Gnotobiotic chickens infected with Eimeria tenella (5 X 10(4) oocysts per bird) received an oral inoculation of 100 Salmonella typhimurium two, four, six or eight days after coccidial infection at four days old. When S typhimurium was given two or four days after E tenella infection, S typhimurium counts in the caecal contents were similar to the counts in birds infected with S typhimurium alone. When S typhimurium was given six or eight days after E tenella infection, counts of the organism were significantly greater than with S typhimurium infection alone. There were no differences in the nu

Globally, coccidiosis is one of the most economically important diseases affecting the poultry industry, and poultry plays a vital role in producing meat and eggs, providing high-quality, relatively inexpensive protein for humans. Due to its high feed efficiency compared to other industrial animals, this industry has gradually expanded worldwide, but its productivity is affected by various dangerous diseases. One of the pathogens is coccidiosis, caused by seven species of Eimeria, which infects the intestines and causes signs such as diarrhea, increased feed conversion rate, reduced egg produc

Eimeria spp. are major protozoan parasites of cattle, causing coccidiosis with substantial economic and animal health impacts worldwide. This study systematically reviewed and meta-analysed the global prevalence, species distribution and associated risk factors of Eimeria spp. in cattle. Various international databases were searched from inception to 16 April 2025. Eligible studies reported extractable prevalence data for naturally infected cattle. Pooled prevalence was estimated using a random-effects model, with heterogeneity assessed by I2 statistic. Subgroup analyses were conducted by publ

Recently, there has been an increased focus on the development of novel anti-parasitic drugs that exhibit both highly efficacy and low toxicity due to growing concerns associated with the widespread use of such drugs. Natural products have garnered significant interest owing to their diverse biological activities and minimal adverse effects. In this study, we assessed the anti-Eimeria tenella activity of four plant compounds belonging to the Lamiaceae family, namely Perillyl alcohol, Carvone, Menthone and Perilla aldehyde. Our in vitro experiments demonstrated that all four compounds, particul

BACKGROUND: Nanotechnology has the potential to reduce drug dosage while increasing efficacy; thus, the current work intends to synthesize diclazuril nanoemulsion and assess its performance against experimental coccidiosis in broilers.
METHODS: Diclazuril nanoemulsion (DZN) was formulated and characterized by zeta seizer and zeta potential. The formulated DZN was evaluated in vivo against Eimeria tenella infected chicks. DZN and DZ were used in 2 programs; therapeutic and prophylactic. A total of 210 one-day-old broiler chicks were distributed equally into six groups. The controls were negati

Worldwide distributed coccidiosis is caused by infection of both Eimeria species and Cystoisospora in the host intestine and causes huge economic losses to the livestock industry, especially the poultry industry. The control of such diseases relies mainly on chemoprophylaxis with anticoccidials, which has led to a very common drug resistance in this field. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying resistance to many anticoccidial drugs remain unknown. In this study, strains of E. tenella resistant to 250 mg/kg monensin were generated and characterized. Forward genetic approaches based on pool

Coccidiosis represents a major driver in the economic performance of poultry operations, as coccidia control is expensive, and infections can result in increased feed conversion ratios, uneven growth rates, increased co-morbidities with pathogens such as Salmonella, and mortality within flocks. Shifts in broiler production to antibiotic-free strategies, increased attention on pre-harvest food safety, and growing incidence of anti-coccidial drug resistance has created a need for increased understanding of interventional efficacy and methods of coccidia control. Conventional methods to quantify

Autophagy is a cellular process that is vital for the maintenance of homeostasis in eukaryotic cells. Currently, autophagy-related genes (atgs) in the Eimeria tenella genome database have been reported, but very little is known about the effects of autophagy on the survival and invasive activity of this protozoan. In this study, we investigated the autophagy in E. tenella sporozoites under starvation and autophagy-modulators treatments and evaluated the autophagy influence on cellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, the survival rate and the invasive activity of the sporozoites. The resul

Avian coccidiosis is caused by the intracellular protozoan Eimeria, which produces intestinal lesions leading to weight gain depression. Current control methods include vaccination and anticoccidial drugs. An alternative approach involves modulating the immune system. The objective of this study was to profile the expression of host defense peptides such as avian beta-defensins (AvBDs) and liver expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2), which are part of the innate immune system. The mRNA expression of AvBD family members 1, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13 and LEAP2 was examined in chickens challeng

