The Role of Information and Communication Technologies in Social Participation of Older Adults: A Scoping Review.

IMPORTANCE: Social participation is essential for healthy aging, supporting older adults' health and well-being. Although information and communication technologies (ICTs) offer promising opportunities, a focused summary of the literature on ICT use for social participation, a distinct aspect of digital engagement, has been lacking. OBJECTIVE: To summarize existing literature on ICT use for social participation among older adults and identify gaps by examining study characteristics, ICT classifications, and associated health variables. DATA SOURCES: PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL were

The efficacy of life-review as online-guided self-help for adults: a randomized trial.

OBJECTIVES: The study used a randomized controlled trial to investigate the short-term and long-term effects of life-review as online-guided self-help in adults (40+) with moderate depressive symptomatology. We evaluated ego-integrity and rumination as mediators and assessed whether the effects of the intervention did not differ across middle-aged and older adults. METHOD: Effects of life-review (n = 58) were compared with a waiting list group (n = 58) and an expressive writing intervention (n = 58) on depressive symptoms (primary outcome), anxiety, and well-being (secondary outcomes). Characteristics of gamblers using a national online counselling service for problem gambling.

Immediate interventions for a range of health concerns are increasingly being delivered online due to their ease of access and potential to attract new treatment cohorts. This paper describes the development and implementation of a national Australian real time chat and email service for problem gambling. Between September 2009 and September 2011, over 85,000 people visited Gambling Help Online. In addition, 1,722 people engaged in real time chat with trained gambling counsellors, while 299 accessed the email support program. Almost 70 % of people accessing these programs were seeking treatmen

Using electronic surveys to gather information on physician practices during a response to a local epidemic--Rhode Island, 2011.

BACKGROUND: Electronic invitations may improve physician response rates to participate in internet surveys administered by public health agencies. METHODS: Following an increase in reported HIV/syphilis co-infection diagnoses among men-who-have-sex-with-men in Rhode Island, we invited the state's 700 adult primary care and emergency medicine physicians via e-mail to participate in an online, multiple choice survey covering their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding sexually transmitted diseases and HIV testing and prevention. Survey invitations were released in three waves over 28 da

Evaluation of an Email Blood Pressure Measurement Outreach Program.

BACKGROUND: People with hypertension and uncontrolled blood pressure (BP) at their last clinic visit often do not receive follow-up care. We performed a mixed methods evaluation of a healthcare system email and secure message outreach program to improve BP follow-up. METHODS: In July of 2022, patients with hypertension and high BP at their last clinical encounter were sent secure messages asking them to reply with a home BP measurement (HBPM) or have an in-clinic BP check. We assessed the "reach of the program" defined as the proportion and characteristics of patients with versus without a BP

Reducing barriers to colorectal cancer screening via at-home multitarget stool DNA tests.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US, with screening rates at 65% to 70%. This quality improvement project in a Southeast Minnesota health system (SMHS) aimed to enhance CRC screening using multitarget stool DNA (mt-sDNA) test kit delivery. METHODS: Of 13,561 eligible patients ages 45 to 75 years in the SMHS, 12,032 were offered home delivery of mt-sDNA kits through the electronic patient portal. RESULTS: Within 90 days, 1,953 kits (16.2%) were returned, with 158 (8.1%) showing abnormal results, leading to colonoscopy referrals. Communica

Effectiveness and efficiency of an add-on active outreach strategy on research enrollments in a drug intervention trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Adding an active outreach strategy for patients who do not respond to mail invitations may enhance clinical research recruitment; however, the effectiveness of this approach has yet to be formally tested in drug intervention trials. Using the enrollment data from the Management of Cardiovascular disease in chronic Kidney disease (MaCK) randomized trial, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the add-on active outreach compared to the mail invitation-based passive enrollment strategy. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTINGS: We conducted a retrospective analysis

Despite mandated primary series, health care personnel still hesitant about COVID-19 vaccine and immunizing children.

IMPORTANCE: Healthcare personnel (HCP) are important messengers for promoting vaccines, for both adults and children. Our investigation describes perceptions of fully vaccinated HCP about COVID-19 vaccine for themselves and primary series for their children. OBJECTIVE: To determine associations between sociodemographic, employment characteristics and perceptions of COVID-19 vaccines among HCP overall and the subset of HCP with children, who were all mandated to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, in a large US metropolitan region. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey of fully vaccinated HCP from a large i

Internet-based enrollment of a myositis patient cohort-a national experience.

