Physiological Responses and Absorption Removal Effects of Three Floating Macrophytes to Polystyrene Nanoplastics Pollution.

Microplastics exert toxic effects on aquatic plants, thereby impacting ecosystem functions and services. Currently, research on the effects of nanoplastics on aquatic plants has mainly focused on algae, while floating macrophytes have received less attention. To investigate the physiological responses and uptake and accumulation effects of floating macrophytes to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs), we exposed Limnobium laevigatum, Pistia stratiotes and Eichhornia crassipes to 0.1, 1 and 10 mg·L-1 of PS-NPs (20/100 nm) for 45 days. The results showed that, in general, with increasing concentrati

Multi-Dimensional Elimination of β-Lactams in the Rural Wetland: Molecule Design and Screening for More Antibacterial and Degradable Substitutes.

Restricted economic conditions and limited sewage treatment facilities in rural areas lead to the discharge of small-scale breeding wastewater containing higher values of residual beta-lactam antibiotics (β-lactams), which seriously threatens the aquatic environment. In this paper, molecular docking and a comprehensive method were performed to quantify and fit the source modification for the combined biodegradation of β-lactams. Using penicillin (PNC) as the target molecule, combined with contour maps for substitute modification, a three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship

Design of an integrated piggery system with recycled water, biomass production and water purification by vermiculture, macrophyte ponds and constructed wetlands.

Since 2001 the swine experimental station of Guernévez has studied biological treatment plants for nutrient recovery and water recycling, suited to the fresh liquid manure coming out of flushing systems. An integrated system with continuous recycling was set up in 2007, associated with a piggery of 30 pregnant sows. It includes a screen, a vermifilter, and macrophyte ponds alternating with constructed wetlands. The screen and the vermifilter had a lower removal efficiency than in previous studies on finishing pigs. A settling tank was then added between the vermifilter and the first lagoon to

Efficient Cr (VI) removal from tannery wastewater using Co-Zn ferrite-modified water hyacinth biochar: mechanisms and optimization.

Chromium contamination from tannery effluents significantly threatens environmental sustainability and public health. This study aims to develop a Co-Zn ferrite-incorporated water hyacinth biochar (Co-ZnF@WHB) for efficient Cr (VI) removal from contaminated water. The biochar was synthesized through pyrolysis of water hyacinth steam at 450 ⁰C, followed by HNO₃ activation to enhance surface functionality. FTIR and XPS analysis confirmed the introduction of C = O and - OH groups, which created active sites and significantly improved Cr (VI) adsorption. XPS analysis indicated Cr (VI) reduction to

Mercury methylation and the microbial consortium in periphyton of tropical macrophytes: effect of different inhibitors.

Macrophyte-associated periphyton is known as a site of Hg accumulation and methylation in tropical environments. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is found in periphyton and its role in Hg methylation is acknowledged. However, the contribution of other microorganisms to this process is largely unknown. We tested the effect of inhibitors for different microorganisms on methylmercury (MMHg) formation on distinct macrophyte species from lakes of the Bolivian Amazon basin and in Brazil. We also tested the effect of inhibitors on bacterial secondary activity at two lakes in Brazil. Samples were incub

Does water hyacinth on East African lakes promote cholera outbreaks?

Cholera outbreaks continue to occur regularly in Africa. Cholera has been associated with proximity to lakes in East Africa, and Vibrio cholerae has been found experimentally to concentrate on the floating aquatic plant, water hyacinth, which is periodically widespread in East African lakes since the late 1980s. From 1994 to 2008, Nyanza Province, which is the Kenyan province bordering Lake Victoria, accounted for a larger proportion of cholera cases than expected by its population size (38.7% of cholera cases versus 15.3% of national population). Yearly water-hyacinth coverage on the Kenyan s

[FTIR spectroscopic characterization of chromium-induced changes in root cell wall of plants].

Due to its wide industrial use, chromium is considered a serious environmental pollutant. Contamination of soil and water by chromium (Cr) is of recent concern. Chromium mainly accumulates in root in plants, and the change in compounds of the root cell wall have a close relation with the Cr accumulation. Compared with the other identification methods, the identification of the Chinese traditional and herbal drugs using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer with OMNI collector is simple and convenient, fast and accurate. In the present paper, the spectra of cell wall of Cr-treated root and co

Field, laboratory, and X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies of mercury accumulation by water hyacinths.

We have studied water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), a non-native nuisance plant found in the in San Francisco Bay Delta region, for its potential to phytoremediate mercury. Mercury is a common contaminant in San Francisco Bay Area waters because of gold mining activities. In this study, speciation of mercury in hyacinth roots and shoots, rates of mercury uptake by hyacinths in the laboratory, and mercury levels near the Big Break Region in the Delta were studied. In the speciation studies, Hg L3 edge X-ray absorption spectroscopic analysis of Hg model compounds and water hyacinth roots and

Performance evaluation of eco-friendly water hyacinth fiber-reinforced epoxy composites for lightweight protective helmet shell applications.