The genus Cryptosporidium, which is an obligate intracellular parasite, infects various vertebrates and causes a diarrheal disease known as cryptosporidiosis. Bats are naturally infected with zoonotic pathogens; thus, they are potential reservoirs of parasites. We investigated the species and genotype distribution as well as prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Eimeria in Philippine bats. We captured and examined 45 bats; four were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. and seven were positive for Eimeria spp. We detected Cryptosporidium bat genotype II from Ptenochirus jagori. Three other Cryptospori

Extensive use of current anti-coccidial drugs together with drug resistance and residue has raised concerns about public health and poultry development. Here, we studied the anti-coccidial properties of Bidens pilosa. A phytochemical approach was developed for analysis of B. pilosa utilized as a feed additive. The protective effects of B. pilosa supplemented chicken diet were evaluated chickens infected with Eimeria tenella. B. pilosa, at doses of 0.5%, 1% and 5% of the chicken diet, significantly protected against E.tenella as measured by reduction in mortality, weight loss, fecal oocyst excr

Standard methods of determining the ionophore sensitivity of Eimeria rely on infecting chickens with an isolate or a mixture of Eimeria spp. oocysts in the presence of different anti-coccidial drugs. The purpose of this study was to develop a rapid in vitro method for assessing salinomycin and monensin sensitivity in Eimeria tenella. Cultures of MDBK cells were grown to 85% confluency, and then inoculated with excysted E. tenella laboratory strain (APU-1) sporozoites in the presence of different concentrations of salinomycin or monensin. At various timepoints, the monolayers were fixed for cou

Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in many physiological processes including regulation of blood pressure, immune response, and neural communication. The effects of NO donors on the sporogony of Eimeria tenella oocysts and the blocking effects of NO scavenger, hemoglobin (Hb), against NO donors were investigated in this study. The results showed that the sporulation of oocysts could be completely inhibited by acidic sodium nitrite (NaNO2), S-nitroso-glutathione (GSNO) or S-nitroso-N-acetyl-dl-penicillamine (SNAP) in profound dose-dependent and time-dependent manners, and the inhibiting process was

Most first generation schizonts of Eimeria apsheronica developed in the jejunum; others were distributed throughout the small intestine and occasionally in the caecum. Some were also found in the mesenteric lymph nodes, which were oedematous and haemorrhagic. In the intestine, haemorrhage and congestion were seen before parasites were detected, and continued throughout all later stages. Schizonts occurred in the lamina propria and occasionally in the submucosa, where they sometimes caused a cellular inflammatory response. Schizonts were first seen at 8 days post-infection (DPI); they had poorl

Bacteria were detected in the enterocytes of the distal jejunum in weaned pigs on Days 7 and 9 post-infection (DPI) with Eimeria scabra in addition to the developmental stages of the coccidia. Short rod-shaped bacteria were identified in approximately 60% of the enterocytes that contained developmental stages of E. scabra. No such bacteria were observed in cells where coccidia were absent. Gamonts of cryptosporidia were also observed within the microvillous zone of the enterocytes in the distal jejunum of weaned pigs on DPI 9 with E. scabra. Cryptosporidia were present only in enterocytes harb

The protozoan parasite, Eimeria leuckarti was present in the ileal mucosa of a 7-month-old Thoroughbred filly which was destroyed with acute peritonitis resulting from perforation of the rectum. The parasite was considered to be of no clinical significance and the signs of colic noted prior to the rectal rupture were related to the vascular lesions caused by infection with Delafondia vulgaris.

BACKGROUND: Poultry coccidiosis is a parasitic enteric disease with a highly negative impact on chicken production. In-feed chemoprophylaxis remains the primary method of control, but the increasing ineffectiveness of anticoccidial drugs, and potential future restrictions on their use has encouraged the use of commercial live vaccines. Availability of such formulations is constrained by their production, which relies on the use of live chickens. Several experimental approaches have been taken to explore ways to reduce the complexity and cost of current anticoccidial vaccines including the use
