Gnathostoma infective stage larvae in swamp eels (Fluta alba) at a metropolitan market in Bangkok, Thailand.

A total of 1,788 livers from swamp eels (Fluta alba), purchased at a market in Bangkok, Thailand, from April to July 2002, were studied for the prevalence and intensity of Gnasthostoma third stage larvae (L3s). Of all livers, 466 were infected with Gnasthostoma L3s (infection rate = 26%). The larvae recovered averaged 0.43 +/- 0.51 larvae/liver. All larvae were identified as Gnasthostoma spinigerm by morphological criteria. The prevalence of G. spinigerum L3s in the eels was much higher in the rainy season (June and July, 74%) than during April and May (8%). Therefore, prevention programs for

Resistance of eels (Gymnothorax) to the venom of sea kraits (Laticauda colubrina): a test of coevolution.

Eels of the genus Gymnothorax from the Pacific are selectively preyed upon by banded sea kraits (Laticauda colubrina) and have been reported to sustain massive doses of sea krait venom without ill effect. By contrast, the present study found that Gymnothorax moringa from the Caribbean, where no sea snakes occur, are sensitive to sea krait venom, with doses as low as 0.01 mg dry wt of venom/kg wet wt of eel resulting in signs of envenomation, and doses as small as 0.1 mg/kg proving to be lethal. These observations suggest that the resistance of Pacific Gymnothorax to sea krait venom results fro

Sensitivity of eels (Anguilla anguilla) and carp (Cyprinus carpio) to type C and E botulinum toxin.

This study has shown for the first time that fish such as eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) and carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) are sensitive to type E botulinum toxin. With oral administration the MLD for eels was 27.500 mouse LD50 per kg body weight, while for carp it was only 236 mouse LD50 per kg. Carp were also found to be sensitive to a slight degree to type C botulinum toxin, the MLD of the most virulent toxin of this type being 457,000 mouse LD50 per kg with oral administration. Eels, however, showed no sensitivity to type C toxin.

Trpv4 links environmental temperature to testicular differentiation in hermaphroditic ricefield eel.

The ricefield eel (Monopterus albus), an economically important aquaculture species in China, is a freshwater teleost fish that exhibits protogynous hermaphroditism. Although progress has been made in understanding the sex determination and differentiation of this species, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we show that warm temperature promotes gonadal transformation by up-regulating testicular differentiation genes, such as dmrt1/sox9a in ovaries. Trpv4, a Ca2+-permeable cation channel expressed in gonadal somatic cells, is highly sensitive to ambient temperature and links envir

Non-lethal detection of the invasive American eel parasite Anguillicola crassus.

The invasive species Anguillicola crassus is a nematode that infects the swimbladders of anguillid eels. Heavy, repeated infections cause the swimbladder to become thickened and scarred, which can alter swimbladder gas volume, increase energy demands of buoyancy regulation, and influence normal function. Silver-phase (sexually maturing) eels migrate up to thousands of kilometers to the Sargasso Sea to reproduce, and increased energetic requirements may be detrimental to migration and breeding success. Currently, the best practice to confirm A. crassus infection is to dissect an eel and examine

Infestation and histopathology of Anguillicola crassus in European eel in the Lake Bafa, Türkiye.

This study aimed to first detect and histopathologically confirm the Anguillicolacrassus parasite in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) from Bafa Lake in the Aegean region of Türkiye. As a result of external and internal parasitological examinations performed on 22 individuals with a weight of 42.08-1264.54 g and a length of 31.80-85.30 cm, the presence of parasites was detected. In macroscopic and microscopic examinations, the parasite A. crassus was found in the muscle, intestinal system, brain and swim bladder of the eels. The prevalence was found to be 35 %. Histological examinations confirm

Identification and stable expression of vitellogenin receptor through vitellogenesis in the European eel.

In teleosts, vitellogenin (Vtg) is a phospholipoglycoprotein synthesized by the liver, released into the blood circulation and incorporated into the oocytes via endocytosis mediated by the Vtg receptor (VTGR) to form the yolk granules. The VTGR is crucial for oocyte growth in egg-laying animals but is also present in non-oviparous vertebrates, such as human. The VTGR belongs to the low-density lipoprotein receptor superfamily (LDLR) and is also named very-low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR). In this study, we identified and phylogenetically positioned the VTGR of a basal teleost, the Euro

The European eel may tolerate multiple infections at a low biological cost.

Most animals are concurrently infected with multiple parasites, and interactions among them may influence both disease dynamics and host fitness. However, the sublethal costs of parasite infections are difficult to measure and the effects of concomitant infections with multiple parasite species on individual physiology and fitness are poorly described for wild hosts. To understand the costs of co-infection, we investigated the relationships among 189 European eel (Anguilla anguilla) from Mar Menor, parasites (richness and intensity) and eel's 'health status' (fluctuant asymmetry, splenic somat

Toxic textile dyes accumulate in wild European eel Anguilla anguilla.

Dyes are used to stain inks, paints, textile, paper, leather and household products. They are omnipresent, some are toxic and may threaten our environment, especially aquatic ecosystems. The presence of residues of sixteen dyes (triarylmethanes, xanthenes, phenothiazines and phenoxazines) and their metabolites was analyzed in muscle tissue samples of individual yellow-phased European eels (Anguilla anguilla) from 91 locations in Belgian rivers, canals and lakes sampled between 2000 and 2009 using ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Eel was contaminated by dyes in

Induced oogenesis of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) in freshwater condition.

