Improvement of Dysgeusia by Polaprezinc, a Zinc-L-carnosine, in Outpatients Receiving Cancer Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Dysgeusia is one of the adverse events frequently affecting patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy. Dysgeusia-induced anorexia could decrease patient's quality of life. The present study was designed to determine whether the zinc-containing compound polaprezinc improves chemotherapy-induced dysgeusia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The incidence of grade 2 dysgeusia was assessed in 634 patients receiving cancer chemotherapy in outpatient settings during January 2013 and June 2017. Polaprezinc was administered to patients showing grade 2 dysgeusia and the effect was compared with that

Sweet taste (dysgeusia). The first symptom of hyponatremia in small cell carcinoma of the lung.

Three patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung presented with a persistent unpleasant sweet taste as their initial and only symptom. On further evaluation, they were found to have hyponatremia secondary to the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. In each case, resolution of the sweet taste paralleled an increase in serum sodium concentration after water restriction alone. Linkage of the sweet taste with a low serum sodium concentration strongly implicates hyponatremia--rather than tumor, antidiuretic factor, medications, or chemotherapy--as the central mechanism r

Time Course and Determinants of Acute Dysgeusia in Patients Receiving Head and Neck Radiation Therapy.

PURPOSE: Dysgeusia is a common toxicity experienced by patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) receiving radiation therapy (RT). In this study, we assessed the timescale of onset, progression, and recovery of dysgeusia using an objective measure. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients receiving RT for HNC to ≥ 50 Gy were included in this prospective observational study. The Waterless Empirical Taste Test (WETT) was used to objectively measure dysgeusia for the 5 basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami. Patients were assessed at baseline (pre-RT), 2 and 4 weeks mid-treatment, end of trea

Photobiomodulation in the Treatment of Dysgeusia in Patients with Long COVID: A Single-Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate local and systemic photobiomodulation (PBM) in patients with COVID-19-related dysgeusia, with the expectation of improving taste dysfunction. Background: PBM has garnered attention as a potential therapy in long COVID, a condition characterized by many persistent symptoms following the acute phase of COVID-19. Among these symptoms, dysgeusia, or altered taste perception, can significantly affect patients' quality of life. Emerging research suggests that PBM may hold promise in ameliorating dysgeusia by modulating cellular processes and reducing i

Carcinoid tumor of the thymus associated with Cushing's syndrome and dysgeusia: case report and review of the literature.

A 30-year-old man was hospitalized with edema, polyuria, and abnormalities in taste. ACTH and cortisol levels at admission were markedly elevated, even after attempted suppression with 8 mg dexamethasone. A thoracic-abdominal CT revealed an anterior mediastinal lesion and hyperplasia of both adrenal glands. After excision of the mediastinal mass, which confirmed the presence of a carcinoid thymic tumor, the patient became totally asymptomatic, with normal ACTH and cortisol levels. A carcinoid thymic tumor has a poor prognosis, especially when it is associated with Cushing's syndrome. Most pati

Dysgeusia-Driven Nutritional Decline in Cirrhosis: A Case of Autoimmune Hepatitis and Primary Biliary Cholangitis.

Dysgeusia, or altered taste perception, is characterized by metallic, sweet, sour, or bitter sensations that can significantly impair oral intake and contribute to malnutrition, particularly in patients with chronic illness. This report describes a 75-year-old woman with decompensated cirrhosis secondary to autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), who presented with a persistent metallic taste and an unintentional 25-pound weight loss over three months. Dysgeusia began shortly after the initiation of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and led to reduced caloric intake, early satiet

Sweet Taste Dysgeusia in a Patient with Indapamide-Related Hyponatremia: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Sweet taste dysgeusia is a rare symptom where patients experience all food as having a sweet taste. While its cause is still unknown, it has been increasingly reported in the setting of lung cancer and syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone-related hyponatremia. In this case report, we present what we believe to be the first case of sweet taste dysgeusia in a non-cancer context. We will briefly review and summarize all published cases describing this symptom and also reflect upon the nature of this condition focusing on the role of serum sodium levels in sweet taste recept
