Successful surgical repair of congenital total cleft sternum with partial ectopia cordis.

Total bifid sternum with or without ectopia cordis is a rare congenital anomaly which is treated successfully in a limited number of cases. Several methods of correction have been described using tissue grafts (cartilage, bone), inert artificial prostheses (acrylic plaques, marlex mesh), and techniques to approximate the sternal bands by relaxation of costal cartilages. In our case the method described by Verska was used to approximate the bifid sternal bands. The successful result in our patient proves the efficiency of this technique.

Clinical and Surgical Perspectives on Isolated Thoracic Ectopia Cordis: A Rare Case Report.

Ectopia cordis is an exceptionally uncommon congenital condition where the heart develops outside its normal position due to incomplete closure of the ventral chest wall during embryogenesis. The anomaly may occur in isolation or with other structural defects, often resulting in a poor prognosis despite advancements in medical and surgical care. This report discusses a preterm neonate delivered at 33 weeks of gestation following an uneventful pregnancy in a dizygotic twin gestation. The neonate, diagnosed with thoracic ectopia cordis, displayed respiratory distress at birth but showed no signi

Ectopia Cordis Sternal Cleft Repair With Mandibular Distractors: A Follow-Up Case Report.

A neonate with thoracic ectopia cordis presented following an uncomplicated delivery. A mandibular distractor was placed to bridge the sternal cleft and retracted (reverse distractor activation) over 24 days to facilitate sternal closure. Follow-up at five years postoperatively demonstrated a well-healed sternum. This novel approach to ectopia cordis repair facilitates slow, steady physiologic accommodation of the heart without hemodynamic instability or long-term complications.

Cardiac anomalies in Cantrell's pentalogy: From ventricular diverticulum to complete thoracic ectopia cordis.

Cantrell's pentalogy is a very rare syndrome associating varying degrees of midline wall defects and congenital cardiac anomalies. It is characterized by a combination of five anomalies that are: a midline supra umbilical abdominal wall defect, a sternal defect, an anterior diaphragmatic defect, a diaphragmatic pericardial defect and a congenital intra cardiac defect. Ectopia cordis, defined as a developmental defect in which the heart is abnormally located partially or totally outside the thorax, is in some cases a part of this syndrome. We report two cases of Cantrell's pentalogy in which ca

Ectopia cordis in an adult patient with COVID-19: A case report and literature review.

Ectopia cordis (EC) is a rare congenital condition characterized by a partial or complete defect of the anterior chest wall. It is associated with ventricular and atrial septal defects (ASD), Ebstein's anomaly, truncus arteriosus, transposition of the great vessels, tetralogy of Fallot, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. This study aimed to explore the cardiac manifestations of EC complicated by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A 23-year-old male, born with EC, was admitted to the hospital for acute cough and fever. The patient was diagnosed with EC and ASD by computed tomography and COV

A Baby Born with Ectopia Cordis, Omphalocele, Cleft Lips and Palate: A Case Report.

Ectopia cordis is a rare congenital defect with the prevalence of 5 to 8 per million live births. Here we report a rare case of preterm female live birth with ectopia cordis associated with omphalocele, cleft lip, and palate. In this case, 14+ weeks ultrasound did not show any fetal abnormalities and parents were unaware of the condition until 35+ weeks when ultrasound detected the anomaly a few days before delivery. After delivery, they didn't give consent for further intervention which led to neonatal mortality 3 hours after birth. If the condition was diagnosed in time, an earlier intervent

Management of Pentalogy of Cantrell with complete ectopia cordis and Double Outlet Right Ventricle.

Pentalogy of Cantrell (PoC) is a rare congenital midline defect. We present a case and its treatment of PoC with complete ectopia cordis and congenital heart disease. Postnatally the congenital heart defect was surgically corrected and the ectopic heart was covered by musculous mobilized flap. Due to cephalic orientation of the heart and limited intrathoracic space, replacement of the heart into the thoracic cavity was initially not performed. After 11 years of follow up our patient now is without relevant limitations solely wearing a thoracic shelter. This case elucidates the complexity of fu

First trimester sonographic diagnosis of ectopia cordis: a case report and review of the literature.

