Dogs and people are exposed to and susceptible to infection by many of the same tick-borne bacterial pathogens in the order Rickettsiales, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia canis, E. chaffeensis, E. ewingii, Rickettsia rickettsii, R. conorii, and other spotted fever group rickettsiae. Recent findings include descriptions of novel Ehrlichia and Rickettsia species, recognition of the occurrence and clinical significance of co-infection, and increasing awareness of Rhipicephalus sanguineus-associated diseases. Newer molecular assays are available, although renewed efforts to encourag

In retrospective analyses, we report 3 febrile patients in Japan who had seroconversion to antibodies against Ehrlichia chaffeensis antigens detected by using an immunofluorescence and Western blot. Our results provide evidence of autochthonous human ehrlichiosis cases and indicate ehrlichiosis should be considered a potential cause of febrile illness in Japan.

Ehrlichiosis is a recently described tick-borne disease characterized by headache, fever and chills, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and transaminase elevation. The presentation is similar to Rocky Mountain spotted fever but the rash is less frequently present in ehrlichiosis. The diagnosis is confirmed by elevated antibody titers to Ehrlichia chaffeensis or visualization of inclusions in white blood cells and the disease is easily cured with tetracyclines or chloramphenicol. Cases of ehrlichiosis are reported from southeastern, southcentral and midatlantic states. We report three cases of Ehrli

Tick-borne illness has been increasingly on the rise, since the first human case was reported in the late 1980s. Ehrlichia chaffeensis is one of the most common reported causes of tick-borne illness, particularly in the southern states of the United States. The clinical picture presents as a paradigm to the clinician, often missing the diagnosis without an appropriate history being taken and sometimes mistreated for other conditions. With the number of cases on the rise, new manifestations and clinical presentations due to E chaffeensis continue to be reported. Our case report is one such case

The ehrlichial gene was detected in small rodents trapped in a Lyme disease-endemic area in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. Primer pairs of 16S rDNA targeting the genus Ehrlichia and other regions of the 16S rDNA specific for E. chaffeensis and E. muris were used for identification. The DNA fragment specific for 16S rDNA of Ehrlichia spp. was detected in 4 of 94 Apodemus speciosus mice (positive rate: 4.3%) and 5 of 73 Clethrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae mice (positive rate: 6.8%). The nucleotide sequence of the amplified 16S rDNA fragment was most similar to those of E. muris-like

BACKGROUND: Anaplasma and Ehrlichia are emerging tick-borne pathogens that cause anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis in humans and other animals worldwide. Infections caused by these pathogens are deadly if left untreated. There has been relatively no systematic survey of these pathogens among ticks in South Africa, thus necessitating this study. The presence of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species were demonstrated by PCR in ticks collected from domestic ruminants at some selected communities in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The ticks were identified by morphological characteristics and thereafter p

Human monocytic ehrlichiosis is a recently described tick-borne infection with the rickettsial organism Ehrlichia chaffeensis. We describe a patient with documented E chaffeensis infection and multiple organ system involvement. Prominent neurologic symptoms and signs included severe headache, meningismus, and altered mental status. Additional neurologic findings included unilateral arm weakness and a Bell's palsy. Biopsy of brain and meninges demonstrated an infiltrate of atypical lymphoid cells in the leptomeninges with involvement of blood vessel walls and extension into the Virchow-Robin sp

A rickettsial pathogen, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, causes an emerging tick-borne disease called human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME). E. chaffeensis in ticks expresses a porin OMP-1B, the immunodominant major outer membrane protein, which is required for nutrient uptake across the outer membrane of bacteria. We developed an OMP-1B-encoding mRNA-lipid nanoparticle (hereafter OMP-1B mRNA-LNP) vaccine. Immunization of naïve mice with OMP-1B mRNA-LNP showed significant protection against E. chaffeensis infection following a challenge with E. chaffeensis-infected tick cells. Following vaccination, increa

Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) is caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis, an obligate intracellular bacterium that infects mononuclear phagocytic cells. We report a unique case of HME diagnosed in a woman who presented with abdominal pain and acute appendicitis during early pregnancy and whose condition progressively deteriorated to adult respiratory distress syndrome.

