The incomparable fascination of comparative physiology: 40 years with animals in the field and laboratory.

This paper is not meant to be a review article. Instead, it gives an overview of the major research projects that the author, together with his students, colleagues and collaborators, has worked on. Although the main focus of the author's work has always been the fish lateral line, this paper is mainly about all the other research projects he did or that were done in his laboratory. These include studies on fishing spiders, weakly electric fish, seals, water rats, bottom dwelling sharks, freshwater rays, venomous snakes, birds of prey, fire loving beetles and backswimmers. The reasons for this

Concentrations of PCBs, organochlorine pesticides and heavy metals (lead, cadmium, and copper) in fish from the Drôme river: potential effects on otters (Lutra lutra).

In this study samples of ten species of fish were analyzed for concentrations of organochlorine pesticides, PCBs and heavy metals (Pb, Cd, and Cu). Fish were captured using electric fishing on ten sites along the Drôme river (Rhône-Alpes region). Quantitative determination of the organochlorine and PCBs compounds was performed by gas chromatography-electron-capture detection (GC-ECD). The concentrations of heavy metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Samples contained detectable concentrations of lindane, PCBs, and heavy metals but at concentrations below the maximum re

Dense-cored vesicle-containing components of the terminal nerve of sharks and rays.

This paper describes electron microscopic observations of dense-cored vesicle-containing axons, cell bodies, and endings of the terminal nerve in several elasmobranchs. The vesicles are found in two apparent cell types, one with a polymorphic nucleus and another with an oval nucleus. The types may correspond to cells producing one each of two neuropeptides (LHRH and FMRF-amide) that have previously been localized in the nerve. Dense-cored vesicles are found in many unmyelinated fibers in both the terminal nerve proper and its major ganglia. Some of these form complicated structures with interd

Packet information encoding in a cerebellum-like circuit.

Packet information encoding of neural signals was proposed for vision about 50 years ago and has recently been revived as a plausible strategy generalizable to natural and artificial sensory systems. It involves discrete image segmentation controlled by feedback and the ability to store and compare packets of information. This article shows that neurons of the cerebellum-like electrosensory lobe (EL) of the electric fish Gymnotus omarorum use spike-count and spike-timing distribution as constitutive variables of packets of information that encode one-by-one the electrosensory images generated

Radiological changes during fracture and repair in neural and haemal spines of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

Although spinal injuries in fish have been associated with electric stimuli applied during electrofishing and electrotrawling, bone fracture and repair in the axial skeleton have yet not been studied. To study this, we radiographed a group (n = 64) of individually tagged farmed cod twice, with a 1-year interval (∼36 cm at first and ∼ 50 cm at second inspection). The study focus was on the neural and haemal spines. These structures are un-paired and are not covered by other bones laterally, making them useful for radiological studies on axial skeletal fracture in live fish. At the first examina

Characterization of Edwardsiella Strains Isolated from Fish in The Netherlands (1995-2020) Shows a Relationship Between Edwardsiella Species and Source.

To date, four species of the genus Edwardsiella-E. tarda, E. ictaluri, E. piscicida, and E. anguilarum-have been identified as the cause of disease and mortality in various fish species. Thirty-six Edwardsiella strains isolated from different fish species in the Netherlands were identified using multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) based on sequence analysis of the genes gyrB, pgi and phoU. In parallel, an Edwardsiella matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) database was created by analyzing peptide spectra of a subset of these strains belongi

Two proteocephalid cestodes in the fish Malapterurus electricus and Heterobranchus bidorsalis from Lake Nasser, Egypt: a morphological, molecular, and histopathological study.

Despite the importance of the electric catfish (Malapterurus electricus) and the African giant catfish (Heterobranchus bidorsalis) in the foodweb of Lake Nasser, Egypt, little is known about their diseases and parasitic fauna. This work describes, for the first time, cestodiasis in M. electricus and H. bidorsalis. Corallobothrium solidum and Proteocephalus sp. were identified morphologically and molecularly from M. electricus and H. bidorsalis, respectively. Using PCR, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis, the two cestodes shared rRNA gene sequence similarities yet were unique and the two new

An eclectic encounter: ticks feeding on an electric eel and the untapped potential of natural history collections.

Parasites are quite likely the most diverse guild of species on earth. Nevertheless, they remain under-documented despite their impact on the health and ecology of nearly every other species. Natural history collections offer a powerful, underutilized resource for uncovering the hidden diversity of parasites, particularly by preserving specimens that reveal unexpected host-parasite associations. Ticks, although known for their broad host range among terrestrial vertebrates, have never been documented parasitizing fish. Here, the author reports the first known instance of ticks associated with

Strategies to lower methyl mercury concentrations in hydroelectric reservoirs and lakes: A review.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations in fish in lakes are elevated due to increased global cycling of Hg. A special case of elevated Hg concentrations in fish occurs in new hydroelectric reservoirs because of increased rates of converting Hg in the environment into methyl mercury (MeHg). People and wildlife that eat fish from hydroelectric reservoirs have an elevated risk of accumulating too much MeHg. Demand for electrical energy is leading to the creation of new reservoirs. In 2005, Canada derived 60% of its electricity from hydroelectric reservoirs. As a result, hydroelectric companies and governing

[Topography of the ampulla of Lorenzini system of Raja clavata and its role in electroorientation].

A detailed scheme is presented of the peripheral region of electroreceptive system of Raja clavata. These morphological data are used to calculate the overall energetic directional diagram (DD), i. e. response of the ampullary apparatus to the direction of uniform electric field strength vector. The calculations show that the overall DD of two major ampullar groups has a circular appearance. The experimentally obtained thresholds to electric stimulations determined from recordings of the vegetative reaction (respiratory reflex) are also circular. The data obtained allow suggesting that Raja cl

The influence of taipoxin on cholinergic synapses in the electric organ of Torpedo marmorata.

