarditis. CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old man with no significant past medical history presented to the emergency department 8 h after intentionally ingesting 250 mg of amlodipine. Although initially asymptomatic with unremarkable phy

Racial/ethnic differences in US drug overdose mortality, 2017-2018.

BACKGROUND: The year 2018 marked the first year since 1999 in which the number of drug overdose deaths in the United States (US) declined compared to the previous year. However, it is unclear whether this decline was observed across all racial/ethnic groups. METHODS: Death certificate data from the National Center for Health Statistics were examined for drug overdoses among US residents with a race and ethnicity specified (69,764 in 2017 and 66,949 in 2018). Age-specific and age-adjusted drug overdose mortality rates for 2017 and 2018 were compared by race/ethnicity, overall, by sex, and for

Fatal hydrocodone overdose in a child: pharmacogenetics and drug interactions.

Fatal opioid toxicity occurred in a developmentally delayed child aged 5 years 9 months who was inadvertently administered high doses of hydrocodone for a respiratory tract infection. The concentration of hydrocodone in postmortem blood was in the range associated with fatality; however, hydromorphone, a major metabolite catalyzed by cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6), was not detected when using mass spectrometry. Genetic analysis revealed that the child had a reduced capability to metabolize the drug via the CYP2D6 pathway (CYP2D6*2A/*41). Coadministration of clarithromycin (a potent cytochrome P4
