Electromyography and the immobile vocal fold.

Laryngeal EMG has become a useful tool for the otolaryngologist in the four decades since the pioneering work of Faaborg-Anderson and Buchtal. It is able to distinguish between mechanical limitation and denervation in an immobile vocal fold. In the paralyzed vocal fold, it can guide workup by pointing to the site of the lesion. In the hands of a circumspect clinician, it can provide clinically valuable information regarding prognosis. Useful application of laryngeal EMG must rest on the basic fact that it isa qualitative test. Because of factors like sampling error, interfering signal from nei

An introduction to electromyography: an invited review.

Electromyography is a complex diagnostic test that is useful in diagnosing many neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions. Physiatrists and neurologists become familiar with this test during their training, while other physicians have minimal or no exposure, outside of perhaps some basic physiology lectures. A review of the anatomy, physiology, and physics upon which electrodiagnostic testing is based and of the various techniques used during a study provides the necessary foundation for understanding and using study results. A discussion of the conditions for which electrodiagnostic testin

Electromyography of the diaphragm in neuromuscular disease.

We compared the diaphragmatic electromyographic (EMG) recordings from 32 patients with known neuromuscular disease and respiratory symptoms (23 neuropathies, 9 myopathies) to recordings from 23 normal subjects. Turns analysis of 219-ms sections, or epochs, of the EMG demonstrated a significant overlap between diagnostic groups, although some epochs from neuromuscular patients were significantly different from normal. Empirical rules were derived to infer neuropathic and myopathic involvement of the diaphragmatic EMG.

[Importance of electromyography in the diagnosis of botulism].

Botulism is a cause of neuromuscular transmission impairment. We report here an electrophysiological study of the neuromuscular junction in a patient presenting with botulism. Repetitive stimulation of a motor nerve showed a characteristic triad, indicating presynaptic block of neuromuscular transmission: the muscle action potential amplitude was low; repetitive high frequency stimulation (20 Hz) induced a more than 100% increment in the amplitude; low frequency repetitive stimulation (3 Hz) induced a more than 10% decrement in the amplitude. Progressive clinical improvement spontaneously occu

Electromyography of the human nasal muscles.

Electromyographic (EMG) activity of six nasal muscles was monitored in 17 male volunteers without nasal complaints. Surface electrodes were placed on the nasal skin in such a way that they selectively recorded the activity of these muscles. Recordings were made under different breathing conditions and during voluntary nasal movements. Inspiratory EMG activity was observed during nasal and oral breathing in one or more of the following muscles: dilator naris, nasalis muscle (alar and transverse parts) and apicis nasi. EMG activity increased markedly in response to physical exercise and was more

Quantitative electromyography in polymyositis: a reappraisal.

Manual analysis of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) was performed in 33 patients with polymyositis of whom 16 were studied in the acute stage and 17 in the chronic stage. Contrary to common description of "myopathic potentials" as being of low amplitude, short duration, and polyphasic shape, the quantitated study revealed no difference as to amplitude of short duration MUAPs in patients and normal subjects though short-duration MUAP and short duration polyphasic potentials were 4 and 3 times, respectively, more common in patients than in controls. Although the mean duration of MUAPs usuall

[Electromyography in patients with spastic torticollis].

The article describes the results of electromyographic examination of the muscles of the neck in 26 patients with spasmodic torticollis. Electromyography was performed before and after stereotaxic operative interventions on the nucleus of Cajal or in combination with the diencephalic structures. It is shown that electromyographic examination of patients, especially with the use of functional motor and oculomotor tests, widens essentially the possibilities of the diagnosis by facilitating the identification or specification of the predominantly involved group of muscles. The discovery of concur

Electromyography of the larynx and related technics.

Electrodiagnosis of the laryngeal muscles by electromyography, neuromyography and reflexmyography enables diagnosis, follow up and prognosis of vocal cord palsies as well as indications for surgery. The development of new endoscopes now permits direct inspection of the oropharyngeal and endolaryngeal muscles. A method of transoral electromyography of laryngeal muscles in the awake patient has been established using these zoom-endoscopes for supervision of the transoral placement of needle or hooked-wire electrodes into the muscular agonists and antagonists of the larynx. [Results of electromyography studies of the rectosigmoid].

