Independent testing of soft tissue visco-elasticity using indentation and rotary shear deformations.

Numerous techniques exist to measure the mechanical properties of soft tissues in vivo, such as mechanical stretching, indentation or shearing, as well as elastographic methods employing ultrasound or other imaging modes. Many groups have reported properties which do not necessarily correspond with each other due to differences in choice of technique, tissue model or other variations. This work deliberately makes use of the two independent modes of indentation and rotary shear, on the same material samples, employing similar modeling approximations, to attempt to determine the common, underlyi

In vivo and ex vivo imaging of intra-tissue elastic fibers using third-harmonic-generation microscopy.

The use of testosterone to treat the symptoms of late-onset hypogonadal men has increased recently due to patient and physician awareness. However, concerns regarding the effect of testosterone on the prostate, in particular any possible effect on the risk of prostate cancer have prompted further research in this regard. Surprisingly, numerous retrospective or small, randomized trials have pointed to a possible improvement in male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients treated with testosterone. The exact mechanism of this improvement is still debated but may have a close relationship

Steroid Hormones Are Key Modulators of Tissue Mechanical Function via Regulation of Collagen and Elastic Fibers.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an active and dynamic role that both reflects and facilitates the functional requirements of a tissue. The mature ECM of the nonpregnant cervix is drastically reorganized during pregnancy to drive changes in tissue mechanics that ensure safe birth. In this study, our research on mice deficient in the proteoglycan decorin have led to the finding that progesterone and estrogen play distinct and complementary roles to orchestrate structural reorganization of both collagen and elastic fibers in the cervix during pregnancy. Abnormalities in collagen and elastic

AFM mapping of the elastic properties of brain tissue reveals kPa μm(-1) gradients of rigidity.

It is now well established that the mechanical environment of the cells in tissues deeply impacts cellular fate, including life cycle, differentiation and tumor progression. Designs of biomaterials already include the control of mechanical parameters, and in general, their main focus is to control the rheological properties of the biomaterials at a macroscopic scale. However, recent studies have demonstrated that cells can stress their environment below the micron scale, and therefore could possibly respond to the rheological properties of their environment at this micron scale. In this contex

Investigating plantar soft tissue elasticity modulation using air insoles during walking.

BACKGROUND: In the forefoot region, diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is more likely to develop due to elevated plantar pressure and repetitive loading. This study investigated the effects of different forefoot insole pressures and walking durations on the elasticity of the plantar tissue to identify conditions that may help prevent DFU. METHODS: With thirteen healthy participants, we conducted a controlled walking exercise at a speed of 3.6 mph on a treadmill, comparing three different inner pressures of 80, 160, and 240 mmHg with two different walking durations of 10 and 20 min. We measured the elas

A Theoretical Approach in Applying High-Frequency Acoustic and Elasticity Microscopy to Assess Cells and Tissues.

Medical ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging modality used for visualizing internal organs; the frequencies typically used are 2-10 MHz. Scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) is a form of ultrasound where frequencies typically exceed 50 MHz. Increasing the acoustic frequency increases the specimen's spatial resolution but reduces the imaging depth. The advantages of using SAM over conventional light and electron microscopy include the ability to image cells and tissues without any preparation that could kill or alter them, providing a more accurate representation of the specimen. After scanning the

Evaluation of Suburethral Tissue Elasticity Using Strain Elastography in Women with Stress Urinary Incontinence.

Objectives: Strain elastography (SE) is a non-invasive ultrasound-based technique for evaluating tissue elasticity. This study investigated whether SE can reproducibly detect differences in suburethral tissue stiffness between women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and continent controls. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 40 women (20 with SUI, 20 continent controls) underwent introital two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound in the midsagittal plane at rest. SE was performed at three predefined suburethral regions of interest (ROIs): the internal urethral orifice (IUO), midurethra (MU)

Elastic Fibres in the subcutaneous tissue: Is there a difference between superficial and muscular fascia? A cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: In last years the role of fascia in proprioception and pain has been confirmed in numerous papers, but the real structure of fasciae is not still entirely known. To date, many studies have evaluated the elastic fibres in arteries, ligaments, lungs, epidermis and dermis, but only two studies exist about the elastic fibres in the fasciae, and they did not distinguish between superficial (in the subcutaneous tissue) and deep/muscular fasciae. The aim of the study was to assess the percentage of elastic fibres between superficial and deep fascia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three full thic

ARFI-based tissue elasticity quantification and kidney graft dysfunction: first clinical experiences.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Beyond the medical history, the clinical exam and lab findings, non-invasive ultrasound parameters such as kidney size and Doppler values (e.g. the resistive index) are important tools assisting clinical decision making in the monitoring of renal allografts. The gold standard for the diagnosis of renal allograft dysfunction remains the renal biopsy; while an invasive procedure, the justifiable necessity for this derives from its definitive nature a requirement beyond the synopses of all non-invasive tools. Ultrasound palpation sensor for tissue thickness and elasticity measurement--assessment of transverse carpal ligament.