INTRODUCTION: Recruitment for idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) research is a challenge due to the rarity of the disease and the scarcity of specialized myositis centers. Online recruitment may be a feasible alternative to reach rare disease patients. We evaluated various online recruitment methods in a large longitudinal IIM cohort. METHODS: The "Myositis Patient Centered Tele-Research" (My Pacer) is a prospective 6-month observational study of IIM, recruited online and through traditional clinic visits. We utilized diverse recruitment methods, such as physician referrals, social medi

One size does not fit all: using qualitative methods to inform the development of an Internet portal for multiple sclerosis patients.

Disabled and elderly populations are the fastest growing segment of Internet usage. However, these people face an "Inverse Information law"-access to appropriate information is particularly difficult to those who need it the most. Our tertiary care Multiple Sclerosis (MS) center received funding to develop a MS specific patient portal linked to web messaging system so as to empower patients to become more active participants in their health care. In order to design an effective portal, we conducted a qualitative study using focus groups and direct observation techniques. The study explores the

Email recruitment for chronic pain clinical trials: results from the LAMP trial.

BACKGROUND: Recruitment for clinical trials and large-scale studies is challenging, especially for patients with complex conditions like chronic pain. Email recruitment has the potential to increase efficiency, to reduce costs, and to improve access for underrepresented patient populations. The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness, efficiency, and equitability of email versus postal mail recruitment for the Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) study, a three-site clinical trial of mindfulness-based interventions for chronic pain. METHODS: Patients with chronic pain

How new subscribers use cancer-related online mailing lists.

BACKGROUND: Online cancer-related support is an under-studied resource that may serve an important function in the information seeking, care, and support of cancer patients and their families. With over 9.8 million cancer survivors (defined as anyone living with cancer) in the United States alone and the number growing worldwide, it is important to understand how they seek and use online resources to obtain the information they need, when they need it, and in a form and manner appropriate to them. These are stated cancer communication goals of the US National Cancer Institute. OBJECTIVES: Our

A neuroradiology e-mail service for a district general hospital in the COVID-19 era.

BACKGROUND: Hospital care for most neurological patients occurs in district general hospitals (DGHs). The COVID-19 pandemic displaced our DGH weekly neuroradiology meeting to an email service. METHODS: Neuroradiological discrepancies among selected neurological patients were compared between face-to-face (f2f) meetings and an e-mail service. RESULTS: Among 734 consecutively selected patients there was no statistically significant differences in outcomes - frequency of clinically unimportant discrepancies (10.3% e-mail vs 12.8% f2f, p = 0.300) or frequency of clinically important discrepancie

Undergraduate teaching of neurosurgery - what is the current practice in the UK and is there a need for improvement?

There has been concern that the move towards generalism means that specialties, such as neurosurgery, are being pushed out of the undergraduate syllabus. Surveys were created, along with the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, and sent to medical school representatives (MSRs) and neurosurgery programme directors (NPDs) in the United Kingdom (UK). 60% of MSRs and 71% of NPDs responded. Neurosurgical topics were taught by a variety of specialties, and in one medical school, a MSR said that neurosurgery was not taught at all. 83% of MSRs and 80% of NPDs said that neurosurgeons should be mor

Impact of contacting study authors to obtain additional data for systematic reviews: diagnostic accuracy studies for hepatic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Seventeen of 172 included studies in a recent systematic review of blood tests for hepatic fibrosis or cirrhosis reported diagnostic accuracy results discordant from 2 × 2 tables, and 60 studies reported inadequate data to construct 2 × 2 tables. This study explores the yield of contacting authors of diagnostic accuracy studies and impact on the systematic review findings. METHODS: Sixty-six corresponding authors were sent letters requesting additional information or clarification of data from 77 studies. Data received from the authors were synthesized with data included in the pr

The use of email as a component of adult stammering therapy: a preliminary report.

In West Glasgow email has evolved from a rapid means of arranging therapy appointments with adults who stammer into a medium for exchange of therapeutic messages with some clients. Since 2004, sixteen clients have used email to communicate as part of their therapy programme. The benefits include improving access to services, supporting speech change, facilitating lasting personal growth, improving clinical decision-making, equalizing the therapist-client relationship and enhancing caseload management. Although this experience suggests that email is appropriate for stammering therapy, the effec