The influences of the snake venom taipoxin on the cholinergic synapses of the electric organ of Torpedo mamorata were investigated. 1. In ultrathin sections presynaptic membrane indentations are noted under the influence of taipoxin/NaCl. 2. The presynaptic membranes often show small interruptions. 3. In taipoxin/horseradish peroxidase incubated organ pieces typical omega-shaped indentations are found, but on the postsynaptic side. 4. The vesicle density decreased under the influence of the taipoxin in contrast untreated cholinergic synapses. 5. In freeze etched preparations no membrane indent

Skin physiological changes in employees in the fish processing industry immediately following work. A field study.

In order to explain the complaints of dry skin after work among employees in the fish processing industry, we followed the skin blood flow (SBF), skin surface temperature, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and electrical capacitance on the volar aspect of the 3rd finger in 10 fillet workers, where measurements were performed just at the end of a working day and during the next hour. The results were compared with 10 normal controls. During work, a low SBF, temperature and TEWL, and a high capacitance were found. After work, the SBF, temperature and TEWL increased to values above normal within 1

Distribution of somatostatin (SRIF) in the brain and pituitary of Eigenmannia lineata (Gymnotiformes, Teleostei). An immunohistochemical study.

Somatostatin-immunoreactive (SRIFi) cells in the brain and pituitary of the weakly-electric teleost Eigenmannia lineata were identified immunohistochemically by the use of unlabelled antibodies and the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique. Several groups of neurons and fibres were immunostained in Eigenmannia's brain. Intensely SRIFi neurons occurred in the nucleus entopeduncularis, in the nucleus preaeopticus, and in the nucleus dorsolateralis between the commissura posterior and the nucleus glomerulosus, the latter two structures being completely devoid of immunoreactive elements. Few weakly-

Dynamics of (total and methyl) mercury in sediment, fish, and crocodiles in an Amazonian Lake and risk assessment of fish consumption to the local population.

Increasing concerns have been raised about the toxicity of mercury (Hg) to humans, especially for those that consume a great amount of fish. High Hg concentrations have previously been measured in Amazonian waterbodies, both resulting from natural and anthropogenic sources. However, few studies have been conducted so far in Amazonian lakes that are fished by local populations. In addition, few of those studies included methylmercury (MeHg), the most toxic and bioaccumulative Hg form, and evaluated the influence of physico-chemical conditions and season on Hg dynamics. In the present study, tot

Bionic Fish-Shaped Triboelectric-Electromagnetic Hybrid Generator via a Two-Stage Swing Mechanism for Water Flow Energy Harvesting and Condition Monitoring.

The water flow energy of rivers is an important renewable and clean energy that plays a vital role in human life but is challenging to harvest at low flow velocity. This work proposes a bionic fish-shaped triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid generator (BF-TEHG) via a two-stage swing mechanism for harvesting water flow energy. It is designed to simulate the shape of fish, effectively improving its ability to utilize low-velocity water flow energy and enabling it to operate at a minimum flow rate of 0.24 m/s. Furthermore, the impact of motion parameters on electrical performance is studied. The

[Morpho-functional changes in mauthner neurons of goldfish adapted to prolonged orthodromic stimulation of acoustic nerve in vitro].

In newly-hatched goldfish the adapted state was developed using repeated short-term stimulation of the vestibular apparatus. It differed from the non-adapted state by the absence of fatigue during the turns of fishes produced by unilateral tail fin flicks in ring channel. Electrophysiological study of Mauthner neurons (MN) in adapted goldfish using the slices of medulla oblongata incubated in vitro, has shown the preservation of the amplitude of the extracellular responses after prolonged orthodromic electric stimulation of acoustic nerve, which suppressed the responses of non-adapted MN. Thus

Evidence of chitin in the ampullae of Lorenzini of chondrichthyan fishes.

We previously reported that the polysaccharide chitin, a key component of arthropod exoskeletons and fungal cell walls, is endogenously produced by fishes and amphibians in spite of the widely held view that it was not synthesized by vertebrates [1]. Genes encoding chitin synthase enzymes were found in the genomes of a number of fishes and amphibians and shown to be correspondingly expressed at the sites where chitin was localized [1,2]. In this report, we present evidence suggesting that chitin is prevalent within the specialized electrosensory organs of cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes).

Methods of humane killing of laboratory fish: FELASA Working Group recommendations.

As commissioned by the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations, these working group recommendations define the requirements to achieve the humane killing of fish, compare methods of killing, recommend methods of killing depending on context, and detail protocols leading to good practice. With a review of current practices in a fish laboratory and available literature to guide the recommendations, the concept of ideal euthanasia is discussed, and the dilemma of a prompt but stressful death versus a slow but stress-free experience is introduced. Noticeably, the context of f

Diarrhea in ciguatera fish poisoning: preliminary evaluation of pathophysiological mechanisms.

Ciguatera fish poisoning is a clinical syndrome consisting of a combination of gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms occurring after eating toxin-containing tropical reef fish; it is a major cause of morbidity in Hawaii, the South Pacific, Australia, and the Caribbean. In an effort to define pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for the diarrheal component of the illness, we examined the effect of crude and fractionated toxin preparations on isolated rabbit ileal tissue in a Ussing chamber model. Both the crude toxin preparation (prepared from toxic Ctenochaetus strigosus) and 10% and
