We present the case of a 22-year-old patient with no morbid history who developed a brain abscess secondary to endocarditis due to Eikenella corrodens. The diagnosis was established by detecting the microorganism by universal polymerase chain reaction in fluid from the brain collection. Trans-esophageal echocardiogram study confirmed vegetations in the mitral valve. External ventricular shunt placement was required due to emptying of abscess to brain ventricles and secondary hydrocephalus. He received 80 days of effective antibiotic treatment and his evolution was favorable with complete resol

We present the case of a seemingly spontaneous septic hip arthritis in a patient with no pertinent medical history. Our patient presented with persistent and worsening sharp lower back pain and underwent arthrocentesis of the hip joint, yielding purulent fluid positive for Eikenella corrodens. Our patient's treatment consisted of arthroscopic irrigation with debridement and limited synovectomy that used a supine 2-incision technique. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an E corrodens septic hip arthritis.

The AB Biodisk Etest showed that 106 (100%) and 98 (92%) isolates of Eikenella corrodens were susceptible to amoxicillin and tetracycline, respectively. Twenty-three (68%) Prevotella intermedia isolates and 14 (67%) Prevotella nigrescens isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin. Seventy-nine percent of the P. intermedia isolates and 67% of the P. nigrescens isolates were susceptible to tetracycline. A higher percentage of beta-lactamase-producing isolates of P. intermedia and P. nigrescens were identified with selective agar containing amoxicillin than with nonselective agar.

Postanginal sepsis is the term used to describe the life-threatening infection caused by suppurative phlebitis of the internal jugular vein secondary to infection of the parapharyngeal spaces. This begins with a history of pharyngitis followed by infection of the parapharyngeal spaces, septic pulmonary embolism, and septicemia caused by hematogenous dissemination of the infection. The oral anaerobes are the most common pathogens associated with this syndrome. Recently, we managed 2 patients who had septic pulmonary embolism from postanginal sepsis syndrome caused by Eikenella corrodens. Previo

BACKGROUND: Eikenella corrodens, a member of the HACEK group, is a fastidious Gram-negative bacillus that is part of the normal oropharyngeal microbiota and rarely causes lower respiratory tract infections. Pulmonary infections caused by E. corrodens are typically associated with predisposing factors such as aspiration, mucosal injury, or airway obstruction.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 79-year-old woman without known immunosuppressive conditions who presented with a several-week history of productive cough and progressive respiratory symptoms. The initial clinical evaluation an

Eikenella corrodens is a gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterium typically found in the oropharynx and respiratory tract of humans. It is responsible for various infections, including head-and-neck infections, pericarditis, and abscesses of the deltoid, perirenal tissue, brain, and liver. Increasing antibiotic resistance requires urgent identification of novel drug targets to fight this bacterium. In this study, subtractive proteomics and immunoinformatics approaches were used to identify the most suitable candidates for multi-epitope vaccine development. A non-homologous and pathogen

OBJECTIVES: Dentifrices containing zinc reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding better than control dentifrices (no zinc). How zinc might work is not understood. We have shown that lysine decarboxylase (LdcE), an enzyme from Eikenella corrodens, converts lysine to cadaverine in dental biofilms. The lack of lysine impairs the dentally attached cell barrier to biofilm, causing biofilm products to leak into junctional epithelium and stimulate inflammation. In year-old beagle dogs, immunization with LdcE, induces antibodies that inhibit LdcE activity and retard gingivitis development. We therefo

We report the first case of a woman with Behcet's disease (BD) with multiple hand ulcers secondary to coninfection by Eikenella corrodens and Staphylococcus aureus resulting in necrotizing fasciitis. She had a long history of BD including long courses of prednisone and immunosuppressants. The patient was hospitalized for multiple superficial ulcers, swelling, and infection of the hands. After admission, pus culture examination revealed rare coinfection by E. corrodens and S. aureus. We administered moxifloxacin and vancomycin to control infection and methylprednisolone to control BD. We perfor

Eikenella corrodens and group C streptococci have been noted to occur with increased frequency in patients with underlying malignancies and immunosuppressive states. We report a case where these organisms were isolated from a patient with immunoblastic lymphadenopathy and discuss the possible association between these two conditions.

