Social, economic, and political factors in progress towards improving child survival in developing nations.

Child mortality is a persistent health problem faced by developing nations. In 2000 the United Nations (UN) established a set of high priority goals to address global problems of poverty and health, the Millennium Development Goals, which address extreme poverty, hunger, primary education, child mortality, maternal health, infectious diseases, environmental sustainability, and partnerships for development. Goal 4 aims to reduce by two thirds, between 2000 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate in developing countries. In sub-Saharan Africa from 2000 to 2006 these rates have only been reduced

Influence of socio-economic and demographic factors in determining breathing patterns: a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: Breathing represents one of the vital functions of the organism, and its unbalance causes some series of alterations in several organs and systems. AIM: Verify the influence of socio-economic and demographic factors in determining breathing patterns. STUDY DESIGN: cross-sectional. MATERIALS AND METHODS: there were 143 students in the sample, with ages ranging from 9 and 10 years, from two schools, public and private, in the city of Recife, Pernambuco. Breathing patterns were established through two tests: Glatzel Plate (Steam) and water time in the mouth. Socio-economic factors

Socio-economic and occupational risk factors for gastric cancer: a cohort study in Sweden.

The effects of socio-economic/occupational factors on gastric cancer at various subsites (including corpus, cardia and unspecified cancers) are not well known. To investigate this issue, we carried out a follow-up study on the economically active Swedish population, based on the Swedish Family-Cancer Database. We calculated standardized incidence ratios and 95% confidence intervals for different occupational groups, adjusted for age, period, region and socio-economic status. The reference group was all the economically active population. Manual workers and farmers were at an increased risk of

Unraveling the Influence of Social, Economic, and Demographic Factors in Texas on Breast Cancer Survival.

BACKGROUND: According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. Affected people are financially challenged due to the high out-of-pocket cost of breast cancer treatment, as it is the most expensive treatment. Using a 16-year cohort study of breast cancer survival data in Texas, we investigate the factors that might explain why some breast cancer patients live longer than others. METHODS: Performing a survival analysis consisting of the log-rank test, a survival time regression, and Cox proportional hazards regres

Factors associated with suicidal intent in economically active patients diagnosed with major depression.

INTRODUCTION: Every 40s, one person in the world commits suicide. As such, suicide is considered a public health problem, and prior suicide attempt is one of the risk factors associated with completed suicide. Despite the strategies implemented and the studies carried out, in Colombia suicide figures are on the rise, more markedly in the economically active population. OBJECTIVE: To identify the sociodemographic, family, personal, economic and religious factors associated with suicide attempt in patients of productive age (18-62 years old) in a mental health institution in Bogota, Colombia.

Impacts of environmental and socio-economic factors on emergence and epidemic potential of Ebola in Africa.

Recent outbreaks of animal-borne emerging infectious diseases have likely been precipitated by a complex interplay of changing ecological, epidemiological and socio-economic factors. Here, we develop modelling methods that capture elements of each of these factors, to predict the risk of Ebola virus disease (EVD) across time and space. Our modelling results match previously-observed outbreak patterns with high accuracy, and suggest further outbreaks could occur across most of West and Central Africa. Trends in the underlying drivers of EVD risk suggest a 1.75 to 3.2-fold increase in the endemi

Achilles Tendon Repairs: Identification of Risk Factors for and Economic Impact of Complications and Reoperation.

BACKGROUND: Compared with nonoperative management, Achilles tendon repair is associated with increased rates of complications and increased initial healthcare cost. However, data are currently lacking on the risk factors for these complications and the added healthcare cost associated with common preoperative comorbidities. HYPOTHESIS: Identify the independent risk factors for complications and reoperation after acute Achilles tendon repair and calculate the added cost of care associated with having each preoperative risk factor. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:

Social, political, and economic factors responsible for the reemergence of trichinellosis in Serbia: a case study.

Over the past decade, eastern Europe has experienced a resurgence of trichinellosis. A recent outbreak in Serbia, Yugoslavia, from December 2001 to January 2002, involving 309 people, revealed many of the causes for this reemergence. Epidemiological investigations indicate that the immediate cause of the recent outbreak was the consumption of smoked sausages produced by a small slaughterhouse or meat processor. However, failure of in-house meat inspection procedures and quality assurance as well as oversight by official veterinary control were also responsible. Further analysis of this breakdo

The relation of early nutrition, infections and socio-economic factors to the development of childhood diabetes.

The relationship of development of diabetes from birth up to 15 years of age to the type of feeding in infancy, childhood infections and vaccination was studied in 55 patients attending Endocrinology Clinics of the Ethio-Swedish Children's and Tikur Anbessa Hospitals over a period of two years (January 1990 to December 1991). Seventy-four unaffected siblings and 107 unrelated controls were interviewed for comparison. No significant difference was found in relation to type of feeding up to the ages of three, six and 12 months or older between patients and unaffected siblings. Histories of measl

Exploring socio-economic, biochemical, and genetic factors influencing thyroid status in Indian school-going adolescents.

Thyroid hormones are central to regulating metabolism, growth, and development, yet their complex interactions with socioeconomic, metabolic, and genetic factors remain understudied in diverse populations. We compared thyroid profiles - free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in Indian adolescents with anthropometric traits, metabolic markers, and socioeconomic status (SES). We observed that adolescents from higher SES backgrounds exhibited greater metabolic dysregulation, altered thyroid profiles, and abnormalities in lipid and adipokine levels

Climate and socio-economic factors drive the spatio-temporal dynamics of HFRS in Northeastern China.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) occurs widely in Northeastern China, but the mechanism and interactions of meteorological and socio-economic factors on the transmission of HFRS are still largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: We explored the effects of socioeconomic-environmental factors on the spatio-temporal variation of HFRS incidence from 2001 to 2019 in Northeastern China. Specifically, the relative importance and contribution rates (CR) of determinants of HFRS were identified by boosted regression tree and variance partitioning analysis, respectively. Estimation of Ebola's spillover infection exposure in Sierra Leone based on sociodemographic and economic factors.

Zoonotic diseases spread through pathogens-infected animal carriers. In the case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), evidence supports that the main carriers are fruit bats and non-human primates. Further, EVD spread is a multi-factorial problem that depends on sociodemographic and economic (SDE) factors. Here we inquire into this phenomenon and aim at determining, quantitatively, the Ebola spillover infection exposure map and try to link it to SDE factors. To that end, we designed and conducted a survey in Sierra Leone and implement a pipeline to analyze data using regression and machine learning t

Gestational age, kindergarten-level literacy, and effect modification by maternal socio-economic and demographic factors.

BACKGROUND: Shorter gestational age at birth is associated with worse academic performance in childhood. Socio-economic and demographic factors that affect a child's development may modify the relationship between gestational age and later academic performance. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate socio-economic and demographic effect modification of gestational age's association with kindergarten-level literacy skills in a longitudinal Wisconsin birth cohort. METHODS: We sampled 153 145 singleton births (2007-2010) that linked to Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening-