European eel is a catadromous fish species, which means that after living in freshwater premature individuals adapt to sea water, and migrate to the Sargasso Sea for spawning. Although male eel can be sexually matured even in freshwater, to date, it was believed that female eel can be matured only in seawater. Here we show that the process of sexual maturation may be induced in freshwater by treating female eels with carp pituitary (GSI = 9.87 ± 1.55%). It is thus proposed that seawater condition is not an obligatory environment for stimulating gametogenesis and for artificial maturation of th

The mitochondrial tricarboxylate carrier of silver eel: chemical modification by sulfhydryl reagents.

The tricarboxylate (or citrate) carrier was purified from eel liver mitochondria and functionally reconstituted into liposomes. Incubation of the proteoliposomes with various sulfhydryl reagents led to inhibition of the reconstituted citrate transport activity. Preincubation of the proteoliposomes with reversible SH reagents, such as mercurials and methanethiosulfonates, protected the eel liver tricarboxylate carrier against inactivation by the irreversible reagent N-(1-pyrenyl)maleimide (PM). Citrate and L-malate, two substrates of the tricarboxylate carrier, protected the protein against ina

Ca++ regulation of paracellular permeability in the middle intestine of the eel, Anguilla anguilla.

The role of Ca++ on the regulation of the paracellular pathway permeability of the middle intestine of Anguilla anguilla was studied by measuring the transepithelial resistance and the dilution potential, generated when one half of NaCl in the mucosal solution was substituted iso-osmotically with mannitol, in various experimental conditions altering extracellular and/or intracellular calcium levels. We found that removal of Ca++ in the presence of ethylene glycol-bis(beta-aminoethyl ether) (EGTA) from both the mucosal and the serosal side, but not from one side only, reduced both the transepit

An outbreak of Salmonella blockley infections following smoked eel consumption in Germany.

In June 1998, an increased number of persons with Salmonella blockley infection were reported from one German state. Because S. blockley is extremely uncommon in Germany, a case-control study was performed in order to find the source. A total of 13 patients met the case definition. Nine of 12 cases and 2 of 21 controls with food consumption histories reported eating smoked eel (OR 28.5; 95% CI 3.9-235.3). The consumed eel came from four different local smokeries, but could be traced back to fish farms in Italy. This outbreak indicates that eel may be a vehicle for salmonella infection and that

Cardiovascular, respiratory, and blood adjustments to hypoxia in the Japanese eel,Anguilla japonica.

The cardioventilatory performance of the Japanese eel,Anguilla japonica, was evaluated during acute exposure to hypoxia. The eel became an oxygen conformer as ambient PO2 fell below the critical value of 110 mmHg. Although arterial and venous PO2 also fell progressively, the arterial O2 content remained constant down to an ambient PO2 of about 60 mmHg. Arterial blood O2 saturation was maintained at 85% even at 40 mmHg. The increase in the supply of O2 to the animal during hypoxia was due to a combination of adaptive adjustments: (1) an increase in ventilation: perfusion ratio brought about mai

Evidence for the participation of a melanin-concentrating hormone in physiological colour change in the eel.

The hormonal and nervous control of colour change in the eel has been investigated. The only bioactive forms of MSH found in eel pituitary extracts or secreted by eel pituitary cultures were forms of alpha-MSH; no beta-MSH was detected. After transfer of eels from a black to a white background, the melanin concentration in skin melanophores was accompanied by a rapid decline in plasma alpha-MSH titres. Hypophysectomy resulted in melanin concentration, and pituitary extracts injected into hypophysectomized eels caused melanin dispersion. This effect was eliminated if the pituitary extracts were

Elemental quantification using electron energy-loss spectroscopy with a low voltage scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM-EELS).

Electron beam damage in electron microscopes is becoming more and more problematic in material research with the increasing demand of characterization of new beam sensitive material such as Li based compounds used in lithium-ion batteries. To avoid radiolysis damage, it has become common practice to use Cryo-EM, however, knock-on damage can still occur in conventional TEM/STEM with a high-accelerating voltage (200-300 keV). In this work, electron energy loss spectroscopy with an accelerating voltage of 30,20 and 10 keV was explored with h-BN, TiB2 and TiN compounds. All Ti L2,3, N K and B K ed

Reproductive physiological characteristics of tropical Celebes eels Anguilla celebesensis in relation to downstream migration and ovarian development.

Downstream-migrating (n = 64) and non-migrating (n = 21) female Celebes eels Anguilla celebesensis were captured from the Poso Lake-River system on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, and their reproductive physiological characteristics were examined. A histological observation of the ovaries revealed that most non-migrating eels were at the perinucleolus (43%) or oil-droplet (48%) stage, whereas most migrating eels were at the early vitellogenic (36%) or midvitellogenic (61%) stage. Incidence of antimicrobial-resistance genes and integrons in antibiotic-resistant bacteria isolated from eels and aquaculture ponds.

The overuse of antimicrobials in aquaculture has promoted the selection of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Here we investigated the abundance of antimicrobial-resistance genes and integrons in 108 strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria isolated from eels and aquaculture ponds in China. Conventional PCR was implemented to examine common antibiotic-resistance genes, integrons, and their gene cassette arrays. The results showed that the antibiotic-resistance genes blaTEM, tetC, sulI, aadA, floR, and qnrB were detected at high percentages, as were a number of other resistance genes. Class I in

Identification of molecular markers in pectoral fin to predict artificial maturation of female European eels (Anguilla anguilla).

The European eel is a critically endangered species that cannot be reproduced in captivity yet. Artificial maturation of female European eels can be achieved via a laborious and expensive procedure, including weekly injections with pituitary extracts for up to 6 months. The success rate is highly variable and a minimally invasive method for early selection of responsive eels would prevent the unnecessary and lengthy treatment of non-responding individuals. Since sexual maturation of European eels is accompanied by morphological changes of the pectoral fin, we examined whether fin could be used
