Despite cross-breeding of Djallonke and Sahelian sheep due to the higher growth rate and final body weight of the Sahelian breeds over time, little scientific evidence exists on the ability of the crosses to withstand diseases compared to their Djallonke parents. A study involving 700 Djallonke and two crosses of the Djallonke and Sahelian breeds (50% Sahel × 50% Djallonke, 75% Sahel × 25% Djallonke) was conducted, and documented incidence of diseases, parasites and mortalities in these animals. Enteritis, Ehrlichia ruminantium and orf were more prevalent in 25% Djallonke than both 100% and 50

A reverse line blot (RLB) assay was developed for the identification of cattle carrying different species of Theileria and Babesia simultaneously. We included Theileria annulata, T. parva, T. mutans, T. taurotragi, and T. velifera in the assay, as well as parasites belonging to the T. sergenti-T. buffeli-T. orientalis group. The Babesia species included were Babesia bovis, B. bigemina, and B. divergens. The assay employs one set of primers for specific amplification of the rRNA gene V4 hypervariable regions of all Theileria and Babesia species. PCR products obtained from blood samples were hyb

The continuous flow of billions of birds between Africa and Europe creates an "ecological bridge" between physically remote areas. Migratory birds fly south from their breeding grounds during late summer/fall and fly back in spring. These movements regulate the spread of internal and external parasites, as well as pathogens of potential public health concern. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible introduction of exotic tick species and tick-borne pathogens into Europe via migratory birds. At the bird observatory of Ventotene island (Italy), 443 feeding ticks were collect

Little is known about the occurrence of haemoparasites in cattle in communal grazing areas of Mungwi District of Northern Province, Zambia. Clinical signs and post mortem lesions are pathognomonic of mixed tick-borne infections especially babesiosis, anaplasmosis and East Coast fever. The main objective of this study was to screen selected communal herds of cattle for tick-borne haemoparasites, and identify the tick vectors associated with the high cattle mortalities due to suspected tick-borne diseases in the local breeds of cattle grazing along the banks of the Chambeshi River in Mungwi Dist

Tick-borne parasites are a serious impediment to the improvement of live-stock production in the developing world. The major parasites affecting cattle include Theileria parva, T. annulata, Babesia bigemina, B. bovis, Anaplasma marginale and Cowdria ruminantium. The control of these infections is dependent on the use of acaricides to decrease transmission by the tick vectors, and immunization of susceptible animals with live vaccines. The use of acaricide is hampered by the development of resistance, and live vaccines require cold chain facilities, which are generally unreliable in developing

BACKGROUND: Ticks pose a major threat to livestock and human health in sub-Saharan Africa, with climate change and pastoral movements fueling their spread. Few studies have integrated multiple sample types to characterize tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in cattle in Kenya. This knowledge gap hinders the development of effective surveillance and control strategies, leaving vulnerable populations and their livestock susceptible to these persistent threats.
METHODS: We screened 280 bovine blood samples, 589 tick pools, and 284 non-invasive skin swabs from cattle in northern (Marsabit) and southern (

The development of sensitive surveillance technologies using PCR-based detection of microbial DNA, such as the reverse line blot assay, can facilitate the gathering of epidemiological information on tick-borne diseases, which continue to hamper the productivity of livestock in many parts of Africa and elsewhere. We have employed a reverse line blot assay to detect the prevalence of tick-borne parasites in an intensively studied cohort of indigenous calves in western Kenya. The calves were recruited close to birth and monitored for the presence of infectious disease for up to 51 weeks. The fina

The in vitro culture of Cowdria ruminantium, the causative agent of heartwater in domestic ruminants, was first achieved in 1985. Culture media were usually supplemented with serum and tryptose phosphate broth, both undefined components, contributing to great variability. Recently, we reported about the propagation of stocks of C. ruminantium in a protein-free culture medium referred to as SFMC-23, which is chemically fully defined. To clarify whether the amino acid composition in SFMC-23 is adequate for the in vitro propagation of Cowdria, the Welgevonden stock was propagated in SFMC-23 mediu

There are many exotic animal pathogens throughout the world that, if introduced into the United States. could have a significant detrimental impact on the health of livestock, agricultural economy, the environment, and public health. Many of these pathogens are arthropod-borne and potential vectors are readily available in the United States. A number of these arthropod-borne pathogens are discussed here as examples that illustrate the potential risk and the consequences of inadvertent introductions. Several International agencies have a role in global surveillance and in controlling animal dis

A DNA vaccine (VCL1010/MAP1) containing the major antigenic protein 1 (MAP1) gene of Cowdria ruminantium, driven by the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) enhancer-promoter, was injected intramuscularly into 8-10 week-old female DBA/2 mice after treating them with 50 microliters/muscle of 0.5% bupivacaine three days previously. Up to 75% of the immunized mice seroconverted and reacted with C. ruminantium antigen blots. Splenocytes from immunized mice, but not from control mice, proliferated in response to the recombinant MAP1 and to C. ruminantium antigens in in vitro lymphocyte proliferation tests.

