Evolution of the hypoxia-sensitive cells involved in amniote respiratory reflexes.

An unintended consequence of wind energy generation is bat fatalities caused by wind turbine blade strikes. One potential approach to reduce collision risk is to use ultrasound to create an uncomfortable or disorienting airspace around wind turbine blades. Ultrasonic deterrents (UDs) have produced mixed results in experimental field studies at commercial wind energy facilities, with effectiveness varying by species and location. It is possible that some species can alter their normal echolocation characteristics to counter the signal of UDs. Our broad objective was to maximize the effectivenes

Aerial hawking in a gleaning specialist bat (Trachops cirrhosus) does not involve a high-resolution buzz.

Aerial-hawking bats adjust their biosonar in the search, approach and capture phases of echolocation to guide aerial prey interception. Some bat species have secondarily evolved a gleaning strategy that relies on passive acoustic cues to detect and capture prey on vegetation. Here, we tested the hypothesis that such a gleaning specialist, the fringe-lipped bat, Trachops cirrhosus, must use stereotyped aerial-hunting echolocation phases, including a buzz when opportunistically capturing aerial prey. Using data from sound-recording tags on 8 individuals, we reject this hypothesis by showing that

Drivers of morphological evolution in the toothed whale jaw.

Toothed whales (odontocetes) emit high-frequency underwater sounds (echolocate)-an extreme and unique innovation allowing them to sense their prey and environment. Their highly specialized mandible (lower jaw) allows high-frequency sounds to be transmitted back to the inner ear. Echolocation is evident in the earliest toothed whales, but little research has focused on the evolution of mandibular form regarding this unique adaptation. Here, we use a high-density, three-dimensional geometric morphometric analysis of 100 living and extinct cetacean species spanning their ∼50-million-year evolutio

Computational fluid dynamics simulations of airflow through the nasal passages of rhinolophoid bats.

The nasal passages of bats that emit their echolocation call through their nostrils have adapted for sound emission as well as standard respiratory and olfactory functions. Rhinolophids, hipposiderids and rhinonycterids all use a high duty cycle (HDC) echolocation strategy. In this study we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate airflow through models of the nasal passages of 12 members of Rhinolophoidea, with the aim of gaining a greater insight into how differences in nasal passage anatomy and echolocation strategy influence airflow. We also aimed to gain greater insight into th

Calcification of the lower respiratory tract in relation to flight development in Jamaican fruit bats (Phyllostomidae, Artibeus jamaicensis).

The production of echolocation calls in bats along with forces produced by contraction of thoracic musculature used in flight presumably puts relatively high mechanical loads on the lower respiratory tract (LRT). Thus, there are likely adaptations to prevent collapse or distortion of the bronchial tree and trachea during flight in echolocating bats. By clearing and staining (Alcian blue and Alizarin red) LRTs removed from nonvolant neonates, semivolant juveniles, volant subadults, and adult Jamaican fruit bats (Artibeus jamaicensis), I found that calcification of the tracheal, primary bronchia

Aural localization of silent objects by active human biosonar: neural representations of virtual echo-acoustic space.

Some blind humans have developed the remarkable ability to detect and localize objects through the auditory analysis of self-generated tongue clicks. These echolocation experts show a corresponding increase in 'visual' cortex activity when listening to echo-acoustic sounds. Echolocation in real-life settings involves multiple reflections as well as active sound production, neither of which has been systematically addressed. We developed a virtualization technique that allows participants to actively perform such biosonar tasks in virtual echo-acoustic space during magnetic resonance imaging (M

Adaptations for Substrate Gleaning in Bats: The Pallid Bat as a Case Study.

Substrate gleaning is a foraging strategy in which bats use a mixture of echolocation, prey-generated sounds, and vision to localize and hunt surface-dwelling prey. Many substrate-gleaning species depend primarily on prey-generated noise to hunt. Use of echolocation is limited to general orientation and obstacle avoidance. This foraging strategy involves a different set of selective pressures on morphology, behavior, and auditory system organization of bats compared to the use of echolocation for both hunting and navigation. Gleaning likely evolved to hunt in cluttered environments and/or as a

Functional microanatomy of nasal turbinals in bats.

Nasal turbinals are scrolled or folded internal nasal bones. In bats, prior work suggests turbinal anatomy is simplified in association with laryngeal echolocation (especially nasal emitting bats) and in association with insectivory. Using histology and iodine-enhanced micro-computed tomography, we examined a sample of 83 adult bats (54 species) to test these hypotheses more broadly across Chiroptera. Compared to bats that lack the capacity for laryngeal echolocation (i.e., Pteropodidae), all echolocating bats lack some of the more peripheral turbinals (e.g., interturbinals), and many lack at

Neural oscillations in the fronto-striatal network predict vocal output in bats.

The ability to vocalize is ubiquitous in vertebrates, but neural networks underlying vocal control remain poorly understood. Here, we performed simultaneous neuronal recordings in the frontal cortex and dorsal striatum (caudate nucleus, CN) during the production of echolocation pulses and communication calls in bats. This approach allowed us to assess the general aspects underlying vocal production in mammals and the unique evolutionary adaptations of bat echolocation. Our data indicate that before vocalization, a distinctive change in high-gamma and beta oscillations (50-80 Hz and 12-30 Hz, r

Sex Differences in Cochlear Transcriptomes in Horseshoe Bats.

