Electronic waste (E-waste) recycling is a rapidly growing occupation in the USA with the potential for elevated exposure to flame retardants and metals associated with electronic devices. We previously measured polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in plasma from E-waste workers and found them similar to non-E-waste workers. This study focused on structurally related PBDE derivatives, the hydroxylated (OH-PBDEs) and methoxylated (MeO-PBDEs) forms along with metals known to occur in E-waste. Humans can metabolize PBDEs and some MeO-PBDEs into OH-PBDEs, which is a concern due to greater health

Waste generated by the electrical and electronic devices is huge concern worldwide. With decreasing life cycle of most electronic devices and unavailability of the suitable recycling technologies it is expected to have huge electronic and electrical wastes to be generated in the coming years. The environmental threats caused by the disposal and incineration of electronic waste starting from the atmosphere to the aquatic and terrestrial living system have raised high alerts and concerns on the gases produced (dioxins, furans, polybrominated organic pollutants, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbo

Stocks of virgin-mined materials utilized in linear economic flows continue to present enormous challenges. E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams, and threatens to grow into a global problem of unmanageable proportions. An effective form of management of resource recycling and environmental improvement is available, in the form of extraction and purification of precious metals taken from waste streams, in a process known as urban mining. In this work, we demonstrate utilizing real cost data from e-waste processors in China that ingots of pure copper and gold could be recovered fr

The rapid rise in urbanization and consumption has intensified global solid waste generation, creating pressing public health challenges. Improper waste disposal contributes to infectious diseases via vector proliferation, water and soil contamination and direct exposure to hazardous materials. This review synthesizes evidence on health risks from municipal, healthcare and electronic waste while evaluating interventions within the integrated solid waste management framework. Data shows the link between poor waste management and increased incidence of vector-borne, waterborne, respiratory and c

Recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is widely regarded as a cornerstone of circular economy and climate mitigation strategies, reinforced by normalized expectations, institutional routines, and performance metrics. Yet beneath this consensus, recycling systems genuinely succeed on the metrics they are designed to meet while systematically failing to recover the critical raw materials they are institutionally designed to secure. This paper presents a systematic literature review of 55 peer-reviewed studies, extended by a temporal comparison of ten studies from 2023 to

In the context of recycling metal to embrace the sustainability challenge, this work proposes a geochemically-analogous process of metal recovery through mechanochemistry for the first time, to avoid the limitations of on-going methods and to establish an innovative technology philosophy. This work systematically investigates this geochemically-analogous process, to keep it green and to generalize it further. Copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), a typical copper-rich waste, is chosen as a case study in this work. Nearly 98% of the copper in the WPCBs can be recycled in th

In recent years, electronic waste (e-waste) production has increased due to the population's growth and high consumption. As a result of the high concentration of heavy elements in these wastes, their disposal has posed many environmental problems. On the other hand, due to the non-renewability of mineral resources and the presence of valuable elements such as Cu and Au in electronic waste, these wastes are considered secondary minerals for recovering valuable elements. Among electronic waste, recovery of metals from spent telecommunication printed circuit boards (STPCBs) is significant, which

Croatia's energy transition will generate substantial end-of-life waste streams from photovoltaic panels (PV), electric and hybrid vehicle batteries, and wind-turbine blades, with significant implications for waste-management capacity. This paper applies a cohort-based, stock-driven material flow model using scenario-specific deployment pathways derived from official policy targets. Photovoltaic waste is projected to reach 41,481-47,423 tonnes by 2053, while cumulative in-use stocks reach 202,500-432,750 tonnes. Electric and hybrid vehicle battery waste is projected to reach 34,426-72,099 tonn

The exponential growth of off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has significantly improved rural electrification but has also introduced new environmental management challenges related to end-of-life disposal. In Zambia, where over one million solar devices were sold between 2018 and 2022, the short lifespan of many solar kits, often under four years, has resulted in a growing and unregulated stream of solar electronic waste (e-waste). More than 90% of these products are technically repairable yet rarely serviced. This study examines the environmental impacts

In waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), brominated epoxy resin (BER) and copper are the two types of material that attracts the most attention due to their environmental risk and resource value. In this study, a novel and high-efficiency process for debromination and resource recovery of waste PCBs by low-temperature near-critical aqueous ammonia (NCAA) was successfully developed. A batch reactor was used in experiments with the temperatures ranging from 200 to 350 °C and the reaction times from 30 to 90 min. The ammonia water in near critical conditions can act not only as a medium but also a

