High-Performance Gelatin Eutectogel Dressing for Infection Prevention and Electrical Stimulation-Assisted Wound Therapy.

Conventional gelatin-based hydrogel wound dressings suffer from weak mechanical properties, poor temperature stability, and slow wound healing, limiting their practical application. Herein, a novel multifunctional gelatin-based eutectogel dressing (PGEWD) was developed via a multicross-linked network constructed from porcine skin gelatin (PG), ε-polylysine (EPL), waterborne polyurethane (WPU), and deep eutectic solvent (DES, choline chloride-glycerol). DES induced PG molecular chain rearrangement to form a dense triple-helix structure. With the optimal formulation of 10% EPL, 0.3% WPU, and 10

Electrical Stimulation Therapy to Accelerate Nerve Regeneration Remains Effective Following Postoperative Application of Lidocaine.

BACKGROUND: Brief electrical stimulation (ES) of injured peripheral nerves for 1 hour has been shown to accelerate nerve regeneration with proximal action potential conduction to the neuron cell body, a requirement to elicit therapeutic benefit. Local anesthetic is often used to manage pain in patients. However, using lidocaine after ES therapy has been controversial. We assessed the effects of extraneural usage of lidocaine after ES therapy on nerve regeneration in a rodent nerve injury model. METHODS: Lewis rats underwent tibial nerve transection and immediate repair and randomized to 4 gro

Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy for Retraining Reaching and Grasping After Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke.

Neurological conditions like hemiplegia following stroke or tetraplegia following spinal cord injury, result in a massive compromise in motor function. Each of the two conditions can leave individuals dependent on caregivers for the rest of their lives. Once medically stable, rehabilitation is the main stay of treatment. This article will address rehabilitation of upper extremity function. It is long known that moving the affected limb is crucial to recovery following any kind of injury. Overtime, it has also been established that just moving the affected extremities does not suffice, and that

Addition of Probiotics to Anti-Obesity Therapy by Percutaneous Electrical Stimulation of Dermatome T6. A Pilot Study.

Obesity is becoming a pandemic and percutaneous electrical stimulation (PENS) of dermatome T6 has been demonstrated to reduce stomach motility and appetite, allowing greater weight loss than isolated hypocaloric diets. However, modulation of intestinal microbiota could improve this effect and control cardiovascular risk factors. Our objective was to test whether addition of probiotics could improve weight loss and cardiovascular risk factors in obese subjects after PENS and a hypocaloric diet. A pilot prospective study was performed in patients (n = 20) with a body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2.

Effect of electrical stimulation therapy of the lower esophageal sphincter in GERD patients with ineffective esophageal motility.

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation therapy (EST) of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a novel technique in antireflux surgery. Due to the minimal alteration at the LES during surgery, LES-EST is meant to be ideal for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and ineffective esophageal motility (IEM). The aim of this prospective trial (NCT03476265) is to evaluate health-related quality of life and esophageal acid exposure after LES-EST in patients with GERD and IEM. METHODS: This is a prospective non-randomized open-label study. Patients with GERD and IEM undergoing LES-EST we

Neuralgia associated with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy in a patient initially diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder.

Head and neck neoplasms may be difficult to detect because of wide-ranging symptoms and the presence of overlapping anatomic structures in the region. This case report describes a patient with chronic otalgia and temporomandibular disorder, who developed sudden-onset neuralgia while receiving transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy. Further diagnostic evaluation revealed a skull base tumor consistent with adenoid cystic carcinoma. To our knowledge, this is the first report of TENS-associated neuralgia leading to a diagnosis of primary intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma.

High-frequency electrical stimulation can be a complementary therapy to promote nerve regeneration in diabetic rats.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether 1 mA of percutaneous electrical stimulation (ES) at 0, 2, 20, or 200 Hz augments regeneration between the proximal and distal nerve stumps in streptozotocin diabetic rats. A10-mm gap was made in the diabetic rat sciatic nerve by suturing the stumps into silicone rubber tubes. Normal animals were used as the controls. Starting 1 week after transection, ES was applied between the cathode placed at the distal stump and the anode at the proximal stump every other day for 3 weeks. At 4 weeks after surgery, the normal controls and the groups receivin

Transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation in preventing and treating nausea and vomiting in patients receiving electroconvulsive therapy.

A significant number of patients complain of nausea after general anesthesia and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Nausea is second only to headache as the most frequent and troublesome systemic side effect of ECT. The most common treatment of this is antiemetic drugs. Transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation (TAES) is a nonpharmacologic method for preventing and treating nausea and vomiting. TAES can alleviate motion sickness, reduce the incidence of vomiting caused by chemotherapy, and treat pregnancy-induced nausea and vomiting. TAES has been shown to reduce the incidence of postoperat

Creating an engaging brain computer interface, electrical stimulation therapy for children with hemiparesis: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal stroke can lead to lifelong physical disabilities, where even small improvements in motor function can increase quality of life. Rapid brain development in children provides an opportunity to harness brain plasticity. Current therapies are minimally effective due in part to the boring, unengaging procedures required to achieve adequate repetitions required for therapeutic benefit. The combination of brain computer interface and functional electrical stimulation (BCI-FES) may be effective for adults with stroke-induced hemiparesis and appears feasible in children. We desig

Trans-Spinal Electrical Stimulation Therapy for Functional Rehabilitation after Spinal Cord Injury: Review.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most debilitating injuries in the world. Complications after SCI, such as respiratory issues, bowel/bladder incontinency, pressure ulcers, autonomic dysreflexia, spasticity, pain, etc., lead to immense suffering, a remarkable reduction in life expectancy, and even premature death. Traditional rehabilitations for people with SCI are often insignificant or ineffective due to the severity and complexity of the injury. However, the recent development of noninvasive electrical neuromodulation treatments to the spinal cord have shed a ray of hope for these indi
