Psychometric properties of a daily obsessive-compulsive symptom scale for ecological momentary assessment.

Despite growing interest in ecological momentary assessment (EMA) in psychopathology and clinical observation of day-to-day fluctuations in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, there is not a standardized EMA measure of such symptoms that can guide systematic research. In the absence of such a measure, prior EMA research in OCD has utilized heterogeneous approaches to sampling momentary and daily OCD symptoms, which limits the ability to compare results between studies. The present study sought to examine the psychometric properties of a daily OCD symptom (d-OCS) measure that assesses

Real-life self-control conflicts in anorexia nervosa: An ecological momentary assessment investigation.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) are often thought to show heightened self-control and increased ability to inhibit desires. In addition to inhibitory self-control, antecedent-focused strategies (e.g., cognitive reconstrual-the re-evaluation of tempting situations) might contribute to disorder maintenance and enable disorder-typical, maladaptive behaviors. METHODS: Over a period of 14 days, 40 acutely underweight young female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 40 healthy control (HC) participants reported their affect and behavior in self-control situations via ecologic

Potential benefits of using ecological momentary assessment to study high-risk polydrug use.

BACKGROUND: While studies have documented both the feasibility and acceptability of using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to study drug use, there is little empirical research assessing participants' perceptions of utilizing this technology-driven approach. METHODS: Participants were English-speaking persons ≥18 years old who reported injection drug use and sequential (e.g., alcohol followed by opioid use) or simultaneous (i.e., injecting heroin and cocaine in one shot) polydrug use within 30 days recruited in San Diego, CA and Philadelphia, PA. Participants (N=36) completed two cell ph

Daily emotional dynamics in depressed youth: a cell phone ecological momentary assessment study.

This study used a new cell phone ecological momentary assessment approach to investigate daily emotional dynamics in 47 youths with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 32 no-psychopathology controls (CON) (ages 7-17 years). Information about emotional experience in the natural environment was obtained using answer-only cell phones, while MDD youths received an 8-week course of cognitive behavioral therapy and/or psychopharmacological treatment. Compared with CON youths, MDD youths reported more intense and labile global negative affect; greater sadness, anger, and nervousness; and a lower rati

Cell phones for ecological momentary assessment with cocaine-addicted homeless patients in treatment.

This is the first study to examine whether cell phones could be used to collect ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data with homeless crack cocaine-addicted adults in treatment. The study adapted an EMA method to examine behavior in real time using cell phones and computer-automated telephone interviewing. Participants treated in an intensive outpatient treatment program were given cell phones for a 2-week period to record current states of cocaine craving and using episodes. Results showed cell phone technology could reliably deliver a computerized survey; this homeless population would us

Predictors of momentary emotion differentiation among veterans in residential treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Emotion differentiation refers to the specificity with which people describe their emotional experiences. Low emotion differentiation has been linked to affective disorders but understudied in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), despite a wide range of symptoms representing affective dysregulation (e.g., avoidance of trauma-related emotions). Additionally, although emotion differentiation is conceptualized as a skill that may improve with mental health treatment, it has been primarily studied as a trait rather than momentary construct, limiting opportunities to understand contextual factors.

Assessing repetitive negative thinking in daily life: Development of an ecological momentary assessment paradigm.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic process and a promising target for prevention and treatment of mental disorders. RNT is typically assessed via self-report questionnaires with most studies focusing on one type of RNT (i.e., worry or rumination) and one specific disorder (i.e., anxiety or depression). However, responses to such questionnaires may be biased by memory and metacognitive beliefs. Recently, Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) has been employed to minimize these biases. This study aims to develop an EMA paradigm to measure RNT as a transdiagnostic process in

Does ecological momentary assessment work in mid and late life and for whom?

BACKGROUND: During late adulthood, mental health symptoms fluctuate daily which may be overlooked by traditional periodic assessments. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) enables frequent symptom monitoring, informing timely interventions. However, older adults may encounter challenges with EMA completion, including lower digital literacy and age-related cognitive decline, which may be exacerbated by depressive symptoms. The present study advances our understanding of EMA feasibility in late life by investigating engagement over an extended period and identifying predictors of feasibility.

Understanding adherence to the recording of ecological momentary assessments in the example of tinnitus monitoring.