BACKGROUND: Eikenella corrodens is a part of the inherent flora on the surface of human mucosa. It usually does not cause disease unless the patient has been bitten, injured or surgically infected. Lumbar spine infection caused by Eikenella corrodens usually presents with conventional symptoms such as low back pain and fever. Herein, we report a case of lumbar intervertebral space infection with Eikenella corrodens presented as abdominal pain.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old man with no medical history of note presented with abdominal pain. Initially, local doctors suspected that the patient

A 35-year-old male presented with headaches and fevers. MRI of his head showed skull-based infection of the clivus extended to the right internal carotid artery. Blood and sinus cultures were positive for Eikenella corrodens and Streptococcus anginosus. He had intravenous antibiotics and sinus washout. The patient had full neurological recovery following this.

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare, potentially life-threatening bacterial infection of the thyroid gland, characterized by rapid progression. We report a rare pediatric case of AST caused by Eikenella corrodens, secondary to a pyriform sinus fistula (PSF), initially misdiagnosed as subacute thyroiditis (SAT). A retrospective analysis highlights the diagnostic challenges and emphasizes the need for early suspicion of PSF in recurrent AST. Timely imaging (CT/laryngoscopy) and pathogen-directed antibiotics are critical to prevent life-threatening complications. This case underscores t

A 52-year-old man, without previous disease, presented with dysphagia, dyspnoea, high fever and sore throat after peritonsillar abscesses drainage. Physical and complementary examinations were consistent with pericarditis, mediastinitis, pneumonia and pleuritis. Blood cultures grew Eikenella corrodens resistant to clindamycin and amikacin. We emphasize the pathogenic potential of Eikenella corrodens. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of this organism as a pathogen in intrathoracic infections after peritonsillar abscesses drainage.

INTRODUCTION: Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is a rare pattern of glomerular injury that may be immune complex-mediated (ICM), most often secondary to infections, autoimmune disorders, or hematologic or less often solid tumor malignancies. Infections with Haemophilus, Aggregatibacter, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, Kingella (HACEK) organisms are a well-known but rare cause of infective endocarditis (IE), which may be difficult to detect. Bacterial infections are more common in patients with cirrhosis, which may complicate the interpretation of clinical findings.

BACKGROUND: Eikenella corrodens is a commensal organism of the oral and upper respiratory tract and is only rarely implicated in osteomyelitis. Maxillary involvement is considered uncommon, likely reflecting the rich vascularity of the maxilla. To our knowledge, maxillary osteomyelitis complicated by sequestrum and an oronasal fistula caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) E. corrodens has not been previously reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old man underwent extraction of a mobile maxillary tooth. One month later, he developed recurrent swelling at the extraction site, followed by purulent

RATIONALE: Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP), caused by co-infection with Eikenella corrodens and Enterococcus avium is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of successful management without catheter removal.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 75-year-old male on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis presented with persistent abdominal pain, abdominal distension, and cloudy peritoneal dialysate.
DIAGNOSES: Microbiological cultures of the peritoneal dialysate identified Eikenella corrodens and Enterococcus avium as causative pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Empyema is one of the complications of pulmonary surgery for lung cancer, the incidence of which is not very high, but in severe cases, it can even lead to death, and it is always difficult to diagnose the cause by conventional methods.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we report a clinical case of empyema caused by Eikenella halliae after pulmonary surgery in a 55-year-old man. He had a fever, cough, and expectoration for 3 days and was diagnosed with right hydropneumothorax and empyema, pneumonia, postoperative malignant tumor of the right lower lobe (adenocarcinoma), and hypert
