Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that is active against staphylococci, streptococci, and other gram-positive bacteria. It is the drug of choice for the treatment of infections due to methicillin-resistant staphylococci, Corynebacterium jeikeium, and multiply resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Vancomycin is an alternative treatment for serious staphylococcal and streptococcal infections, including endocarditis, when allergy precludes the use of penicillins and cephalosporins. Vancomycin is bactericidal against most strains of staphylococci and nonenterococcal streptococci. Al

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major global health burden, and chemotherapy resistance remains a major challenge to effective treatment. Increasing evidence indicates that the gut microbiota may contribute to variability in chemotherapy response in CRC through microbial metabolism, tumor-cell adaptation, immune regulation, and microbiota-derived metabolites. These processes can alter drug exposure, cellular stress responses, antitumor immunity, and metabolic conditions within the tumor-host ecosystem. In this review, we summarize current evidence on the mechanisms linking the gut microbiota to c

With the irrational use of antibiotics and the increasing abuse of oral antibiotics, the drug resistance of gastrointestinal pathogens has become a prominent problem in clinical practice. Gut microbiota plays an important role in maintaining human health, and the change of microbiota also affects the activity of pathogenic bacteria. Interfering with antibiotic resistant bacteria by affecting gut microbiota has also become an important regulatory signal. In clinical application, due to the unique advantages of traditional Chinese medicine in sterilization and drug resistance, it is possible for

A total of 598 isolates of Shigella species (24 S. dysenteriae, 254 S. flexneri, 30 S. boydii, 290 S. sonnei) submitted to the Ontario Public Health Laboratories in 1990 were tested for their susceptibility to 14 antimicrobial agents by the agar dilution method. Overall 79.6% of isolates were resistant to one or more antimicrobial agents and 52.0% were resistant to four or more. Trimethoprim resistance ranged from 26.7% among isolates of S. boydii to 39.4% among S. flexneri strains. The majority of the 224 TMP resistant isolates (88.8%) demonstrated high level resistance (MIC > 1000 mg/l) to t

Progress in the medical profession is determined by the achievements and effectiveness of new antibiotics in the treatment of microbial infections. However, the development of multiple-drug resistance in numerous bacteria, especially Gram-negative bacteria, has limited the treatment options. Due to this resistance, the resurgence of cyclic polypeptide drugs like colistin remains the only option. The drug, colistin, is a well-known growth inhibitor of Gram-negative bacteria like Acinetobacter baumanni, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Technological advanc

Aeromonas schubertii has emerged as a significant pathogen in hybrid snakehead (Channa argus♀ × Channa maculata♂), and its antibiotic resistance has become increasingly severe. However, resistance mechanisms in this species are still insufficiently characterized. In this study, we evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility of 74 A. schubertii isolated from hybrid snakehead. The results showed that sulfonamides had the highest resistance rate, 93.24 % for sulfamethoxazole sodium and 86.49 % for trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, whereas enrofloxacin showed the lowest (5.41 %). A total of 90.54 % of

Microorganisms employ quorum sensing (QS) mechanisms to communicate with each other within microbial ecosystems. Emerging evidence suggests that intraspecies and interspecies QS plays an important role in antimicrobial resistance in microbial communities. However, the relationship between interkingdom QS and antimicrobial resistance is largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that interkingdom QS interactions between a bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and a yeast, Candida albicans, induce the resistance of the latter to a widely used antifungal fluconazole. Phenotypic, transcriptomic, and proteo

We compared the clinical efficacy, the bactericidal effects, effect on the oral microbial flora, and adverse reactions between cefditoren pivoxil (CDTR-PI) for 5 days and amoxicillin (AMPC) for 10 days in children with acute group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GAS) tonsillopharyngitis, and simultaneously examined the emm genotype and drug susceptibility of the isolated GAS. The results showed that the clinical efficacy was 100% for CDTR-PI and 97.9% for AMPC, with no difference between the two groups, and the bacterial elimination rate was 100% in both groups. No serious adverse event was not

Since the introduction of the penicillins many decades ago, multiple species of bacteria have responded to the use of antimicrobial agents in their ability to develop and transmit antimicrobial resistance. Increased consumption of antimicrobial agents, their misappropriate use among other factors have further catalysed this resistance phenomenon. As bacterial resistance is a global healthcare issue, appropriate monitoring through governmental, institutional and industry or pharmaceutical led surveillance programmes is essential. This chapter describes the resistance issue, factors affecting th

