Defects due to earlobe gauging are becoming more and more frequent. Many techniques have been described to repair major defects but very few papers exist about medium defects. The aim of this article is to describe a simple surgical technique to repair medium deformations, based on two opposite crescents on the anterior and posterior sides of the earlobe. It gives a harmonious result to the overall shape of the earlobes with a natural curve along the inferior border which is the most difficult part of this surgery.

External ear abnormalities are frequent in newborns ranging from microtia to partial auricle duplication. Little is known about the molecular mechanisms orchestrating external ear morphogenesis. In humans, HOXA2 partial loss of function induces a bilateral microtia associated with an abnormal shape of the auricle. In mice, Hoxa2 inactivation at early gestational stages results in external auditory canal (EAC) duplication and absence of the auricle, whereas its late inactivation results in a hypomorphic auricle, mimicking the human HOXA2 mutant condition. By genetic fate mapping we found that t

For microtia correction we have been inserting a cartilage framework and reconstructing the tragus at the first operation in one stage, using part of the microtic ear. This procedure is started with transposition of the lower two-thirds of the microtic ear to make a lobule. The upper third of the microtic ear is elevated as a chondrocutaneous flap which is then transposed downwards to the conchal cavity to make a tragus. The cartilage of the chondrocutaneous flap is anchored, using a bolster to pull it back and outwards. Using this technique, we have reconstructed 34 microtic ears. Adequate po

OBJECTIVE: To explore the anthropometric changes of the auricle after auricular cartilage unfolding in moderate concha-type microtia patients, so as to provide the basis to help evaluate surgical timing and prognostic.
METHODS: A total of 33 children with moderate concha-type microtia, who were treated with auricular cartilage unfolding between October 2016 and September 2018 and met the inclusive criteria, were included in the study. There were 24 boys and 9 girls with an average age of 1.4 years (range, 1-3 years). Sixteen cases were left ears and 17 cases were right ears. The follow-up tim

BACKGROUND: The positioning of the auricle is a key factor in successful ear reconstruction. However, the position of the ear is usually determined by transferring the auricle image of the nonaffected side to the affected side using a transparent film. Augmented reality (AR) is becoming useful in the surgical field allowing computer-generated images to be superimposed on patients. In this report, we would like to introduce an application of AR technology in ear reconstruction.
METHODS: AR technology was used to determine the position of the reconstructed ear of a 10-year-old male with right m

BACKGROUND: At present, there are not international unified standards and reports on Congenital Ear Malformation (CEM) in the world, which makes it difficult to transfer information and compare the literature.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: Through the statistical analysis of a large sample of CEM, a unified standard of all aspects of CEM is proposed and the data are provided for reference, which is convenient for the international work and literature comparison in this field.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on the author's 30 years of clinical and scientific research work on CEM and the relevant cases of 32

INTRODUCTION: Congenital auricular anomalies can be categorized either as malformational or deformational. The first are characterized by a partial absence of the skin or cartilage resulting in a constricted or underdeveloped pinna and require surgical correction. Deformations are characterized by a misshaped but fully developed pinna and are best treated by auricular molding.
AIM: Authors want to present their case load in treatment of infants affected by deformational auricolar anomalies and describe their techniques using early splinting for congenital auricular deformities, like prominent

External canal reconstruction of extensive tissue defects, including auricle or ear canal defects, is challenging. We describe the case of a 28-year-old man who underwent staged skin and nasal septum cartilage grafting for ear canal reconstruction after resectioning a giant arteriovenous malformation of the auricle. We performed arteriovenous malformation resection and reconstruction of the significant tissue defect using an anterolateral femoral skin flap. Simultaneously, a Nelaton catheter stent was placed to temporarily form an external auditory canal. Subsequently, split-thickness skin gra