The recording of Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMA) can assist people with chronic diseases in monitoring their health state. However, many users quickly lose interest in their respective EMA platforms. Therefore, we studied the adherence of users of the mHealth app TRACKYOURTINNITUS (TYT). The app is used to record EMA in people with tinnitus. 1292 users, who interacted with the app between April 2014 and February 2017, were analyzed in this work. We defined "adherence" based on the dimensions of interaction duration and interaction continuity. We propose methods that are able to predict

Towards Optimized Awake Bruxism Metrics: Empirical Definition of Minimal Ecological Momentary Assessment Requirements.

BACKGROUND: Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is increasingly used to assess awake bruxism (AB) in real time. However, current protocols typically require 7 days of monitoring and high daily response rates, potentially limiting compliance. OBJECTIVES: To empirically establish the shortest monitoring duration and daily response threshold that still yield reliable estimates of AB behaviours through smartphone-based EMA. METHODS: Data from three EMA studies were pooled, yielding 327 participants who completed smartphone-based monitoring. Five core AB behaviours (relaxed jaw muscles, bracing

Dietary self-monitoring versus ecological momentary assessment in measuring and characterizing dietary lapses.

Dietary lapses in behavioral weight loss (BWL) programs, i.e., non-adherence to the dietary prescription, impede weight loss. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA; brief, repeated surveys) has many strengths in measuring lapses, but may underestimate lapse frequency and does not easily capture lapses' nutritional make-up. Dietary self-monitoring may offer benefits over EMA in measuring lapses, though this remains unstudied. We hypothesized EMA would underestimate lapses relative to dietary self-monitoring, and dietary self-monitoring would reveal lapses were associated with higher calories, hi

Proximal contributors to suicide risk in college students: A multidimensional ecological momentary assessment.

Given the increasing prevalence of suicide risk among young adults, identifying proximal risk factors remains a key challenge. Traditional approaches focusing on distal predictors provide limited insight into short-term fluctuations in risk. The present study examined whether daily variations in sleep, physical activity, and physiological arousal, in interaction with positive and negative life events, were associated with short-term changes in suicide risk. A sample of 104 university students completed an 8-day ecological momentary assessment protocol with four daily prompts assessing suicide

Association Between Suicidal Ideation and Negative Affect: 6-Month Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a major public health challenge. Traditional assessments of suicidal thoughts and behaviors rely on retrospective measures that are subject to recall bias and show limited predictive accuracy. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) can improve suicide risk assessment by capturing real-time information in participants' natural environments. However, EMA burden often results in short follow-up periods. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between suicidal ideation (SI) and multiple variables collected in real time using smartphone-based EMA over 6 months,

Expected breathlessness is overestimated compared to experienced: a mobile ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic breathlessness is common and often leads to avoidance of symptom-provoking activities. Expectations of breathlessness influence behaviour and symptom perception, but the accuracy of these expectations remains unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between expected and experienced breathlessness, the moderating role of mental states, determinants of expectation accuracy and the influence of recent symptoms on future expectations. METHODS: In this longitudinal study, 83 participants with chronic breathlessness rated expected and experien

Post-Meal Activity and Eating Disorder Behaviors: An Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) Study.

OBJECTIVE: Mealtimes are associated with heightened distress among individuals with eating disorders (EDs) and are frequently accompanied by ritualized eating behaviors that maintain psychopathology. In inpatient settings, post-meal rest is commonly prescribed to prevent compensatory behaviors. Yet, enforced inactivity may exacerbate anxiety and ritual engagement. This study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine whether structured light post-meal activity is associated with a reduced likelihood of ritualized eating behaviors in an inpatient ED sample. METHOD: Participants were

Ecological momentary assessment of weight-related stress predicting eating disorder and affective symptoms.

Weight-related stress (e.g., experiencing weight stigmatization) is an important factor that contributes to engagement in maladaptive eating behaviors and increased risk for mood and anxiety disorders. Forty-nine adults that met the criteria for binge-eating disorder and/or food addiction completed baseline questionnaires and a 10-day ecological momentary assessment protocol during which they reported experiences of weight-related stress, binge-eating symptoms, dietary restraint, body satisfaction, and negative affect throughout the day. Generalized linear mixed models were used to examine ass

Tinnitus Measured in Everyday Life: A Literature Review of Ecological Momentary Assessment Studies.

Tinnitus, a common auditory phenomenon, often presents with considerable between-person heterogeneity and within-person fluctuations. To understand the pathophysiological mechanisms and advance patient-centred care, it is essential to recognise these variations. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is a (close-to) real-time data collection method that offers insights into short- and long-term fluctuations of subjective symptoms and their interaction with psychological, environmental, and physiological factors. EMA applied in tinnitus research has shown promise in capturing the nuances of tinn