Salicylate induces multiple antibiotic resistance in various bacterial species. Here we investigated the effect of salicylate on the susceptibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to a range of antituberculosis (anti-TB) drugs. In the presence of salicylate, the killing effects of isoniazid (INH), rifampin (RMP), ethambutol (EMB), streptomycin (STR), and p-aminosalicylate (PAS) were reduced, as shown with a tetrazolium redox dye viability assay and a bacterial survival assay. Salicylate-induced resistance was more pronounced for PAS, STR, and EMB but was not apparent for INH and RMP when salicyl

AML often relapses due to chemotherapy resistance, increasingly linked to gut microbiome dysbiosis. Microbial drug modification, immune modulation, and metabolite-driven survival/epigenetic changes (e.g., SCFAs, kynurenine) promote resistance. Clinical data associate reduced diversity, loss of Faecalibacterium, and Enterococcus overgrowth with poorer outcomes. Microbiome interventions (FMT, probiotics, diet) show promise; priorities are standardizing methods and defining microbe-metabolite mechanisms to guide trials.

Many human-targeted medications have been found to impact patients' gastrointestinal microbiomes, which has been proposed as an unrecognized source of drug side effects, comorbidities, and reduced treatment efficiencies. However, current methods for detecting such effects, such as patient sample analysis or in vitro high-throughput screening, are both labor- and resource-intensive. To accelerate the discovery of drug effects on the microbiome, we developed machine learning models that predict whether a small, drug-like molecule is likely to inhibit the growth of any of 40 representative human

In antibiotic therapy it is necessary to use drugs active against the pathogen in its association with the host normal microflora. The aim of the study was to investigate modification of antibiotic resistance under conditions of the pathogen association with the representatives of the host normal microflora and to develop the microbiological criteria for determining effectiveness of antibacterials. Modification of microbial antibiotic resistance was investigated in 408 associations. Various changes in the antibiotic resistance of the strains were revealed: synergism, antagonism and indifferenc

Over the past 10 years, microbial resistance has seriously threatened human life and health, and the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacteria remains a challenge for clinicians, pharmacists, and infectious disease physicians. Bacterial resistance is affected by a variety of factors, such as the environment, economy, and drug abuse. This review compared the differences in bacterial resistance rates between high- and low-altitude areas and explored the relevant mechanisms of bacterial resistance in the low-oxygen environment of plateaus, providing new clinical research ideas for curbing the occ

Over the last two decades, occurrence of bacterial resistance to commonly used antibiotics has necessitated the development of safer and more potent anti-microbial drugs. However, the development of novel antibiotics is severely hampered by adverse side effects, such as drug-induced liver toxicity. Several antibacterial drugs are known to have the potential to cause severe liver damage. The major challenge in developing novel anti-microbial drugs is to predict, with certain amount of probability, the drug-induced toxicity during the pre-clinical stages, thus optimizing and reducing the time an

The decreasing effectiveness of conventional drugs due to multidrug-resistance is a major challenge for the scientific community, necessitating development of novel antimicrobial agents. In the present era of coronavirus 2 (COVID-19) pandemic, patients are being widely exposed to antimicrobial drugs and hence the problem of multidrug-resistance shall be aggravated in the days to come. Consequently, revisiting the phenomena of multidrug resistance leading to formulation of effective antimicrobial agents is the need of the hour. As a result, this review sheds light on the looming crisis of multi

Current drug therapy against infections is threatening to become obsolete due to the poor physical, chemical, biological and pharmacokinetic properties of drugs, followed by high risk of acquiring resistance. Taking into account the significant benefits of nanotechnology, nano-based delivery of anti-infectious agents is emerging as a potential approach to combat several lethal infections. Co-delivery of multiple anti-infectious agents in a single nano-based system is beginning to show significant advantages over mono-therapy, such as synergism, enhanced anti-microbial activity, broad anti-micr

Multidrug resistance is a leading concern in public health. It describes a complex phenotype whose predominant feature is resistance to a wide range of structurally unrelated cytotoxic compounds, many of which are anticancer agents. Multidrug resistance may be also related to antimicrobial drugs, and is known to be one of the most serious global public health threats of this century. Indeed, this phenomenon has increased both mortality and morbidity as a consequence of treatment failures and its incidence in healthcare costs. The large amounts of antibiotics used in human therapies, as well as