Human ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis are potentially severe illnesses endemic in the United States. Several bacterial agents are known causes of these diseases: Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, Ehrlichia muris-like agent, Panola Mountain Ehrlichia species, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Because more than one agent may be present in one area, cases of human ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis may be reported as "human ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis undetermined" when the available evidence does not suggest an etiology to the species level. Here, we present a brief summary of these undetermined cas

BACKGROUND: Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease (LD), and Babesia, Bartonella, and Ehrlichia species (spp.) are recognized tick-borne pathogens in humans worldwide. Using serology and molecular testing, the incidence of these pathogens was investigated in symptomatic patients from Australia.
METHODS: Sera were analyzed by an immunofluorescent antibody assay (IFA) followed by immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM Western blot (WB) assays. Both whole blood and sera were analyzed for detection of specific Borrelia spp. DNA using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Sim

The Anaplasmataceae family includes obligate, arthropod-transmitted intracellular bacteria that can be zoonotic and potentially fatal. Studies focusing on the interaction between neotropical primates and the agents of this family are scarce. The present study aimed to identify agents of the Anaplasmataceae family in the whole blood of free-living and captive neotropical primates in the State of Mato Grosso, Central-West Brazil. Thirty-eight samples of six nonhuman primate (NHP) species were collected in seven municipalities and analysed through polymerase chain reaction (PCR), nucleotide seque

Human ehrlichiosis is transmitted by ticks. For the first time it was described in 1987. The ethiologic agent is Ehrlichia chaffeenisis. The course of the disease may be mild, self-limited or sometimes severe finishing with dead. The main symptoms are: fever, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, or pancytopenia. Tetracyclines are mostly efficient in the treatment.

Vector-borne agents comprise medically important infections affecting dogs throughout much of the world. Sensitive detection of antibodies directed at tick-borne disease-causing organisms in dogs is diagnostically important for veterinarians, pets and their owners, and epidemiologically important for public health surveillance. The SNAP 4Dx Plus Test (IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., Westbrook, ME) identifies antibodies to or infection with multiple tick-borne pathogens and canine heartworm antigen in a single assay. Recently, VetScan FLEX4 Rapid Test (Abaxis, Inc., Union City, CA) was launched as a

Serum specimens from persons with or without Lyme borreliosis were analyzed by indirect fluorescent antibody staining methods for total immunoglobulins to Babesia microti, Ehrlichia chaffeensis (Arkansas strain), and Ehrlichia equi (MRK strain). There was serologic evidence of human exposure to multiple tick-borne agents in 15 (6.6%) of 227 serum samples obtained in Connecticut and Minnesota. Of these, 10 serum samples were from Connecticut patients who had erythema migrans and antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi (range, 1:160 to 1:40, 960). A maximal antibody titer of 1:640 was noted for a B.

An 85-year-old man, actively infected with Babesia microti and Ehrlichia chaffeensis, presented with fatigue and thrombocytopenia. He developed rhabdomyolysis and multiple organ failure, which led to death 6 days after initial presentation. To our knowledge, concurrent acute disease due to these 2 organisms has not been reported previously, although serologic studies have shown that some patients acquire both infections in life.

INTRODUCTION: Ehrlichia are obligate intracellular pathogens transmitted to vertebrates by ticks.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 59-year-old man who presented to the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Medical Center (Lexington, KY, USA) after being found fallen down in the woods. A lumbar puncture revealed what appeared to be bacterial meningitis, yet cerebrospinal fluid cultures, Gram stains and a meningitis/encephalitis panel were inconclusive. However, an Ehrlichia DNA PCR of the blood resulted as being positive for Ehrlichia chaffeensis antibodies. The patient received

The seroprevalence of antibodies directed against granulocytic and monocytic Ehrlichia was determined by use of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis agent and Ehrlichia chaffeensis as surrogate antigens. Seven hundred twenty-one serum samples were collected between 1992 and 1999 from febrile patients with unresolved aetiology (n=108), patients suspected of having Lyme disease (n=174), forestry workers (n=154) and healthy controls (n=54) as well as from wild deer (n=96), hares (n=60), wild boar (n=15) and red foxes (n=60). Reactive antibodies against granulocytic Ehrlichia were detected in 4% of feb

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a fatal, immunologic syndrome characterized by dysregulated tissue inflammation. HLH can be either primary or secondary; with the latter typically resulting from an infection. Diagnosis requires five or more of the following: fever, splenomegaly, cytopenia, hypertriglyceridemia, hemophagocytosis via biopsy, low natural killer (NK) cell activity, elevated ferritin and soluble CD25 level (sCD25). We present a case of HLH related to ehrlichiosis. In order to mount an effective immune response against microbes such as Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the host must
