Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most common entrapment neuropathy. It is diagnosed with electrodiagnostic studies, but they can yield false-negative results. Ultrasound was used to examine 4 patients with UNE and negative electrodiagnostic findings, and it showed ulnar nerve enlargement near the elbow in all cases, with a mean cross-sectional area of 20.1 mm. This indicates that ultrasound may be a useful tool for assessing those with UNE symptoms and normal electrodiagnostic findings.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely employed in the diagnosis of lumbar spine disorders, such as lumbar spinal stenosis or lumbar disc herniation. However, incomplete specificity is a definite drawback, given that MRI abnormalities are frequently identified in aged control subjects. Relying solely on MRI without considering clinical symptoms/signs or electrodiagnosis may lead to misdiagnosis. In contrast, electrodiagnostic tests are generally considered to have higher specificity than MRI, making them more useful for preventing unnecessary surgeries. Needle EMG can clarify the distribut

Despite being the most common entrapment neuropathy and the most common reason for referral to the electromyography (EMG) laboratory, the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) continues to be challenging due to a large number of electrodiagnostic (EDX) tests available. We present a flowchart and propose a practical approach to the diagnosis of CTS using the available literature and the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) guidelines and the Practice Parameter for Electrodiagnostic Studies in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is difficult in patients with diabetic polyneuropathy as both conditions may affect median nerve conduction in a similar manner. There is no agreement about which electrodiagnostic tests are more efficient in determining CTS accurately in these patients. In this study, we aimed to define the best electrodiagnostic test in the diagnosis of CTS in diabetic polyneuropathy patients.
METHODS: We prospectively investigated 72 patients with CTS (140 hands), 32 patients with diabetic polyneuropathy without CTS (61 hands), 35 patients with diabetic

Electrodiagnostic studies are valuable in confirming the diagnosis of a disorder of neuromuscular transmission. They are used to distinguish presynaptic and postsynaptic abnormalities. These studies provide an objective measure of the severity of the illness and may be useful in assessing the response to therapy. This article reviews the electrodiagnostic techniques that are commonly used today and highlights their specificity, sensitivity, and pitfalls.

Segmental electrodiagnosis of compression of individual nerve roots of the cauda equina has been attempted in 45 patients, including cases of disc hernia, spondylsis and spondylolisthesis. The needle electrode was inserted into the nerve root either just lateral to the intervetebral foramen or through the posterior sacral foramen. The recordings made on stimulating a single nerve root were somatosensory evoked potential, the cauda equina action potential and the M and H waves. Mixed spinal nerve root action potentials were also recorded by stimulating the sciatic, peroneal and tibial nerves. I

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by degeneration of upper motor neurons in the motor cortex and lower motor neurons (LMN) in the brainstem and spinal cord, resulting in a progressive functional impairment. Neurophysiology is a diagnostic tool to detect dysfunction of upper motor neurons and LMN, even when the changes are subclinical. Electromyography is the standard neurophysiological investigation to detect LMN changes, which is essential to exclude mimicking disorders and attain early diagnosis. Recently, Awaji criteria was proposed to support ALS diagnosis, in these crit

INTRODUCTION: In ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), we determined how electrodiagnostic cutoffs [across-elbow ulnar motor conduction velocity slowing (AECV-slowing), drop in across-elbow vs. forearm CV (AECV-drop)] depend on pretest probability (PreTP).
METHODS: Fifty clinically defined UNE patients and 50 controls underwent ulnar conduction testing recording abductor digiti minimi (ADM) and first dorsal interosseous (FDI), stimulating wrist, below-elbow, and 6-, 8-, and 10-cm more proximally. For various PreTPs of UNE, the cutoffs required to confirm UNE (defined as posttest probability =

BACKGROUND: An electrodiagnostic evaluation is conducted to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and evaluate its severity.
OBJECTIVE: This study proposes a revised approach for classifying the severity of electrophysiological findings for patients with CTS.
METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included patients with CTS confirmed through electrodiagnostic evaluations. Based on the Stevens' classification, the patients were divided into three groups (mild/moderate/severe). A new intermediate group was defined to identify patients with normal motor nerve conduction studies and a

INTRODUCTION: The most efficient method of performing electrophysiology for Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is unknown.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed electrophysiological data of 97 consecutive GBS patients from Birmingham, UK (2001-2012), studied ≤ 3 weeks post-onset.
RESULTS: The sensitivity of electrophysiology for each GBS subtype was dependent on the upper and lower limb nerves tested. In acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP), abnormalities were predominant in the arms, whereas leg abnormalities predominated in axonal GBS. In AIDP, the most common abnormal paramete

INTRODUCTION: Australians in rural and remote areas have poorer health and welfare outcomes than urban populations. Rural people are reliant on a consistent workforce to service the population. Attracting and maintaining a health professional workforce in rural Australia has been well documented as an ongoing issue. However, there is a need for research that explicitly investigates the unique factors that impact the recruitment and retention of allied health workers.
METHODS: A scoping review methodology was utilised to investigate the research question: How does the current literature identi

A variety of electrodiagnostic methods are used to confirm the diagnosis of acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP), but difficulties are frequent during the first few weeks of weakness. We compared the nerve conduction studies (NCS) of patients with AIDP to those with critical illness polyneuropathy (CIP), a subacute axonal polyneuropathy. New electrodiagnostic criteria with graded certainty (normal, nondiagnostic, suggestive, highly suggestive, and definite) were designed and applied in a blinded manner to both groups. Among the AIDP patients, 64% met the highly suggestive and

Extensive research has documented that medical care in the United States is not of optimal quality, meaning that well-established care processes are not consistently provided to the patients who would benefit from them. To assess and improve quality of care, specific measures are needed. The objective of this study was to develop quality measures for electrodiagnostic testing in suspected carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We used a variation of the well-established RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method to develop the measures. A physiatrist and quality measurement experts developed draft measures based

Entrapment neuropathy of the ulnar nerve at the elbow, the so-called cubital tunnel syndrome, is the second most frequent focal mononeuropathy after carpal tunnel syndrome in adults. Currently, there is a pressing need to identify cost-effective biomarkers and procedures capable of accurately detecting alterations in ulnar nerve structural and functional integrity. Established electrophysiological techniques, such as motor and sensory nerve conduction studies, along with needle electromyography of specific muscles, represent the gold standard for ulnar nerve electrodiagnosis. Concurrently, the

Electrodiagnostic (EDX) evaluation, and, more specifically, electromyography (EMG), has a well-established role in the diagnostic confirmation of cervical and lumbar radiculopathy. The role of EMG in prognostication, however, is less established and remains a topic of debate. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the diagnostic and prognosticating role of EMG in cervical and lumbar radiculopathies, and to assess the utility of EMG in predicting outcomes after epidural steroid injections (ESI). A review of the existing literature strongly supports a prognosticating role for EDX in predicti