Sexual dimorphism of calls is common in animals, whereas studies on the molecular basis underlying this phenotypic variation are still scarce. In this study, we used comparative transcriptomics of cochlea to investigate the sex-related difference in gene expression and alternative splicing in four Rhinolophus taxa. Based on 31 cochlear transcriptomes, we performed differential gene expression (DGE) and alternative splicing (AS) analyses between the sexes in each taxon. Consistent with the degree of difference in the echolocation pulse frequency between the sexes across the four taxa, we identi

Cochlear representation of wideband biosonar sounds and the emergence of neural oscillations.

Echolocating big brown bats and bottlenose dolphins broadcast wideband ultrasonic echolocation calls in the baseband to sense their surroundings. Even though these species inhabit different media and emit echolocation calls with different spectra, both show similar perceptual acuity: They determine target range from echo delay, they detect changes in echo delay on a microsecond scale, and they perceive ultrasonic phase. These perceptual performances are too acute to understand on the basis of single neuron responses, and even neural population responses do not reach the required behavioral val

Spatial perception and adaptive sonar behavior.

Bat echolocation is a dynamic behavior that allows for real-time adaptations in the timing and spectro-temporal design of sonar signals in response to a particular task and environment. To enable detailed, quantitative analyses of adaptive sonar behavior, echolocation call design was investigated in big brown bats, trained to rest on a stationary platform and track a tethered mealworm that approached from a starting distance of about 170 cm in the presence of a stationary sonar distracter. The distracter was presented at different angular offsets and distances from the bat. The results of this

Sound-evoked efferent effects on cochlear mechanics of the mustached bat.

The influence of the crossed medial efferent system on cochlear mechanics of the mustached bat was tested by measuring delayed evoked otoacoustic emissions (DEOAEs), cochlear microphonics, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions. Contralaterally delivered sinusoids, broadband noise and bat echolocation calls were used for acoustic stimulation of the efferent system. With all four measures we found a level-dependent suppression under stimulation with both broadband noise and echolocation calls. In addition, the sharply tuned cochlear resona

Ecomorphological correlates of inner and middle ear anatomy within phyllostomid bats.

Echolocation is the primary sense used by most bats to navigate their environment. However, the influence of echolocating behaviors upon the morphology of the auditory apparatus remains largely uninvestigated. While it is known that middle ear ossicle size scales positively with body mass across mammals, and that peak call frequency scales negatively with body mass among bats, there are still large gaps in our understanding of the degree to which allometry or ecology influences the morphology of the chiropteran auditory apparatus. To investigate this, we used μCT datasets to quantify three mor

On the sequence heterochrony of cranial ossification of bats in light of Haeckel's recapitulation theory.

Haeckel's recapitulation theory has been a controversial topic in evolutionary biology. However, we have seen some recent cases applying Haeckel's view to interpret the interspecific variation of prenatal ontogeny. To revisit the validity of Haeckel's recapitulation theory, we take bats that have undergone drastic morphological changes and possess a characteristic ecology as a case study. All members of Rhinolophoidea and Yangochiroptera can generate an ultrasonic pulse from the larynx to interpret surrounding objects (laryngeal echolocation) whereas Pteropodidae lacks such ability. It is know

Broadband noise exposure does not affect hearing sensitivity in big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus).

In many vertebrates, exposure to intense sounds under certain stimulus conditions can induce temporary threshold shifts that reduce hearing sensitivity. Susceptibility to these hearing losses may reflect the relatively quiet environments in which most of these species have evolved. Echolocating big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) live in extremely intense acoustic environments in which they navigate and forage successfully, both alone and in company with other bats. We hypothesized that bats may have evolved a mechanism to minimize noise-induced hearing losses that otherwise could impair natural

Greater Mouse-Tailed Bats Glide During Approximately 50% of Their Flight.

Flapping flight is widely regarded as a mechanically complex and energetically demanding mode of locomotion. In bats, the evolution of flapping flight is hypothesized to have arisen from gliding, an unpowered form of aerial movement. Although intermittent flap-gliding flight is considered advantageous in many bird species, this flight strategy has rarely been studied in bats. In this study, we used on-board tracking devices and audio recordings to characterize the flight behavior and corresponding echolocation of greater mouse-tailed bats (Rhinopoma microphyllum) in the wild. Our results revea

Cerebellar activity predicts vocalization in fruit bats.

Echolocating bats exhibit remarkable auditory behaviors, enabled by adaptations both within and outside their auditory system. Yet research on echolocating bats has focused mostly on brain areas that belong to the classic ascending auditory pathway. This study provides direct evidence linking the cerebellum, an evolutionarily ancient and non-classic auditory structure, to vocalization and hearing. We report that in the fruit-eating bat Carollia perspicillata, external sounds can evoke cerebellar responses with latencies below 20 ms. Such fast responses are indicative of early inputs to the bat

The detection of 'virtual' objects using echoes by humans: Spectral cues.

Some blind people use echoes to detect discrete, silent objects to support their spatial orientation/navigation, independence, safety and wellbeing. The acoustical features that people use for this are not well understood. Listening to changes in spectral shape due to the presence of an object could be important for object detection and avoidance, especially at short range, although it is currently not known whether it is possible with echolocation-related sounds. Bands of noise were convolved with recordings of binaural impulse responses of objects in an anechoic chamber to create 'virtual ob

The spatial context of free-ranging Hawaiian spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) producing acoustic signals.

To improve our understanding of how dolphins use acoustic signals in the wild, a three-hydrophone towed array was used to investigate the spatial occurrence of Hawaiian spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) relative to each other as they produced whistles, burst pulses, and echolocation clicks. Groups of approximately 30 to 60 animals were recorded while they traveled and socialized in nearshore waters off Oahu, Hawaii. Signaling animals were localized using time of arrival difference cues on the three channels. Sequences of whistles occurred between dolphins separated by significantly grea