The US electronics recycling industry has introduced a novel mobile electronic waste (e-waste) shredding truck service to address increasing needs for secure data destruction of e-waste. These trucks can shred small electronics with data security concerns at remote locations for a wide variety of clients. Shredding jobs usually involve hand-feeding electronic waste (e-waste) for 4-10 h day-1, 1-5 days. Shredding of e-waste has been documented as a source of high metal exposures, especially lead and cadmium. However, no studies have been done to assess exposures on mobile e-waste shredding truc

Carbon dioxide (CO2) utilization contributes to carbon mitigation and sustainable production, but its practical application is constrained by the high thermodynamic stability of CO2, sluggish activation kinetics, limited C-C coupling efficiency, as well as the high demand for electrons and reducing power. Coupling CO2 conversion with waste-derived resources provides an effective way to address these limitations. Strategically, biomass, organic solid waste, and wastewater can supply reduced carbon, hydrogen, nutrients, electron donors, sacrificial oxidation substrates, and microbial growth medi

Waste management aboard the International Space Station is a critical challenge due to limited space, microgravity, and continuous waste generation. This manuscript explores biotechnological strategies that convert waste into valuable resources, supporting sustainability and reducing reliance on Earth. Biowaste decomposition transforms organic waste into nutrients and biogas, while regenerative life support systems recycle carbon, water, and minerals. Biomining enables microbes to extract rare elements and upcycle electronic waste into mission-critical metals. Engineered extremophiles demonstr

Rapid electric vehicle uptake has elevated the importance of end-of-life (EoL) management of electric vehicle batteries (EVBs). Due to the high environmental burden of EVB production, the focus should shift from EVB production to EoL management over time. Existing life cycle assessment (LCA) studies on EoL management of EVBs typically treat repurposing and preparation for repurposing as a single generic unit process, limit repurposing to one second-life application, and adopt "ready-to-repurpose" assumptions that overlook inhomogeneity among EVB packs and the performance variability of lithium

Although the growing number of electronic wastes poses environmental challenges, they also contain precious metals, such as gold, that has significant economic value if recycled properly. Supercritical-CO2-based gold extraction from printed circuit boards (PCBs) has been experimentally demonstrated, but its economic promise is not fully understood. Results in this study show that the main cost drivers of this process are the chemicals, including the acid used and the supercritical CO2. The analyses reveal that such process could be profitable when gold content in PCBs is above 0.02% and the ex

Currently, more than 55% of global indium production is consumed for indium tin oxide (ITO) production because of its excellent display properties mainly driven by demand for flat panel displays (FPDs) or LCDs. At the end of life, the waste LCD flows to the e-waste stream, accounts for 12.5% of the global e-waste, and is forecasted to be increasing progressively. These waste LCDs are potential wealth for indium that poses a threat to the environment. The volume of waste LCD generation is a global as well as national concern from a waste management perspective. Techno-economical recycling of th

In the disposal of electronic waste, cathode ray tube (CRT) funnel glass is an environmental problem of old television sets. Removal of the lead from CRT funnel glass can prevent its release into the environment and allow its reuse. In this research, we reference the dry progress productive technology of sodium silicate, the waste CRT glass was dealt with sodium silicate frit melted and sodium silicate frit dissolved. Adding a certain amount of Na ₂CO₃to the waste CRT glass bases on the material composition and content of it, then the specific modulus of sodium silicate frit is obtained by mel

The disposal of waste-printed circuit boards (WPCBs) poses significant environmental and health risks, as they are a major component of e-waste containing hazardous materials. However, WPCBs also contain valuable metallic elements, making them important resources for recycling. To address the dual challenge of hazardous waste management and resource recovery, sustainable approaches for metal extraction from WPCBs are imperative. The present study, thus aimed to explore the use of glycine as an environment-friendly alternative to conventional inorganic acid-leaching agents for copper extraction

The rapid consumption and obsolescence of electronics have resulted in e-waste being one of the fastest growing waste streams worldwide. Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are among the most complex e-waste, containing significant quantities of hazardous and toxic materials leading to high levels of pollution if landfilled or processed inappropriately. However, PCBs are also an important resource of metals including copper, tin, lead and precious metals; their recycling is appealing especially as the concentration of these metals in PCBs is considerably higher than in their ores. A double waste stream problem arises from the increasing use of electrical and electronic equipment and their energy consumption: potentially toxic wastes from the equipment itself and potential acid mine drainage from the waste of the coal mines that provide the fuel to cover the energy demand. CEReS (Co-processing of Coal Mine & Electronic Wastes: Novel Resources for a Sustainable Future) is a novel method to co-process the coal mine and low-grade PCBs waste to reduce their environmental impacts while producing metals and other valuable products. The aim of this study is to investigate wheth