The utilization of water hyacinth (WH) (Eichhornia crassipes) fibers as a reinforcing material in epoxy-based matrices has been extensively documented. However, research concerning the implementation of these composites specifically for protective helmet shell development remains relatively scarce. Therefore, the present study aims to evaluate the performance of eco-friendly water hyacinth fiber-reinforced epoxy composites as a sustainable alternative material for fabricating lightweight protective helmets. The composites were fabricated using epoxy resin via vacuum bagging and subsequently su

A cascade of biological invasions and parasite spillback in man-made Lake Kariba.

Parasite spillback, the infection of a non-indigenous organism by a native parasite, is a highly important although understudied component of ecological invasion dynamics. Here, through the first analysis of the parasite fauna of lymnaeid gastropods of Lake Kariba (Zimbabwe). We illustrate how the creation of an artificial lake may lead to a cascade of biological invasions in which an invasive aquatic plant promotes the proliferation of invasive gastropods, which in turn alters the epidemiology of trematodiases of potential medical and veterinary importance. Using a new multiplex Rapid Diagnos

Temporal and spatial variation of phosphate distribution in the sediment of a free water surface constructed wetland.

This study was aimed at determining the spatial and temporal variation of P distribution in sediment of an artificial wetland for sewage and industrial wastewater treatment, and the fraction that is potentially involved in the P exchange processes. Influent, effluent, macrophytes and sediment at the inlet, middle and outlet areas were sampled over 24 months. The P-fractionation in sediment was performed following the EDTA method. Eichhornia crassipes and Typha domingensis removed P efficiently when cover was high, but E. crassipes caused anoxic conditions. The increase in cover of T. domingens

Chemical management of aquatic macrophytes under simulated floodplain condition in mesocosms.

Floating natives (Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes) and emergent exotic invasives (Hedychium coronarium and Urochloa arrecta) macrophytes grow as aquatic weeds in both natural and artificial floodplain areas in Brazil, where the chemical control should be researched. The herbicides glyphosate and saflufenacil, alone or mixed, were tested for weed control under simulated floodplain condition in mesocosms. Glyphosate (1,440 g ha-1), saflufenacil (120 g ha-1), or glyphosate (1,440 g ha-1) + saflufenacil (42, 84, and 168 g ha-1) were applied firstly; and 75 days after treatment (DAT), gl

[Escherichia coli: diversity of biochemical phenotypes in aquatic environments (Santa, Fe, Argentina)].

During certain environmental conditions, the floating aquatic vegetation, mainly represented by Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) invade and even cover water courses assigned to recreational activities or to the supply of drinkable water. The rhizosphere of these plants constitutes an unknown biotope of bacteria of sanitary interest, possibly different from waters without vegetation and of the sediment of the same aquatic system. To verify such possibility, 206 isolated strains in MacConkey Agar (Difco) were typified and identified (78 from water, 65 from sediment and 63 from rhizosphere)

A covalent organic framework-enhanced hydrogel based on carboxylated cellulose nanofibers and water hyacinth carbon for efficient capture of dyes and heavy metal ions.

To remediate dye and heavy metal contamination in industrial wastewater, a novel ternary hydrogel adsorbent (COF@CCNF/WHC) was fabricated via radical polymerization using water hyacinth-derived carbon (WHC), carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (C-CNF) and covalent organic framework (COF). Compared with conventional biomass carbon and pure COF, this hydrogel suppresses powder agglomeration and improves separation performance, achieving high-efficiency water purification and providing a viable solution for the sustainable strategy of "treating waste with waste." Multiple characterizations verified

Comparative Distribution Projections of Hydrophilic and Xerophytic Invasive Species in Turkey Under CMIP6 Climate Scenarios.

Climate change imposes varying pressures on the potential distribution of invasive alien plant species, depending on their specific ecological strategies and physiological tolerances. In this study, the projected potential ranges within Turkey of the hydrophilic Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) and the markedly xerophytic Solanum elaeagnifolium (silverleaf nightshade) were compared under several CMIP6 climate scenarios: SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5. Species distribution models were produced using an ensemble modelling framework combining Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt), Random Forest (RF) and

From ecological threats to environmental solutions: a critical review of invasive plant species for heavy metal phytoremediation.

Heavy metal contamination represents a persistent environmental challenge threatening ecosystem stability, agricultural productivity, and human health. Therefore, the development of sustainable and cost-effective remediation strategies is essential. Phytoremediation, an environmentally compatible approach that utilizes plants and their associated biological processes to reduce contaminant mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity, has gained increasing attention as an alternative to conventional remediation techniques. Among potential phytoremediation candidates, invasive plant species (IPS) hav