A survey was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of tick-borne diseases (TBD) in Nguni and non-descript cattle on the sweet and sour communal rangelands across seasons. Body condition scores, bodyweights, packed cell volume (PCV) and antibodies to B. bovis, B. bigemina, Ehrlichiaruminatium and Anaplasma marginale were determined seasonally in 144 cattle raised on communal rangelands from August 2007 to April 2008. Approximately 45% of the cattle were seropositive for B. bovis, 46% for B. bigemina and 26% for A. marginale. All animals were seronegative for E. ruminantium. Nguni cattle had

Crossbred dairy heifers on a farm in an East Coast fever (ECF) endemic area in Malawi were immunised against Theileria parva, Anaplasma spp., Babesia bigemina, Babesia bovis and Cowdria ruminantium. They were treated at infrequent intervals with chlorfenvinphos to limit infestation with adult ticks, without providing complete tick control. In one trial, which tested a threshold dipping regimen, 20 heifers were dipped only once in 6 months to control a flush of Boophilus microplus. Unimmunised controls showed serological evidence of exposure to T. parva and B. bigemina, and one died of ECF, but

Heartwater, a tick-borne disease caused by Ehrlichia ruminantium, is considered to be a significant cause of mortality amongst domestic and wild ruminants in South Africa. The main vector is Amblyomma hebraeum and although previous epidemiological studies have outlined endemic areas based on mortalities, these have been limited by diagnostic methods which relied mainly on positive brain smears. The indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFA) has a low specificity for heartwater organisms as it cross-reacts with some other species. Since the advent of biotechnology and genomics, molecular epidemio

INTRODUCTION: Ticks and the pathogens they transmit are widespread in Caribbean animal populations. There is; however, limited information on the diversity of ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TTBPs) in the region. This study aims to identify TTBPs across multiple Caribbean countries using a high-throughput real-time microfluidic PCR system.
METHODS: Six Caribbean territories: Barbados, Guyana, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Tobago and Trinidad were targeted in this study. Nucleic acids were extracted from individual ticks, and a high-throughput microfluidic real-time PCR system was used to screen for 4

The most important tick-borne disease of cattle in eastern, central and southern Africa is East Coast fever (ECF) caused by Theileria parva and transmitted by the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. Other less-important tick-borne diseases in cattle are benign theileriosis caused by Theileria mutans, babesiosis caused by Babesia bigemina, anaplasmosis caused by Anaplasma marginale and cowdriosis caused by Cowdria ruminatum. In Murang's District, Central Province of Kenya, five agroecological zones (AEZs) are defined according to climate, altitude and agricultural activities. A cross-sectional s

BACKGROUND: The majority of the African population lives in rural areas and depends on agriculture for their livelihoods. To increase the productivity and sustainability of their farms, they need access to affordable yield-enhancing inputs of which parasite control is of paramount importance. We therefore determined the status of current tick species with the highest economic impact on cattle by sampling representative numbers of animals in each of seven sub-Saharan countries.
METHODS: Data included tick species' half-body counts from approximately 120 cattle at each of two districts per coun

The role of African wildlife in the occurrence of vector-borne infections in domestic animals has gained renewed interest as emerging and re-emerging infections occur worldwide at an increasing rate. In Africa, biodiversity conservation and the expansion of livestock production have increased the risk of transmitting vector-borne infections between wildlife and livestock. The indigenous African pathogens with transboundary potential, such as Rift Valley fever virus, African horse sickness virus, bluetongue virus, lumpy skin disease virus, African swine fever virus, and blood-borne parasites ha

Tick-borne diseases (TBD) occur in many temperate countries and are economically important in most tropical and subtropical areas, affecting dairy and beef cattle, as well as small ruminants. Four major tick-borne diseases have been detected in eastern and southern Africa: East Coast fever (ECF) caused by Theileria parva, Theiler 1904, anaplasmosis caused by either Anaplasma marginale, Theiler 1910, Anaplasma centrale, Theiler 1911, or Anaplasma ovis, Bevan 1912, babesiosis caused by Babesia bovis, Babes 1988 and Babesia bigemina, Smith & Kilborne 1893, and heartwater caused by Ehrlichia rumin
