Brain tissue electrical conductivity as a promising biomarker for dementia assessment using MRI.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease, involves cognitive decline linked to amyloid beta (Aβ) and tau protein aggregation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based brain tissue conductivity, which increases in dementia, may serve as a non-invasive biomarker for protein aggregation. We investigate the relationship between MRI-based brain electrical conductivity, protein aggregation, cognition, and gene expression. METHODS: Brain conductivity maps were reconstructed and correlated with PET protein signals, cognitive performance, and plasma protein levels. The diagnostic potenti

Electrical stimulation and conductive materials: electrophysiology-based treatment for spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury is a serious disease of the central nervous system. The electrophysiological properties of the spinal cord that are essential to maintaining neurotransmission can be impaired after the injury. Therefore, electrophysiological evaluation is becoming an important indicator of the injury extent or the therapeutic outcomes by reflecting the potential propagation of neural pathways. On the other hand, the repair of damaged nerves is one of the main goals of spinal cord injury treatment. Growing research interest has been concentrated on developing effective therapeutic solutions t

Data-driven electrical conductivity brain imaging using 3 T MRI.

Magnetic resonance electrical properties tomography (MR-EPT) is a non-invasive measurement technique that derives the electrical properties (EPs, e.g., conductivity or permittivity) of tissues in the radiofrequency range (64 MHz for 1.5 T and 128 MHz for 3 T MR systems). Clinical studies have shown the potential of tissue conductivity as a biomarker. To date, model-based conductivity reconstructions rely on numerical assumptions and approximations, leading to inaccuracies in the reconstructed maps. To address such limitations, we propose an artificial neural network (ANN)-based non-linear cond

A comparison of three conducted electrical weapons in a surrogate swine cardiac safety model.

We used a previously described methodology in a swine model to compare the relative cardiac safety of the Axon T7 Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW), released in October of 2018, to two prior generations of Axon CEWs to include the X2 and the X26E. A total of 5 swine (252 total CEW exposures) were tested by alternating the three weapons at each chest exposure location. Our testing, using systemic hypotension as the quantitative surrogate for cardiac capture, demonstrated that the T7 and X2 were not statistically different. Both were superior, in terms of reduced hypotension during exposure, to

Chitosan-PVA-CNT nanofibers as electrically conductive scaffolds for cardiovascular tissue engineering.

Conductive scaffolds are suitable candidates for cardiovascular tissue engineering (CTE) due to their similarity to the extracellular matrix of native tissue. Here, nanofiber scaffolds based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CS), and different concentrations of carbon nanotube (CNT) were produced using electrospinning. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image, mechanical test (elastic modulus: 130 ± 3.605 MPa), electrical conductivity (3.4 × 10-6 S/Cm), water uptake, cell adhesion, and cell viability (>80%) results of the PVA-CS-CNT1 scaffold revealed that the nanofiber containing 1% of CN

Electrically Conducting and Mechanically Strong Graphene-Polylactic Acid Composites for 3D Printing.

The advent of 3D printing has had a disruptive impact in manufacturing and can potentially revolutionize industrial fields. Thermoplastic materials printable into complex structures are widely employed for 3D printing. Polylactic acid (PLA) is among the most promising polymers used for 3D printing, owing to its low cost, biodegradability, and nontoxicity. However, PLA is electrically insulating and mechanically weak; this limits its use in a variety of 3D printing applications. This study demonstrates a straightforward and environment-friendly method to fabricate conductive and mechanically re

Anisotropic conductivity tensor by analyzing diffusion tensor for electrical brain stimulation (EBS).

Electrical brain stimulation (EBS) is a promising medical treatment method for brain neurological disorders through the direct or indirect excitation by injecting an electric current. At present, it is difficult to directly measure the distribution of the electric current delivered by electrodes inside tissues. By applying low-frequency ([Formula: see text]1 kHz) external electrical brain stimulation (EBS), the low-frequency conductivity around the cells is uneven due to asymmetric cellular structures. We propose a method of electrical property imaging using the measured one component magnetic

In-Plane Anisotropies of Polarized Raman Response and Electrical Conductivity in Layered Tin Selenide.

The group IV-VI compound tin selenide (SnSe) has recently attracted particular interest due to its unexpectedly low thermal conductivity and high power factor and shows great promise for thermoelectric applications. With an orthorhombic lattice structure, SnSe displays intriguing anisotropic properties due to the low symmetry of the puckered in-plane lattice structure. When thermoelectric materials, such as SnSe, have decreased dimensionality, their thermoelectric conversion efficiency may be improved due to increased power factor and decreased thermal conductivity. Therefore, it is necessary

Mechanisms of Electrical Activation and Conduction in the Gastrointestinal System: Lessons from Cardiac Electrophysiology.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is an electrically excitable organ system containing multiple cell types, which coordinate electrical activity propagating through this tract. Disruption in its normal electrophysiology is observed in a number of GI motility disorders. However, this is not well characterized and the field of GI electrophysiology is much less developed compared to the cardiac field. The aim of this article is to use the established knowledge of cardiac electrophysiology to shed light on the mechanisms of electrical activation and propagation along the GI tract, and how abnormalit

Large-scale hierarchically structured conjugated polymer assemblies with enhanced electrical conductivity.

Stripes on a plane: A set of highly ordered microscopic stripes (purple; see scheme) were produced over a large area by using controlled evaporative self-assembly in a cylinder-on-Si geometry of conjugated homopolymers or all-conjugated diblock copolymer (P3BHT). The crystallinity of the as-prepared assemblies of P3BHT was greatly improved following chloroform vapor annealing, resulting in a fourfold increase in electrical conductivity.

