Interest in smoking cessation among injection drug users.

We describe the degree of nicotine addiction and readiness to quit smoking among people with a history of injection drug use, comparing those in a methadone maintenance treatment program (MMTP) with active illicit drug injectors in a needle exchange program (NEP). Interview data were collected from 452 persons in Providence, RI, from July 1997 to March 1998. Ninety-one percent (91%) of the population currently smoked cigarettes. Smokers were more likely to be female and from an NEP. Higher nicotine dependence by the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence was found in Caucasians, those with a

Hematological considerations in out-of-treatment drug users.

Complete blood counts (CBCs) were performed on 215 out-of-treatment injecting and noninjecting drug users participating in a federally sponsored human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk-reduction program in Houston, Texas. A substantial proportion of patients/clients were found to be suffering from varying degrees of anemia and other hematological conditions. Anemia is known to affect cognitive skills such as the ability to concentrate and process information. This impairment can limit the effectiveness of drug intervention and treatment, even among those users eager to participate in intervent

STD control in drug users and street youth.

OBJECTIVE: To review the relation between drug use, sexual risk behaviour, and STDs including HIV in two marginalised populations--drug users and street youth. METHODS: A review of recent medical and behavioural literature focusing on illustrative examples from industrialised countries. FINDINGS: Injecting and other illicit drug users and street youth are both sexually active populations with a high rate of partner turnover and frequently exchange sex for money or drugs. Both STDs and HIV are prevalent among injecting and crack using individuals. Drug use may lead drug users to be less aware

Mortality among drug users in the AIDS era.

BACKGROUND: Infection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) causes progressive immune deficiency, the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and death. Mortality, however, particularly with causes other than AIDS, deserves further study. A retrospective cohort study among drug users in Italy was performed to estimated absolute and proportional mortality rates due to AIDS and other causes, with or without HIV-1 infection. METHODS: All subjects who enrolled between January 1980 and July 1990 in the drug treatment programme in the Province of Bologna, Italy, were included in the c

Correlates of needle sharing among injection drug users.

OBJECTIVES: The sharing of contaminated injection equipment is the primary mode of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission for injection drug users. This study examined demographic factors, life events, and drug use practices that are potential risk factors for sharing injection equipment. METHODS: Between February 1988 and March 1989, 2921 active injection drug users were interviewed and questioned about their backgrounds, life-styles, and patterns of injection drug use. RESULTS: Of 2524 participants who reported injecting drugs within the 6 months prior to study enrollment, 70.4% r

HIV antibodies among intravenous drug users in Bahrain.

A 12-month study was conducted to identify risk factors for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections among intravenous drug users (IDU) attending drug rehabilitation clinic of the Psychiatric Hospital, Manama, Bahrain. Patients provided demographic and behavioural information based on a questionnaire. Two hundred and forty male IDUs participated in the study on voluntary basis. The seroprevalence of HIV was 21.1 per cent. The presence of HIV antibody was associated with educational status, frequency of injecting drugs and needle sharing.

AIDS and self-organization among intravenous drug users.

Gays and intravenous (i.v.) drug users are the two largest risk groups for AIDS. Gays, unlike drug users, have formed many organizations to deal with AIDS. Data are presented indicating that gay individuals have more risk-reducing behavioral changes than have i.v. drug users. It is also shown that i.v. drug users are more likely to protect themselves if their acquaintances do so. It is suggested that collective self-organization can lead to peer support for risk reduction and that this can help i.v. drug users to reduce their risks on an ongoing basis. Difficulties that face i.v. drug users' a

Mortality of registered drug users in Central Asia.

BACKGROUND: Within the fifth phase of the Central Asia Drug Action Programme (CADAP) covering five post-Soviet Central Asian countries, an analysis of the mortality of drug users was performed. The results for Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are presented in detail in this paper since results from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are not considered valid and Turkmenistan did not provide data at all. METHODS: A system of registration of all users of illegal drugs known to the health and/or law enforcement authorities ("narcological registers") exists in Central Asian countries inherited from the system of

Outbreak of wound botulism in injecting drug users.

Between October and December 2005, 16 cases of wound botulism were notified to the health authorities of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. All patients were injecting drug users (IDU) and the epidemiological investigations suggested contaminated injection drugs as the most probable source of infection. Clostridium botulinum was cultivated from clinical samples of six patients and molecular typing revealed that the different isolates were clonally identical. Two samples of heroin, one of them provided by a patient, were examined but C. botulinum could not be isolated. This outbreak demonstrates

Estimating the total mortality among problem drug users.

This paper's objective is to develop a method to estimate the total mortality among problem drug users. The total mortality is given by a base rate of mortality not related to drugs and the deaths that are directly and indirectly related to drugs. A fatal poisoning by drugs (overdose) is directly related to drugs, whereas a casualty due to a drug-related disease or a drug-related accident is indirectly related to drugs. As an example of a method to estimate the total mortality, the results from a cohort study among methadone patients in Amsterdam were projected on the whole population of probl

Hepatitis C virus reinfection in injection drug users.

Spontaneous clearance of hepatitis C (HCV) may provide protection against reinfection. In a large community-based cohort study of 3,553 inner-city residents (mainly injection drug users), we identified HCV-infected individuals in whom virological clearance had occurred and compared the rate of reinfection in this group with that observed in previously uninfected members of the same cohort. We identified 926 HCV-uninfected and 658 HCV-infected viremic subjects at baseline, with 152 of 658 (23.1%) spontaneously clearing viremia over a median follow-up of 5.2 years (IQR, 2.8-7.4). At baseline, in

Determinants of HAART discontinuation among injection drug users.

The objective of this study was to identify psychosocial determinants of, and self-reported reasons for, HAART discontinuation among HIV-positive injection drug users (IDUs). We examined correlates between sociodemographic characteristics, drug use and risk behaviors, outcome expectations, adherence self-efficacy, social support and HAART discontinuation among 160 HIV-positive participants in the Vancouver Injection Drug Users' Study (VIDUS). Logistic regression was used to identify the factors independently associated with discontinuation of HAART. Seventy-one (44%) study participants discont

Sexual behavior of drug-users: is it different?

BACKGROUND: Across the world, drug-users (DU) have been shown to be at greater risk of contracting and transmitting sexually transmitted diseases and HIV infection. However, in the metropolitan cities of India, where drug-use patterns may uniquely vary between injection and noninjection, depending on drug availability, little is known about the risk behavior of drug-users. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to find out whether drug-users are more likely to practice high-risk sexual behavior compared to non-drug users. METHODS: The sexual behavior of 70 drug-users, selected by snowball

Cognitive function in HIV-1-infected drug users.

Loss of cognitive ability, the most common neuropsychological complication in HIV-1 disease, may influence compliance with treatment and has been associated with decreased functional capacity, as well as an increased risk of mortality. In HIV-1-infected drug users, cognitive impairment affecting attention, memory, planning of complex tasks, information processing, and motor processes, has been reported, similar to findings in predominantly HIV-1-infected nondrug-using cohorts. The issue of whether early signs of cognitive dysfunction can be identified in asymptomatic HIV-1-infected drug users
