In the search for better herbicides a series of 1-alkyl-3-(alpha-hydroxy-(un)substituted benzylidene)pyrrolidine-2,4-diones were prepared and their structure-activity relationships studied. All their structures have been confirmed by (1)H-NMR and elemental analysis. The preliminary bioassay results indicated that some of them have high herbicidal activity against annual dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous plants.

The long-term application of traditional chemical herbicides has caused a significant escalation in herbicide resistance of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli). As an eco-friendly alternative, biological herbicides demonstrate substantial application potential. Acknowledging the growing herbicide resistance of E. crus-galli, this study aimed to screen target bacteria with inhibitory effects on the growth for bio-herbicide development. By using ungerminated E. crus-galli seeds as the screening substrate, a bacterial strain (BFYBC-8) with potent inhibitory activity was isolated and identifie

The rapid evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds has driven urgent demand for eco-friendly bioherbicides, yet most microbial agents suffer narrow application ranges and unstable field efficacy. In this study, an Albifimbria verrucaria strain DY01 was isolated from naturally diseased leaves of Oplismenus undulatifolius. At 4 × 107 CFU mL-1, DY01 spore suspension caused severe chlorosis and seedling mortality across six out of seven tested weeds within 5 days, while only Cyperus iria sustained minimal injury. The mortality rates of Echinochloa crus-galli, Microstegium vimineum, and the invasive

BACKGROUND: Fendioxypyracil is a new protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO; HRAC Group 14)-inhibiting herbicide developed to expand post-emergence weed control options. The compound combines a pyridine-based core with an aryloxy side chain, resulting in high biological activity. Physiological profiling and enzyme assays confirmed PPO inhibition as its mode of action, with strong inhibition of both PPO1 and PPO2 from Amaranthus tuberculatus and higher potency than saflufenacil, particularly against PPO2. Greenhouse and field studies demonstrated broad-spectrum efficacy against major broadleaf and gra

Inhibitor design based on the natural product fosmidomycin (FOS) as a lead structure is a promising strategy in search of herbicidally active compounds that may target the DXR enzyme in the MEP pathway. Herein, two metal ion chelating groups, aminol and amide, were used to replace the hydroxamate moiety of FOS, and two types of non-hydroxamate FOS analogs, namely aminol- (5a ∼ n and 6a ∼ o) and phenylamide-containing (10a ∼ v) phosphonic acids were designed and synthesized by establishing facile routes involving the Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction, epoxide ring-opening, acrylamidation, Michael addi

BACKGROUND: Fungal natural products offer significant advantages, including novel modes-of-action (MoAs), high environmental compatibility, safety to nontarget organisms and low resistance risk, making them valuable resources for developing eco-friendly and effective herbicides. This study evaluated the herbicidal activity of aureonitol, a compound derived from Chaetomium coarctatum NEAU-Z3, and elucidated its molecular mode-of-action. These findings provide a promising compound and theoretical foundation for developing novel and highly effective herbicides.
RESULTS: Aureonitol exhibited sign

BACKGROUND: Natural products and their synthetic derivatives are notable sources for discovering new lead compounds of herbicides. Terpene natural product (3E)-4, 8-dimethyl-1, 3, 7-nontriene (DMNT) has been proven to be able to repel and kill the insects, whereas its other bioactivities have rarely been studied.
RESULTS: In this study, we focus on the herbicidal activity of DMNT and its derivatives. A series of oxygen- or nitrogen-containing DMNT allyl derivatives were designed and synthesized as novel herbicide candidates. They were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS spectral analysi

Developing innovative and effective herbicides is of utmost importance since weed management has become a worldwide agricultural production concern, resulting in severe economic losses every year. In this study, a series of new pyrimidinedione compounds were developed via combination of pyrimidinediones with N-phenylacetamide moiety. The herbicidal activity test (37.5-150 g of ai/ha) indicated that most of the new derivatives exhibited excellent herbicidal activity against dicotyledonous weeds, but less against grasses. Among them, compound 34 was identified as the best postemergence herbicida

Pyridazinone-based protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors are an important class of herbicidal lead structures, but the influence of sulfur-linked cycloalkyl ester side chains on this scaffold has not been systematically investigated. In this study, twenty-seven sulfur-linked ester-substituted pyridazinone derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for post-emergence herbicidal activity against two broadleaf weeds and two grass weeds. Most compounds showed high activity against the tested broadleaf species at the highest dose, whereas grass-weed control was more strongly affect

BACKGROUND: Direct-seeded rice (Oryza sativa) is increasingly adopted with agricultural mechanization, but weed competition, particularly from Echinochloa crus-galli, remains a major yield constraint. Tripyrasulfone, a novel HPPD-inhibiting herbicide, offers excellent selectivity for direct-seeded rice and effective control of resistant weeds; however, the molecular basis underlying rice tolerance to this herbicide is largely unknown. This study aimed to identify and functionally characterize the key gene(s) responsible for tripyrasulfone tolerance in rice.
RESULTS: Here, we identify and func

Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and methyl salicylate (MeSA) are important signaling molecules that induce plant defense against insect herbivores and microbial pathogens. We tested the hypothesis that allelopathy is an inducible defense mechanism, and that the JA and SA signaling pathways may activate allelochemicals release. Exogenous application of MeJA and MeSA to rice (Oryza sativa L.) enhanced rice allelopathic potential and led to accumulation of phenolics, an increase in enzymatic activities, and gene transcription of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H), two key

BACKGROUND: Traditional ethnobotanical knowledge remains a vital healthcare resource, especially in rural areas of Pakistan. However, rapid modernization and the migration of younger generations threaten the preservation of this indigenous heritage, creating a critical gap for documentation in unexplored regions. While numerous studies exist across Pakistan, the unique floristic diversity of Daulat Nagar situated between the Jhelum and Chenab Rivers, needs to be documented.
METHODS: Field surveys were conducted across five villages in Daulat Nagar, using purposive and snowball sampling to int

Pulsed electric field (PEF) technology is a non-chemical approach with potential to control soilborne agricultural pests. PEF disrupts cellular membranes through short, high-energy electrical pulses. Treatment efficacy depends on electric field strength, pulse frequency, and applicator design. Field strength reflects the intensity of the electric field driving electroporation, whereas energy density represents the cumulative dose delivered to the system, and pulse frequency determines how that dose is distributed over time. In this study, two soil-applied PEF applicators, vertical pins (VP) an

On the basis of the structures of natural methylxanthines and chalcone, a series of novel chalcone analogues containing a methylxanthine moiety, Ia-Ig, and their N-acyl pyrazoline derivatives IIa-IIz and IIaa-IIaf were synthesized and identified through melting points, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. The single crystal of compound IId was obtained, which further illustrated the structural characteristics of the methylxanthine-acylpyrazoline compounds. The biological tests showed that some of them displayed favorable insecticidal activities toward Plutella xylostella L. and were superior to the natu