In 80 clinically examined patients aged 9 to 67 years the basal myoelectric activity (BER) in the rectosigmoid was registered by using an intraluminally placed hexapolar ring electrode. The frequency analysis of the sinusoidal variations showed for the patients of the normal group predominantly (14 from 18) a mean frequency of the BER of 6 to 9 cycles per minute, for the patients suffering from functional diarrhea a slow frequency of 2.5 to 5 cycles per minute, for patients with obstipation of chronic intestinal diseases no uniform frequency behaviour, and for patients with diverticulosis pred

Endoscopic electromyography of the sphincter of Oddi.

Endoscopic electromyography of the human sphincter of ODDI has provided useful information for the patho-physiological studies on the choledocho-duodenal junction. The pattern and rhythm of the electromyogram observed on the spincter of ODDI were different from those of the duodenum recorded simultaneously in basal tracings of our initial four cases. In the half of other ten cases with consecutive tracings, the different pattern and rhythm of electromyograms between the sphincter of ODDI and the duodenum were also confirmed. It was possible, from our results, to speculate that the functional i

[Electromyography in children with obstetrical paralysis].

The author for the first time conducted a EMG study of 75 children with obstetrical paralysis of the hands during the neonatal period and in children of an older age. In the majority of the cases there were certain changes of the EMG, characteristic of lesions of the spinal segmentary structures and not of the plexi as it was considered previously. During treatment directed to the area of intumescence, there was not only a clinical, but a EMG improvement as well.

The Utility of the Electromyography and Ultrasound Guidance Combination for Botulinum Neurotoxin Injection: Focus on the Added Value of Electromyography.

The efficacy of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) is strongly dependent on its accurate delivery to hyperactive muscles and, ideally, to motor endplate regions. Although guidance techniques such as electromyography (EMG) and ultrasound (US) improve injection precision, each technique provides only partial information-either functional or anatomical. Integrating these techniques could enhance targeting accuracy, optimize dose distribution, and reduce off-target effects. A structured PubMed search was performed using terms related to BoNT, spasticity/dystonia, EMG, and US. Filters included clinical tr

Single-fiber electromyography in neuromuscular disorders: correlation of muscle histochemistry, single-fiber electromyography, and clinical findings.

We performed single-fiber electromyography (SFEMG) and correlated the results with muscle-biopsy histochemistry in 56 patients with various neuromuscular diseases. Increased muscle-fiber density, delineated by SFEMG, was most prominent in diseases of ordinary denervation, namely motor neuron disorders and peripheral neuropathies, and it correlated with histochemical fiber type grouping. Both phenomena reflect denervation followed by reinnervation. In patients with central core disease and rod disease, fiber density was not increased despite massive type I fiber predominance. The normal distrib

Minimally invasive extraocular cranial nerve electromyography.

OBJECTIVE: A reluctance to monitor extraocular cranial nerve (EOCN) function has restricted skull base surgery worldwide. Spontaneous and triggered electromyography (EMG) monitoring can be recorded intraoperatively to identify and assess potential cranial nerve injury. Determining the conductive function of EOCNs requires the collection of clear, reliable, and repeatable compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) secondary to stimulation. EOCN EMG needle electrodes can, although infrequently, cause ocular morbidity including hematoma, edema, and scleral laceration. The aim of this study was to

Laryngeal electromyography in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Bulbar involvement is a hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but surprisingly very few studies have addressed the frequency, pattern and clinical relevance of laryngeal involvement in the disease. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with spinal-onset ALS underwent nasofibroscopy (NF), followed by laryngeal electromyography (LEMG). We also studied resting activity and motor unit potentials of the genioglossus and masseter muscles. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients presented neurogenic changes in at least one laryngeal muscle. There were fibrillation and/or fasciculation potential
