PURPOSE: We studied the impact of dyslipidemia on 24-hour urinalysis and stone composition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients with nephrolithiasis who underwent 24-hour urinalysis and lipid profile evaluation within 3 months. Patients were divided into groups based on total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, nonhigh density lipoprotein and triglycerides. The groups were compared based on demographic data, diabetes, hypertension and each component of 24-hour urinalysis and stone composition. Multivariate analysis and linear regression were performed to control f

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and risk factor of dyslipidemia in Thai schoolchildren.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A cross section- study of 348 schoolchildren aged 6-17.8 years in Nakork Nayok province, Thailand between May and June 2009 was conducted. Total cholesterol and triglyceride were measured from a 10-hour fasting blood. Dyslipidemia (hypercholesterolemia and/or hypertriglyceridemia) was defined according to the American Academy of Pediatrics AAP) guidelines. Demographic and anthropometric data were recorded. Odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were used to compare the prevalence

Cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia and glucose intolerance are highly prevalent in Cushing's syndrome. Lipid abnormalities have been reported in 40-70% of patients, including those with 'subclinical' disease. Surgical cure is associated with significant amelioration of lipid profile in the majority of patients. Treatment of persistent hyperlipidemia should be conducted according to the accepted general principles in use for other medical conditions. Nevertheless, patients requiring medical treatment for persistent hypercortisolism present specific challenges, acco

Numerous studies in recent years had proved pathogenetic correlation of the intestinal ecological community, not only with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract but also with diseases such as atherosclerosis and hypertension, urolithiasis and pyelonephritis, gallstones and hepatitis. In its role in maintaining homeostasis an intestinal microflora isn't inferior to any other vital organs. All this allowed to distinguish it as an independent body. Recently, as one of the most important factors for the development of dyslipidemia scientists consider breaking the functional state of the liver, as

Treatment for dyslipidemia in diabetes reduces cardiovascular events. Diabetes is associated with major abnormalities in fatty acid metabolism. The resulting disturbance results in an abnormal lipoprotein cascade from the large chylomicron through to the small HDL particle. This suggests that drugs that alter formation of the chylomicron particle might have a very important role in diabetic dyslipidemia. Achieving normal glycemia will reverse the abnormalities in fatty acid metabolism, but this is difficult, particularly as the disease progresses. Genes that regulate cholesterol absorption and

Elevated triglycerides are now considered an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease and continue to be a major risk for acute pancreatitis, especially when levels exceed 1000 mg/dL (SOR: B). Elevated triglycerides are a component of atherogenic dyslipidemia and often signal the presence of other conditions (eg, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus) associated with an increased cardiovascular risk (SOR: A). When evaluating a patient with elevated triglycerides, it is important to be cognizant of all atherogenic lipoproteins to more accurately determine the risk of coronary h

The early lesions of atherosclerosis begin in childhood, and are related to antecedent cardiovascular disease risk factors. Environmental and genetic factors such as diet, obesity, exercise, and certain inherited dyslipidemias influence the progression of such lesions. The identification of youth at risk for atherosclerosis includes an integrated assessment of these predisposing factors. Treatment starts with a diet low in total and saturated fat and cholesterol, the use of water-soluble fiber and plant sterols, weight control, and exercise. Drug therapy, for example, with inhibitors of hydrox

Peripheral atherosclerosis (carotid and aortofemoral vascular districts) shows some peculiar characteristics with respect to coronary atherosclerosis. In this paper we have reviewed the most recent studies on the relationships between atherosclerosis of the limbs and lipid metabolism. Several authors have described increased plasma levels of lipoprotein remnants, lipoprotein (a) and some lipid peroxidation parameters in extracoronary atherosclerosis, while HDL (and their subfractions) seem to be reduced. Some of these modifications may be related to the direct metabolic effects of smoking and

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) affects 12 % of adult population and is increasing globally and in India. Peripheral arterial disease when associated with atherosclerosis in two or more other arterial beds such as coronary artery disease (CAD), mesenteric/renal artery and cerebrovascular disease (CVD), is known as polyvascular disease. The Reduction of Atherothrombosis for Continued Health (REACH) registry reported that 1 out of 6 patients had multi-vascular bed involvement. Progression of PAD to critical limb ischaemia (CLI) is seen in 1 % of affected patients per year, but patients who pro

Introduction: Lipid disorders are frequent after kidney transplantation (KT) and KT recipients are considered at high- or very-high cardiovascular risk. Among many concurring factors, a major role is played by immunosuppressants.Areas covered: General measures to manage lipid disorders first include physical activity and diet counseling. Modulating the doses of immunosuppressants also improves dyslipidemia. When lipid-lowering drugs are necessary to control elevated plasma cholesterol and/or triglycerides, statins are the cornerstone for managing hypercholesterolemia. However, side-effects (e.

In about 28% of patients, dyslipidemia has a secondary cause. Many times, the treatment of these causes can lead to the total correction of dyslipidemia. We describe the case of a 50-year-old female patient with class II obesity and primary biliary cirrhosis, evaluated for mixed dyslipidemia with poor control (statins and fibrates were being administered) as well as abnormal liver tests. The investigation carried out revealed primary auto-immune hypothyroidism. After normalisation of thyroid function by treatment with levothyroxine, as well as suspending the administration of statins and fibra

Ischemic heart disease is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the developed world. Although reperfusion therapies are currently the best treatment for this entity, the restoration of blood flow leads, under certain circumstances, to a form of myocardial damage called reperfusion injury. Several studies have shown that age, sex, smoking, diabetes and dyslipidemia are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Among these risk factors, dyslipidemias are present in 40% of patients with ischemic heart disease and represent the clinical factor with the greatest impact on the prognosis of pa

The purpose of this manuscript is to highlight the peculiarities of the Mexican population regarding the clinical expression, genetics, and treatment of lipid disorders. Furthermore, it is a call for action to address the existing gaps in care and research of dyslipidemias. The Mexican Mestizos are highly susceptible to metabolic disorders (i.e., low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations, hypertriglyceridemia, abdominal obesity, and type 2 diabetes); these conditions are associated with ethnic-specific genetic variants. On the other hand, despite the high prevalence of dyslipidem

There is a linear relationship between LDLcholesterol plasma concentration and coronary events, both in patients with stable angina pectoris and after an acute event. All medications that affect the lipid profile do not have a favorable effect on cardiovascular events (i.e. niacin, inhibitors of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein). Statins increase slightly the risk of type II diabetes in subjects at risk. We have also learnt that statins activate a transcription factor that increases LDL-cholesterol receptors, as well as a protein named " PCSK9 ". This latter protein reduces the number of

Dyslipidemia is abnormalities of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. Most dyslipidemias are hyperlipidemias; that is an abnormally high level of lipids and/or lipoproteins in the blood. Lipid and lipoprotein abnormalities are common in the general population, and are regarded as a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease due to their influence on atherosclerosis. Primary dyslipidemia is usually due to genetic causes, while secondary dyslipidemia arises due to other underlying causes such as diabetes mellitus. Thus, dyslipidemia is an important factor in the development of atherosclerosi

Hypercholesterolemia is a major concern in the USA, with studies identifying children as young as 2years old with early-stage atherosclerosis. Genetics play a major role in the dyslipidemia of children, but other factors, such as diet and lack of physical activity, confound the problem. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic condition that causes lifelong elevations in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The heterozygous form of the disease affects around 1 in 200 people, and the homozygous form of the disease affects around 1 in 160,000-300,000 people. Early identification a