BACKGROUND: In the treatment of microtia, the search has been for surgical techniques that prevent postoperative complications and realize sufficient and stable projection of the constructed ear.
METHODS: Cartilage was fixed with absorbable synthetic thread instead of wire because wire has a high risk of exposure. A subcutaneous pedicle was added to the concha to prevent skin necrosis. Dead space and hematoma creation were prevented with vacuum aspiration, bolster fixation, and microdrainage with small tubes. A triangular skin flap connecting to the ear lobe was used to prevent shrinkage on t

Among the microtic disorders, those with the remnant ear, ear lobule, concha, acoustic meatus, tragus, and incisura intertragica are classified as concha-type microtia. From these characteristic factors, concha-type microtia has been thought to be a milder form of microtic disorder in comparison with lobule-type microtia. The constructed modified three-dimensional costal cartilage framework is grafted to the superior portion of the auricle and fixed to the inferior remnant cartilage of the auricle (conchal portion). This may appear to be a simple procedure in comparison with the other microtic

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of the application of the cyanoacrylate-based glue for the strengthening of the reconstructed elements of the middle ear and its influence on the regeneration of the cartilaginous tissue. We used the cartilaginous tissue from the auricles of the male California rabbits as a model. The cartilage was destroyed in a standard press. Half of the cartilage thus fragmented was implanted into the left auricle. The remaining part was mixed up with the cyanoacrylate glue and implanted into the right auricle of the same animal. The implan

Accessory auricle and polyotia are rare congenital anomalies of the external ear resulting from abnormal development of the auricular hillocks. Polyotia represents a severe variant in which the accessory structure resembles an additional pinna. We report a paediatric case of unilateral accessory auricle in a child presenting to the Department of Pediatrics at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Clinical evaluation revealed no associated systemic abnormalities. The patient underwent surgical excision by the Department of ENT with satisfactory aesthetic outcome and no postoperative complicatio

Forty cases of external ear trauma have been studied during a period of three years from Jan '2001 to December 2004. It was observed that accidental trauma to the auricle may result in laceration, partial or complete loss of auricle. Injury of the tympanic membrane, temporal bone or facio maxillary region may be associated with auricular trauma. All wounds of auricle carry a risk of infection leading to perichondritis. Principles of successful treatment are conservation of tissue and prevention of infection.

In cartilage conduction (CC), a vibrator is presented onto the cartilage of the ear instead of the bony parts of the head used in ordinary bone conduction (BC). Because the auricle cartilage is softer and lighter than the bone, it doesn't require as much pressure as BC, which may cause discomfort (or pain) in the area where a BC transducer is being pressed. However, CC is a relatively new technology, and whether the less dense characteristics of cartilage, which varies from person to person, result in a better sound perception is still being studied. In this paper, we focused on investigating

In recent years, high ear-piercing and wearing earrings in the cartilaginous region of the auricle have become popular. The frequent occurrence of subsequent complications also has been pointed out. The present case is of a 17-year-old girl with an auricular deformity caused by infections occurring after piercing in the scapha. The authors performed an auriculoplasty by excision of the deformed cartilage and autologous cartilage graft from the ipsilateral concha. At present, 1 year and 5 months after the operation, no sign of recontracture is noted, and the auricle remains in a gratifying shap

During auricle reconstruction, lobular transposition has become a routine technique applied by most of surgeons. But to some low-set remnant ears, it is difficult to manipulate the conventional lobule transposition method in clinical application. In this article, the authors introduce a method to retrogradely transpose the remnant ear with the the ratio of length:width of the lobular flap being 4-5:1. The lobule transposition could be applied during the first stage of Nagata method or the third stage using expansion method. The authors take the superior part of the remnant ear as the pedicle a

Plical folding of the cartilagenous ear plate is largely determined by the insertions of four extrinsic and seven intrinsic auricular muscles. Dissection of ten external auricles from anencephalic fetuses of six or more months' gestation was done. The transversus and obliquus auricular muscles found in association with the antihelical fold were evaluated. Four auricles were of normal form and had the transversus and obliquus auricular muscles with typical insertions in the cartilage. Six of the ten auricles had a simplified form, with no antihelical folding in five and minimal development in o
