In this communication we present a Doppler-echocardiographic investigation on two cases of cor triatriatum. The echocardiographic features and the pulsed Doppler findings, which have not been published previously, are also discussed. When the Doppler sample volume is positioned in the distal camera of the left atrium from apical projections, a positive systolic flow is obtained. This study reports the role of Doppler ultrasound during exercise for assessment of patients with mitral stenosis. Doppler echocardiography was performed at rest and during symptom-limited supine bicycle exercise in ten patients with isolated mitral stenosis. The incidence and severity of Doppler-detected tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and associated clinical variables was studied in 20 patients who underwent cardiac transplantation. The pulsed Doppler principle enables us to study the bloodflow velocity at specific points in the heart and great vessels. In such aorto-pulmonary connections as patent ductus arteriosus, aorto-pulmonary window and truncus arteriosus the bloodflow velocity patterns are typical of the malformation. Based on knowledge of these abnormal flow patterns the diagnoses of these malformations can be made.
