Evidence-based psychosocial treatments for eating problems and eating disorders.

Eating disorders represent a significant source of psychological impairment among adolescents. However, most controlled treatment studies have focused on adult populations. This review provides a synthesis of existing data concerning the efficacy of various psychosocial interventions for eating disorders in adolescent samples. Modes of therapy examined in adolescent samples include family therapy, cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy mostly in patients with anorexia nervosa. At this time, the evidence base is strongest for the Maudsley model of family therapy

Eating Disorder Prevention.

Thirteen percent of girls and women experience an eating disorder, yet most do not receive treatment. Thus, broad implementation of eating disorder prevention programs that reduce eating disorder symptoms and future eating disorder onset is a critical priority. This article (1) reviews risk factors that have been shown to predict future onset of eating disorders, because this should guide the content of prevention programs and high-risk subgroups to target with selective prevention programs; (2) reviews the evidence base for eating disorder prevention programs that have reduced eating disorder

Childhood eating disorders.

This paper reviews the recent research literature on childhood eating disorders from a developmental perspective. Although there have been some recent advances in research, much work remains to be done, especially studies specific to child and adolescent eating disorders, as well as definitive follow-up studies. Few data are available on the normal development of eating behavior, or resilience and risk factors for eating pathology. The best-studied areas include epidemiological studies, short-term treatment for bulimia nervosa, and outcome in anorexia nervosa.

Tardive eating dystonia.

After cessation of long-term treatment with haloperidol, a 77-year-old man developed severe dyskinetic-dystonic movements involving mainly the tongue and associated also with oromandibular dystonia and blepharospasm that were manifested exclusively during the process of eating and that interfered with feeding. There were no spontaneous involuntary movements nor were they apparent during any other simple or complex activations of the orofacial musculature.

Beyond Picky Eating.

Joseph is a 20-month-old boy who was thriving and developing well before a 4-day hospitalization for paralytic ileus at 11 months of age. Joseph is the first child born to parents who immigrated to the United States from Southeast Asia 3 years ago. Before the hospitalization, Joseph consumed 3 meals and 480 to 600 mL of milk daily. Oral feedings were restricted during the hospitalization with subsequent rejection of foods upon reintroduction of oral feeds. This resulted in 2 kg of weight loss by follow-up at 13 months. Joseph was referred to the multidisciplinary feeding and nutrition clinic a

Binge Eating Disorder.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder and an important public health problem. Lifetime prevalence of BED in the United States is 2.6%. In contrast to other eating disorders, the female to male ratio in BED is more balanced. BED co-occurs with a plethora of psychiatric disorders, most commonly mood and anxiety disorders. BED is also associated with obesity and its numerous complications. Although BED is similar in men and women in presentation and treatment outcomes, there are some key neurobiological differences that should be taken in consideration when personalizing

Preventing eating disorders.

This article reviews eating disorder (ED) prevention programs, highlighting features that define successful programs and particularly promising interventions, and how they might be further refined. The field of ED prevention has advanced considerably both theoretically and methodologically compared with the earlier ED prevention programs, which were largely psychoeducational and met with limited success. Recent meta-analytic findings show that more than half (51%) of ED prevention interventions reduced ED risk factors and more than a quarter (29%) reduced current or future eating pathology (EP

[Binge eating disorder].

In 1994 binge eating disorder (BED) was included into the DSM-IV as provisional diagnostic category requiring further study. The prevalence in the general population is 2%; BED is 1.5 times more common in women than men. Up to 30% of participants in weight loss programs meet criteria for BED. As opposed to patients with bulimia nervosa (BN), restraint or restrictive eating is not a necessary antecedent in the development of BED. Eating-related as well as general psychopathology is significantly more common in obese patients with BED compared to obese patients without BED. In treating obese pat

[Adolescent eating disorders].