A case of ectopia cordis (EC) with gastroschisis in a 27-year-old primigravida was diagnosed at 10(3/7) weeks of gestation. The pregnancy was terminated by suction dilatation and curettage. With the increasing use of first trimester ultrasonography, early detection of fetal abnormalities is becoming more frequent. We review other published cases of EC detected in the first trimester and discuss the possible advantages of early diagnosis including options of termination at earlier gestational ages which might decrease the physical and psychological trauma on some patients.

Ectopia cordis with multiple ventricular septal defect and sternal cleft in a newborn: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Ectopia cordis is a rare type of malformation where the heart is not located normally. It may be partially or completely located outside the thoracic cavity and can be associated with other congenital abnormalities. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report is of a 34-week- and 6-day-old female fetus with a birth weight of 2040 g, a height of 41 cm, and a head circumference of 32 cm. The initial physical examination revealed a responsive newborn with an externalized heart outside the chest, with pericardium protection. In addition, a thoracic wall defect was detected suggesting incomple

Ectopia cordis with tetralogy of Fallot in an infant with pentalogy of Cantrell: high-pitch MDCT exam.

We report the MDCT findings of a 17-month-old girl with Cantrell's pentalogy, a rare congenital disease characterized by several defects in the ventral thoracoabdominal wall including ectopia cordis, and, in this patient, associated with tetralogy of Fallot. This case provides an example of the utility of a wide volume in coverage and high-pitch MDCT scan in the evaluation of complex cardiovascular anatomy in infants with congenital heart disease without the need of an ECG-gating acquisition.

Ectopia cordis with single ventricle and a diverticulum. Exsanguination from septic necrosis of the ductus arteriosus.

An infant is described with partial ectopia cordis and a cardiac diverticulum which orignated from a single ventricle. There was associated deficiency of the lower part of the sternum and lack of pericardial tissue over the diverticulum. These anomalies form part of the midline thoraco-abdominal syndrome in which cardiac anomalies are frequent. The infant died suddenly at 17 days of age owing to haemmorhage from septic ductal necrosis, caused by ascending infection of the tissue between the diverticulum and the thoraci wall.

Thoracoabdominal wall defect with complete ectopia cordis and gastroschisis: a case report and review of the literature.

Ventral wall defects are extremely rare anomalies that are likely caused by the failure of the ventral wall to close during week 4 of development. We report a case of severe thoracoabdominal wall defect including complete thoracic ectopia cordis and gastroschisis. This combination represents a novel constellation of findings in a single patient. This unique case further demonstrates an anatomically normal heart with age-appropriate development and an intact diaphragm. We review the literature of other reports and discussions of entities that share overlapping features with this case.

Pectoralis Major and Abdominis Rectus Musculocutaneous Flap Reconstruction for Sternal Wound Closure in Ectopia Cordis.

Ectopia cordis is a rare congenital condition resulting in extrathoracic positioning of the heart. The severity of presentation may vary with partial or complete displacement through sternal or diaphragmatic defects. Operative management is typically required, but due to the rarity of the condition, no standard exists for optimal closure. Reconstruction techniques can include compound local flap placement including pectoralis major, rectus abdominis, or latissimus dorsi flaps as well as synthetic material placement, autologous bone, and cartilage grafts to correct sternal deformity. This case

Fontan operation through a right lateral thoracotomy to treat Cantrell syndrome with severe ectopia cordis.

A median sternotomy would be very difficult for Cantrell syndrome with severe ectopia cordis. For Cantrell syndrome and tricuspid atresia after left modified Blalock-Taussig shunt with severe ectopia cordis, defect in the middle and inferior portion of the sternum, and the closing of ventriculo-peritoneal shunt, we performed extracardiac total cavopulmonary connection through a right lateral thoracotomy after establishing right modified Blalock-Taussig shunt and performing coil embolization of left modified Blalock-Taussig shunt by cardiologists.
