Echocardiography (Echo) has a primary role in the evaluation of cardiac valve regurgitation. Echo valve regurgitation assessment includes multiple qualitative and quantitative methods which require adequate image quality, comprehensive echocardiographic images and precise measurements to obtain accurate assessment. For patient management, it is also important to investigate the mechanism of valve regurgitation. Severity and mechanism of valve regurgitation determine whether continued medical follow up is optimal or surgical or percutaneous valve repair, or replacement option should be necessar

The main mission statement of the European Association of Echocardiography (EAE) is 'to promote excellence in clinical diagnosis, research, technical development, and education in cardiovascular ultrasound in Europe'. As competence and quality control issues are increasingly recognized by patients, physicians, and payers, the EAE has established recommendations for training, competence, and quality improvement in echocardiography. The purpose of this document is to provide the requirements for training and competence in echocardiography, to outline the principles of quality measurement, and to

The Valsalva maneuver is an easily performed maneuver with an interesting hemodynamic effect which can be used to aid accurate echocardiographic diagnosis. However, correct adequate performance is often missed. Here, we aim to describe the performance of an adequate Valsalva maneuver and the correct interpretation of its effect. The Valsalva hemodynamic effect consists of four basic phases which can be used in echocardiography to yield an accurate diagnosis. Valsalva is used to decrease preload and provoke left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) gradient in dynamic LVOT obstruction. In addition,

Echocardiography is currently a widely available imaging technique that can provide useful data in the field of sports cardiology particularly in two areas: pre-participation screening and analysis of the cardiac adaptation induced by exercise. The application of pre-participation screening and especially, the type and number of used diagnostic tests remains controversial. Echocardiography has shown though, higher sensitivity and specificity as compared to the ECG, following a protocol adapted to athletes focused on ruling out the causes of sudden death and the most common disorders in this po

Transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) allows imaging of the heart through the oesophagus using a special transducer mounted on a modified endoscope. The proximity to the heart and minimal intervening structures enables the acquisition of high-resolution images that are consistently superior to routine transthoracic echocardiography and optimal imaging of the heart base anatomy and related structures. TEE provides high-quality real-time imaging free of ionizing radiation, making it an ideal instrument not only for diagnostic purposes, but also for monitoring surgical or minimally invasive car

Echocardiography plays an important role in emergency medicine because this non-invasive method is universally available and provides crucial diagnostic findings for acute decision making. The cardiac etiology in the presence of acute chest pain, acute dyspnea, hemodynamic instability or shock, new heart murmurs, chest trauma, peripheral embolism and cardiac arrest can be determined by echocardiography in the emergency scenario. The analysis of left ventricular function documents myocardial ischemia and myocardial infarction. Analysis of right ventricular function documents right heart infarct

Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) broadens the spectrum of echocardiographic techniques. Modern 10F sector echocardiographic catheters introduced into the right atrium allow high quality imaging of all cardiac structures, including pulse and continuous wave Doppler and/or color Doppler. The main indication for ICE appears to be monitoring of catheter ablation of complex arrhythmic substrates such atrial fibrillation, postincisional tachycardias and ventricular tachycardias. The other important role of ICE is the early diagnosis and prevention of complications during ablation procedures. Thes

Beyond evaluating physiologic alterations encountered during pregnancy quantitative pulsed- and continuous Doppler and qualitative color Doppler technology can be used for cardiovascular assessment of the pregnant woman with heart disease or suspected cardiac abnormality. Echocardiography provides information about disease etiology, leads to accurate and non- invasive assessment of disease severity and is a powerful means of monitoring progression. Only with echocardiography it has been clearly demonstrated that during pregnancy congenital heart disease is the first leading abnormality followe

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Echocardiography has been used perioperatively as an important diagnostic tool since the 1980s. Introduction of this new technique has been beneficial to our practice, but has also introduced questions and issues related to methods of teaching, requirements for demonstration of competence and testing and certification processes as evidence of satisfactory completion of necessary learning parameters. This article will review the issues presented to date, how they have been addressed, and what options could be arriving in the future.
RECENT FINDINGS: The introduction of Adult

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The past year was dominated by developments in echocardiographic assessment of myocardial function in children, and this paper reviews some of these major advancements in pediatric echocardiography as a guide to those interested in imaging of the pediatric heart and vascular system.
RECENT FINDINGS: Characterization of myocardial function using Doppler tissue imaging, both in the normal child and in the child with congenital or acquired heart disease, was a primary focus of pediatric echocardiographic investigation. Other new technologies, including integrated backscatter a

The potential utility of the echocardiography in the assessment and management of patients in the emergency room is wide-ranging and encompasses the spectrum of cardiac problems encountered in clinical cardiology. We describe the utility of the technique in the evaluation of patients with pericardial effusion; cardiac tamponade; and also in intracardiac thrombus.

The high prevalence of coronary artery disease in western countries has led to the development of non-invasive methods for the detection of myocardial ischemia, notably stress echocardiography (SE). We began our experience in SE in January 1999, 2326 consecutive SE studies being performed up to December 3rd 2001. The mode of stress used was: exercise in 1146 patients (pts); dobutamine in 1117 pts; dipyridamole in 35 pts; permanent pacing in 28 pts; hyperventilation in 4 pts. Eight (0.3%) significant complications occurred during these exams in this period. During exercise stress echocardiograp

The advances in Doppler echocardiography, like last year, concern the technology, the indications and the description of the natural history of cardiovascular diseases. The year 2000 will be remembered for the development of portable echocardiographs with two-dimensional and Doppler capabilities but without M mode, pulsed or continuous Doppler. These instruments weigh less than 3 kg and may be used at the bedside; however, problems of training personnel, reimbursement and availability of equipment remain. Myocardial contrast echocardiography has been the subject of many publications which vali

BACKGROUND: Stress echocardiography is an established clinical testing method and is accurate for the detection of coronary artery disease. Despite its widespread use, the safety of stress echocardiography has not been sufficiently documented in Japanese laboratories.
OBJECTIVES: The feasibility, safety, complications and side effects of stress echocardiography were assessed for detecting myocardial ischemia in patients with suspected coronary artery disease.
METHODS: 1,866 patients who underwent dobutamine echocardiography(n = 897), exercise echocardiography(n = 722), and dipyridamole echoc

Exertion symptoms occur frequently in subjects with hyperthyroidism. Using stress echocardiography, exercise capacity and global left ventricular function can be assessed noninvasively. To evaluate stress-induced changes in cardiovascular function, 42 patients with untreated thyrotoxicosis were examined using exercise echocardiography. Studies were performed during hyperthyroidism, after treatment with propranolol, and after restoration of euthyroidism. Twenty-two healthy subjects served as controls. Ergometry was performed with patients in a semisupine position using a continuous ramp protoco

Echocardiography is the technique most used in the diagnosis of aortic dissection. In this article the echocardiographic signs of aortic dissection are described. The following issues regarding the usefulness of echocardiography in aortic dissection are reviewed as well: detection of entry site, distinction between false and true lumen, assessment of aortic regurgitation, ventricular function, aortic branches involvement, pericardial effusion and follow-up.