Anorexia and Bulimia nervosa are common psychiatric disorders in adolescent girls. In discrepancy to ICD-10 and DSM-IV we would propose the 10th BMI percentile as weight criterium for anorexia nervosa. Both disorders have a high somatic and psychiatric comorbidity; the most severe complication at long term follow-up is osteoporosis. The most prevalent psychiatric disorders are affective disorders, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder and substance abuse. There is undoubtedly a genetic predisposition and a range of general and personal environmental risk factors. Treatment of adolescent ea

From Disordered Eating to Eating Competence: Exploring Transitions in Adolescent Eating Profiles and the Role of Identity, Embodiment, and Critical Eating Messages From Parents and Peers.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is a key period for the development of eating behaviours. To date, little attention has been paid to the development of positive eating behaviours during adolescence, and longitudinal research with such a holistic focus is lacking. To provide a better understanding of adolescent eating behaviours, this study examined patterns of stability and change in eating profiles among community youth. In addition, this study examined how these profiles and patterns were related to background, psychological, and contextual variables. METHOD AND RESULTS: This longitudinal study with

CONSORT-Assistive technology-180° rotating eating spoon improves the ability of eating of self-care patients with upper extremity dyskinesia: Rotating eating spoon improves eating ability.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop an assistive technology-180° rotating feeding spoon that could improve the ability of eating of self-care patients with upper extremity dyskinesia. METHODS: The Brunnstrom 6-stage rating of hemiplegia was adopted. During the different recovery stages of the upper limbs, the patients orally ate using a feeding spoon with a non-rotatory head and a 180° rotating feeding spoon. The ability of these patients to eat by themselves was observed, and the basic activity of daily living (BADL) was assessed using the Barthel index (BI). RESULTS: The Brunnstrom asses

Eating disorders and disordered eating on wrestling sport: a systematic review.

Although there are studies on the effects of eating disorders (EDs) among athletes, a limited number of studies have been conducted in wrestling. This systematic review aims to identify the prevalence of eating disorders (ED) and disordered eating (DE) in wrestling, which is important for developing healthier weight control behaviours within the sport. A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA protocol, focusing on publications from the last 10 years. PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science were used to identify eligible studies with the searching terms "Eating di

Metacognitive beliefs across eating disorders and eating behaviours: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Literature has pointed out a probable association between metacognitive beliefs and eating disorders. To date, no study has synthetized all research exploring the differences or similarities in metacognitive beliefs across different eating disorders diagnoses and eating problems. AIMS: To review the evidence on metacognitive beliefs across the spectrum of eating disorders and eating behaviours. METHOD: A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed and PsycInfo. The search terms used were: 'eating disorders/anorexia/bulimia/binge eating disorder/binge eating' AND 'metacognitions/

Emotional eating and temperamental traits in Eating Disorders: A dimensional approach.

Growing evidence shows that temperamental features and emotional dysregulation are linked to Eating Disorders (EDs). Aim of this study was to explore the possible relationship between temperament and emotional eating (EE) from a dimensional standpoint, and the association of specific temperamental dimensions with overeating triggered by specific emotions. We enrolled 253 women with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. Of those, 189 (74.7%), 73 (28.8%), and 80 (31.6%) reported binge eating, purging, or restrictive behaviors, respectively (the categories are not mutually

Eating patterns of US adults: Meals, snacks, and time of eating.

The objective of this paper is to update knowledge of eating patterns of US adults with sex and ethnicity specific estimates and discuss the implications of reported patterns with respect to current resurgence of interest in the topic. The eating patterns data were from the NHANES 2009-2014 (n = 15,341 adults). Overall, American adults reported 4.96 ± 0.03 eating episodes in the recall. Women were more likely to report each of the three main meals and all three meals plus one or more snacks relative to men (P < 0.0001). Relative to other ethnic groups, non-Hispanic blacks were less likely to r

Cognitive behavior therapy for eating disorders versus normalization of eating behavior.

We examine the science and evidence supporting cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for the treatment of bulimia nervosa and other eating disorders. Recent trials focusing on the abnormal cognitive and emotional aspects of bulimia have reported a remission rate of about 45%, and a relapse rate of about 30% within one year. However, an early CBT trial that emphasized the normalization of eating behavior had a better outcome than treatment that focused on cognitive intervention. In support of this finding, another treatment, that restores a normal eating behavior using mealtime feedback, has an esti

Loss of control over eating reflects eating disturbances and general psychopathology.

This study examined the clinical significance of the loss of control over eating as a key component of eating disorders. It investigated the association of eating-related psychopathology and general psychopathology with objective bulimic episodes (OBEs; experiencing a loss of control while consuming large amounts of food) and subjective bulimic episodes (SBEs; experiencing a loss of control while consuming small/moderate amounts). A community sample of 81 women with a range of disordered eating was recruited: binge-eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, subclinical eating disturbances, or no eating