Electrical conductivity measurement: a new technique to detect iatrogenic initial pedicle perforation.

Pedicle screw fixation has achieved significant popularity amongst spinal surgeons for both single and multi-level spinal fusion. Misplacement and pedicle cortical violation occurs in over 20% of screw placement and can result in potential complications such as dysthesia, paraparesis or paraplegia. There have been many advances in techniques available for navigating through the pedicle; however, these techniques are not without drawbacks. A new electrical conductivity-measuring device, previously evaluated on the porcine model to detect the pedicle violation, was evaluated amongst nine Europea

Magnitude and modulation of pancreatic beta-cell gap junction electrical conductance in situ.

The parallel gap junction electrical conductance between a beta-cell and its nearest neighbors was measured by using an intracellular microelectrode to clamp the voltage of a beta-cell within a bursting islet of Langerhans. The holding current records consisted of bursts of inward current due to the synchronized oscillations in membrane potential of the surrounding cells. The membrane potential record of the impaled cell, obtained in current clamp mode, was used to estimate the behavior of the surrounding cells during voltage clamp, and the coupling conductance was calculated by dividing the m

[Recording and data processing of electrical signals of the specific atrioventricular conduction pathways in man].

Signals of the electrical activity of the specific atrioventricular conduction pathways were recorded with an unipolar lead to obtain an exact time reference. The amplifier used had special characteristics: high gain settings (up to 300,000), very low noise levels, and wide filter range (2 Hz - 1,600 Hz). The low amplitude of the signals under study, of the order of a microvolt, and the wide filter range of the amplifier necessitated placing the patient in a Faraday cage. The signals recorded on magnetic tape were treated by a system of analysis for signal treatment. The method of averaging wa

Radiofrequency electrical conductivity reveals a distinct dimension of early human brain development.

Quantitative MRI has characterised early human brain development primarily through measures of water mobility, leaving other biophysical properties of maturing tissue unexplored. Here we show that radiofrequency electrical conductivity, reflecting ionic composition, membrane density and extracellular geometry in addition to water content, can be extracted retrospectively and at scale from the phase of conventional MRI acquisitions, revealing a distinct dimension of early brain tissue maturation and state. Applying electrical property tomography to 888 neonatal MRI sessions (784 subjects, 26-45

Over-Penetration Risk of TASER 10 Conducted Electrical Weapon Darts in Humans.

The TASER™ T10® (T10) is a new generation of conducted electrical weapon (CEW) introduced in 2023. T10 has significant new technology enhancements related to the deployed darts. These darts are thin-diameter, low-profile projectiles launched by primer-ignited black-powder instead of compressed nitrogen used in previous model launch platforms. They are also launched at higher muzzle velocity (62.5±9.1m/s or 205±30 feet/s) than previous CEW darts, to assist with enhanced target adherence. We retrospectively examined digital images of human tissue that had 40 T10 darts fired into it at measured v

Structural influence of knitting patterns on mechanical, electrical and durability characteristics of conductive fabrics.

This study investigates the influence of knitting structure on the electrical performance and durability of conductive fabrics for smart clothing applications. Fabrics with plain (PN), cable (CB), and miss (MS) stitches were knitted using cotton and silver-coated yarns, and subjected to ten cycles of artificial perspiration immersion and washing (PW). Despite using the least amount of conductive yarn, the MS structure exhibited the lowest surface resistance (3.18 Ω/m2) and the highest heating temperature (156 °C), due to its floating segments. In contrast, the CB structure showed the highest r

Investigation of electrical conductivity changes during brain functional activity in 3T MRI.

Blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is widely used to visualize brain activation regions by detecting hemodynamic responses associated with increased metabolic demand. Although alternative MRI methods have been employed to monitor functional activities, the investigation of in-vivo electrical property changes during brain function remains limited. In this study, the relationship between fMRI signals and electrical conductivity (measured at the Larmor frequency) changes was explored using phase-based electrical property tomography. Results revealed con

Transcriptomic Analysis Reveals the Heterogeneous Role of Conducting Films Upon Electrical Stimulation.

Central nervous system (CNS) injuries and neurodegenerative diseases have markedly poor prognoses and can result in permanent dysfunction due to the general inability of CNS neurons to regenerate. Differentiation of transplanted stem cells has emerged as a therapeutic avenue to regenerate tissue architecture in damaged areas. Electrical stimulation is a promising approach for directing the differentiation outcomes and pattern of outgrowth of transplanted stem cells, however traditional inorganic bio-electrodes can induce adverse effects such as inflammation. Development of an Electrically Conductive MDF Panel-Evaluation of Carbon Content and Resin Type.

Electronics in furniture and construction materials, in particular technologies which allow for a flexible and cable-free connection of electronics in such materials, are gaining broader interest. This study shows a further development of a concept to obtain highly conductive medium-density fibreboard panels (MDF) for furniture application. MDF were produced using two mixing processes (wet and dry) for wood and carbon fibres to investigate the effects of resin type (urea formaldehyde (UF) and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI)) and carbon fibre content on their mechanical, physic

Review on electrically conductive smart nerve guide conduit for peripheral nerve regeneration.

At present, peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) are one of the leading causes of substantial impairment around the globe. Complete recovery of nerve function after an injury is challenging. Currently, autologous nerve grafts are being used as a treatment; however, this has several downsides, for example, donor site morbidity, shortage of donor sites, loss of sensation, inflammation, and neuroma development. The most promising alternative is the development of a nerve guide conduit (NGC) to direct the restoration and renewal of neuronal axons from the proximal to the distal end to facilitate nerve