Palpation is a traditional diagnostic procedure for health care professionals to use their fingers to touch and feel the body soft tissues. It is a common clinical approach, though it is rather subjective and qualitative and the palpation results may vary among different people. Tissue ultrasound palpation sensor (TUPS) provides a feasible solution that makes the palpation of soft tissues not subjective feeling any more. It is comprised of an ultrasound transducer together with a load cell to form the finger-sized probe. The probe is used to push against the soft tissue surface to measure the

A prospective cohort study testing whether oral cavity mucosal tissue variability influences elastic scattering spectroscopy (ESS) measures.

OBJECTIVE: Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy (ESS) has been shown to accurately discriminate between benign and malignant tissue in the oral cavity, which makes it a promising technology to assist with intraoperative oral cancer margin guidance. However, some spectroscopy-based technologies are influenced by locoregional histopathological differences, which can influence diagnostic accuracy and data acquisition procedures. The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which ESS spectral readings of mucosal tissue varied between different anatomic regions of the oral cavity in a cohort

Pulmonary elastic tissue in generalized elastolysis (cutis laxa) and Marfan's syndrome: a light and electron microscopic study.

We have studied elastic tissue changes in the lungs from patients with Marfan's syndrome, generalized elastolysis, patients with emphysema of other cause, and those dying from unrelated causes. Degenerative changes were seen in the elastic tissue fibers in patient's with Marfan's syndrome; they varied from mild to severe. Elastic fibers in the lungs of patients with cutis laxa showed by light and electron microscopy the same morphologic changes previously reported in the skin and vessels. While the alterations in individual elastic fibers in the alveolar septa appeared similar, in cutix laxa t

Association between Elastic Modulus of Foot Soft Tissues and Gait Characteristics in Young Individuals with Flatfoot.

Flatfoot is a common foot deformity, causing foot pain, osteoarthritis of the midfoot, and even knee and hip dysfunction. The elastic modulus of foot soft tissues and its association with gait biomechanics still remain unclear. For this study, we recruited 20 young individuals with flatfoot and 22 age-matched individuals with normal foot arches. The elastic modulus of foot soft tissues (posterior tibial tendon, flexor digitorum brevis, plantar fascia, heel fat pad) was obtained via ultrasound elastography. Gait data were acquired using an optical motion capture system. The association between

Comparison of fetal and maternal tissue elasticity between euploid and aneuploid pregnancies by shear wave elastography.

AIM: B-mode ultrasonography utilized for fetal screening of common trisomies is referred to as a genetic sonogram and includes determining major abnormalities and soft markers such as hypoplastic nasal bone and increased thickness of the nuchal fold. Elastography is a novel ultrasound technique giving information about tissue stiffness used for diagnosing cancer, transplant rejection, and organ fibrosis. This study aimed to determine via shear wave elastography (SWE) whether euploid and aneuploid fetal soft marker tissues vary in stiffness. METHODS: The participants were all singleton pregnan

A novel application of the principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) to the fatigue behavior of tendon tissue.

BACKGROUND: Experiments on the fatigue of tendons have shown that cyclic loading induces failure at stresses lower than the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the tendons. The number of cycles to failure (Nf) has been shown to be dependent upon the magnitude of the applied cyclic stress. METHOD OF APPROACH: Utilizing data collected by Schechtman (1995), we demonstrate that the principles of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) can be used to predict the fatigue behavior of tendons under cyclic loading for maximum stress levels that are higher than 10% of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS

Actinically degenerate elastic tissue is the likely antigenic basis of actinic granuloma of the skin and of temporal arteritis.

Staining technique is paramount for detecting and assessing the severe degeneration that occurs in the elastic tissues of the skin and its arteries in response to prolonged exposure to actinic radiation. With a selective "controlled" hematoxylin-and-eosin stain, actinically damaged ("elastotic") elastic tissue stains blue, as Unna described, and contrasts with normal and simply hyperplastic elastic tissue, which stains red. "Special" elastic stains such as Orcein and Verhoeff do not demonstrate this difference. When resorptive (elastolytic) giant cell reactions develop in relation to actinical

Single nucleotide polymorphisms and domain/splice variants modulate assembly and elastomeric properties of human elastin. Implications for tissue specificity and durability of elastic tissue.

Polymeric elastin provides the physiologically essential properties of extensibility and elastic recoil to large arteries, heart valves, lungs, skin and other tissues. Although the detailed relationship between sequence, structure and mechanical properties of elastin remains a matter of investigation, data from both the full-length monomer, tropoelastin, and smaller elastin-like polypeptides have demonstrated that variations in protein sequence can affect both polymeric assembly and tensile mechanical properties. Here we model known splice variants of human tropoelastin (hTE), assessing effect

Color Doppler tissue imaging in assessing the elastic properties of the aorta and in predicting coronary artery disease.

We hypothesized that the change in aortic elastic properties could directly be shown with color Doppler tissue imaging (CDTI), that these findings could be related to aortic stiffness and distensibility and that, through these, coronary artery disease (CAD) could be predicted. One hundred and twenty six patients (group I: 83 with CAD, mean age 54+/-10 years, 18 female, 65 male; group II: 43 without CAD, mean age 53+/-10 years, 27 female, 16 male) having been evaluated for coronary artery disease by angiography were examined by echocardiography.
